But the High Pass filter is also great for sharpening images, and it's much easier to use, with none of the confusing options you'll find with those other two filters.<\/p>\n<p>In this tutorial, I'll explain what it means to <em>sharpen<\/em> an image in Photoshop, and why the High Pass filter is such a powerful sharpening tool. You'll learn how to find the best settings to use with your image, and I'll show you how to apply the High Pass filter non-destructively so you can sharpen your image without making any permanent changes. I'll be using Photoshop CC but everything you'll learn is fully compatible with Photoshop CS6. It works by increasing  contrast along the edges in your image. Photoshop considers an <em>edge<\/em> to be any area where there's a big, sudden change in brightness between neighboring pixels.<\/p>\n<p>Increasing  contrast along the edges makes the light side of the edge lighter and the dark side darker. Your brain then interprets the increased contrast as &quot;sharper&quot;. The more we boost edge contrast, the sharper the image appears.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"sub\">Why is the High Pass filter great for image sharpening?<\/h2>\n<p>So sharpening an image is all about increasing edge contrast. But what does that have to do with Photoshop's High Pass filter? Well, before we can increase contrast along the edges, we first need to <em>find<\/em> those edges. And High Pass is an <em>edge-detection <\/em>filter. It looks for edges in the image and highlights them. Areas that are not an edge are ignored.<\/p>\n<p>Once the edges are highlighted, we can then combine the High Pass results with one of Photoshop's contrast-boosting blend modes to easily increase edge contrast without affecting other parts of the image!<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"sub\">How to sharpen images in Photoshop with High Pass<\/h2>\n<p>So now that we know that sharpening an image means increasing contrast along the edges, and that Photoshop's High Pass filter detects those edges, let's learn how to sharpen an image with High Pass!<\/p>\n<p>To follow along, you can use any image in need of some sharpening. I'll use <a href=\"https:\/\/adobe.prf.hn\/click\/camref:1100lrdjJ\/destination:https%3A%2F%2Fstock.adobe.com%2Fca%2Fstock-photo%2Fbarred-owl-on-tree-branch%2F90570679\" title=\"View this image on Adobe Stock\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this photo from Adobe Stock<\/a>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/cc\/sharpen-high-pass\/new\/original.jpg\" alt=\"The original photo before sharpening in Photoshop with the High Pass filter\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The original image. Photo credit: Adobe Stock.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 1: Convert the Background layer into a smart object<\/h3>\n<p>Start by converting your image layer into a <em>smart object<\/em>. That way, the High Pass filter can be applied as a non-destructive <em>smart filter<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"\/basics\/layers\/layers-panel\/\">Layers panel<\/a>, the image sits on the <a href=\"\/basics\/layers\/background-layer\/\">Background layer<\/a>: <\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/cc\/sharpen-high-pass\/new\/layers-panel-photoshop.png\" alt=\"Photoshop's Layers panel showing the unsharpened image\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The Layers panel showing the unsharpened image.<\/div>\n<p>To convert the layer to a smart object, click the <strong>menu icon<\/strong> in the top right corner of the Layers panel:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/cc\/sharpen-high-pass\/new\/layers-panel-menu-icon.png\" alt=\"Clicking the Layers panel menu icon in Photoshop\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Clicking the Layers panel menu icon.<\/div>\n<p>And choose <strong>Convert to Smart Object<\/strong> from the menu:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/cc\/sharpen-high-pass\/new\/convert-to-smart-object.png\" alt=\"Choosing the Convert to Smart Object command in Photoshop\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Choosing \"Convert to Smart Object\".<\/div>\n<p>A <em>smart object icon<\/em> appears in the lower right of the preview thumbnail, telling us that the image is now safely inside a <a href=\"\/basics\/how-to-edit-and-replace-smart-object-contents-in-photoshop\/\" title=\"Learn more\">smart object<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Any sharpening we add with the High Pass filter will now be applied to the smart object itself, leaving the original image unharmed:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/cc\/sharpen-high-pass\/new\/smart-object-icon-photoshop.png\" alt=\"Photoshop's Layers panel showing the layer converted to a smart object\" width=\"275\" height=\"177\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The smart object icon.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 2: Select the High Pass filter<\/h3>\n<p>Next, select the High Pass filter by going up to the <strong>Filter<\/strong> menu in the Menu Bar, choosing <strong>Other<\/strong>, and then choosing <strong>High Pass<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/cc\/sharpen-high-pass\/new\/select-high-pass-filter-photoshop.png\" alt=\"Selecting the High Pass filter in Photoshop\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Going to Filter &gt; Other &gt; High Pass.<\/div>\n<p>As soon you select High Pass, your image will turn gray:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/cc\/sharpen-high-pass\/new\/high-pass-filter-gray-image.jpg\" alt=\"Selecting Photoshop's High Pass filter turned the image gray\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The initial result after selecting the High Pass filter.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 3: Adjust the Radius value to highlight the edges<\/h3>\n<p>The High Pass filter dialog box is very simple to use, with just a preview window and a Radius slider below it. Let's look at how the High Pass filter works: <\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/cc\/sharpen-high-pass\/new\/high-pass-filter-photoshop.jpg\" alt=\"Photoshop's High Pass filter dialog box\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Photoshop's High Pass filter.<\/div>\n<h4>How Photoshop's High Pass filter works<\/h4>\n<p>High Pass works by filling the entire image with flat, neutral gray. It then looks for edges in the image (areas with an abrupt change in brightness between neighboring pixels) and highlights them by making the light side of the edge lighter and the dark side darker. Non-edge areas remain flat gray. <\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Radius<\/strong> value affects the <em>width<\/em> of the edge highlighting by controlling the number of pixels extending outward from the edge that should be included and highlighted as part of the edge.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, a Radius value of 1 pixel would mean that the High Pass filter is highlighting only a single pixel along either side of an edge. But increasing the Radius value to 10 pixels would extend the highlighting outward to include 10 pixels on either side. <\/p>\n<h4>How to find the best Radius value for image sharpening<\/h4>\n<p>Since the goal of image sharpening is to increase contrast only along the edges, we want to keep the width of the highlighting to a minimum, which means that lower Radius values work best. <\/p>\n<p>And the easiest way to find the best Radius value for your image is to start by dragging the Radius slider all the way to the left, to a value of <strong>0.1 pixels<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/cc\/sharpen-high-pass\/new\/lowest-radius-value.png\" alt=\"Setting the lowest Radius value in Photoshop's High Pass filter\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Setting the radius to the lowest value.<\/div>\n<p>At the lowest setting, the entire image  is filled with solid gray and no edges are visible. <\/p>\n<p>This does <em>not<\/em> mean there are no edges in the image, or that the High Pass filter is not able to detect them. It just means that the Radius value is too low at the moment for the edges to be seen:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/cc\/sharpen-high-pass\/new\/image-high-pass-lowest-radius.png\" alt=\"The result with Photoshop's High Pass filter set to the lowest Radius value\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">At the lowest Radius setting, no edges are visible.<\/div>\n<p>To bring the edges into view, slowly increase the Radius value by dragging the slider to the right. I'll increase mine to 5 pixels:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/cc\/sharpen-high-pass\/new\/increase-radius-high-pass.jpg\" alt=\"Increasing the Radius value in Photoshop's High Pass filter\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Increasing the Radius value.<\/div>\n<p>And notice that we now see thin but obvious highlighting around the edges. <\/p>\n<p>Here, the highlights appear around the owl's face and feathers, and in the tree branch. But other areas of the image that are not part of an edge remain solid gray:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/cc\/sharpen-high-pass\/new\/image-highpass-radius-5pixels.jpg\" alt=\"Increasing the High Pass filter's Radius value to reveal edges in the image\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Increasing the Radius value reveals edge detail.<\/div>\n<h4>Setting the Radius value too high<\/h4>\n<p>Be careful not to push the Radius value too far, or else too much of the image will be highlighted. <\/p>\n<p>For example, I'll increase the Radius value to something extreme, like 40 pixels:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/cc\/sharpen-high-pass\/new\/photoshop-highpass-filter-radius-40pixels.jpg\" alt=\"Setting the Radius value too high for good sharpening\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Setting the Radius value too high.<\/div>\n<p>This tells Photoshop to extend the width of the edges out to 40 pixels on either side. And now almost every part of the image is considered an edge. Even the blurred objects in the background, which we would normally not want to sharpen, are now highlighted as edges:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/cc\/sharpen-high-pass\/image-highpass-radius-40pixels.jpg\" alt=\"The image with the High Pass radius value too high\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">An example of what happens when we increase the Radius value too much.<\/div>\n<h4>The Radius value sweet spot<\/h4>\n<p>For the best sharpening results, choose a Radius value that's large enough to highlight the edges while still keeping those highlights as close to the edges as possible.<\/p>\n<p>The exact Radius value you need will depend both on the size of your image and on the amount of detail. In general, values of between 2 and 5 pixels work best. <\/p>\n<p>For my image, I'll lower the Radius down to 3 pixels:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/cc\/sharpen-high-pass\/new\/radius-3-pixels.jpg\" alt=\"Setting the High Pass filter Radius value to 3 pixels\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Setting the Radius to 3 pixels.<\/div>\n<p>And at this lower setting, the edge highlighting is much more subtle yet still visible. This is the result we're looking for:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/cc\/sharpen-high-pass\/new\/result-radius-3pixels-high-pass.jpg\" alt=\"The result with a Radius of 3 pixels in Photoshop's High Pass filter\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The effect using a Radius of just 3 pixels.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 4: Close the High Pass filter<\/h3>\n<p>When you're done, click OK to close the High Pass filter's dialog box:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/cc\/sharpen-high-pass\/new\/close-high-pass-filter.png\" alt=\"Closing the High Pass filter dialog box in Photoshop\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Closing the dialog box.<\/div>\n<p>And in the Layers panel, we see High Pass listed as a <a href=\"\/basics\/how-to-use-smart-filters-in-photoshop\/\" title=\"Learn more\">smart filter<\/a> below the image:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/cc\/sharpen-high-pass\/new\/high-pass-smart-filter-photoshop.png\" alt=\"Photoshop's Layers panel showing the High Pass smart filter\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The Layers panel showing the High Pass smart filter.<\/div>\n<aside><p class=\"members-ad-top\"><a href=\"\/print-ready-pdfs\/\">Download all of our Photoshop tutorials as PDFs!<\/a><\/p><\/aside>\n<h3>Step 5: Sharpen the image by changing the filter's blend mode<\/h3>\n<p>With the edges highlighted, we can now sharpen the image just by changing the High Pass filter's <a href=\"\/photo-editing\/layer-blend-modes\/intro\/\" title=\"Learn more\">blend mode<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Double-click on the <strong>Blending Options <\/strong>icon to the right of the filter's name:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/cc\/sharpen-high-pass\/new\/smart-filter-blending-options-icon.png\" alt=\"Opening the Blending Options for the High Pass filter in the Layers panel\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Opening the smart filter\u2019s Blending Options.<\/div>\n<p>And then in the Blending Options dialog box, change the <strong>Mode<\/strong> (short for Blend Mode) to one of Photoshop's contrast-boosting blend modes. <\/p>\n<p>The blend modes you'll want to try are <strong>Overlay<\/strong>, <strong>Soft Light<\/strong>, <strong>Hard Light<\/strong>, and <strong>Linear Light<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/cc\/sharpen-high-pass\/new\/blend-modes-high-pass-photoshop.png\" alt=\"Sharpening the image by changing the High Pass filter's blend mode in Photoshop\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Changing the High Pass filter's blend mode.<\/div>\n<h4>How the blend modes affect image sharpness<\/h4>\n<p>All of Photoshop's contrast blend modes hide areas of neutral gray, which means that the flat gray, non-edge areas from the High Pass filter disappear. And since they've disappeared, they have no effect at all on our image sharpening.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the highlights from the filter are used to increase contrast along the edges by making the light side of the edges lighter and the dark sides darker.<\/p>\n<h4>Sharpening with the Overlay and Soft Light blend modes<\/h4>\n<p>The two most commonly-used blend modes for sharpening images with High Pass are <strong>Overlay<\/strong> and <strong>Soft Light<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/photo-editing\/layer-blend-modes\/overlay\/\" title=\"Learn more\">Overlay<\/a> produces a higher contrast effect, resulting in a stronger amount of sharpening, while Soft Light gives you lower contrast and more subtle sharpening.<\/p>\n<p>On the left is the result using Overlay, and on the right is the sharpening with Soft Light. Keep in mind that the differences in sharpness are not as noticeable in these smaller screenshots as they will be with your own, larger image:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/cc\/sharpen-high-pass\/new\/sharpening-comparison-overlay-softlight.jpg\" alt=\"A comparison of the image sharpening results using High Pass with the Overlay and Soft Light blend modes in Photoshop\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The sharpening result using Overlay (left) and Soft Light (right).<\/div>\n<h4>Sharpening with the Hard Light and Linear Light blend modes<\/h4>\n<p>If Overlay still produces less sharpening than you need, try the <strong>Hard Light<\/strong> or <strong>Linear Light<\/strong> blend modes.
