Normally, Photoshop doesn't allow us to use Distort or Perspective with Type layers. But here, I'll show you a simple trick to unlock both commands and keep your text fully editable.<\/p>\n<p>I'm using <a href=\"https:\/\/adobe.prf.hn\/click\/camref:1100lrdjJ\/destination:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.adobe.com%2Fproducts%2Fphotoshop.html\" title=\"Get Photoshop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Photoshop CC<\/a> but any recent version will work. Here's an image I've opened in Photoshop to use as a background for my effect (<a href=\"https:\/\/adobe.prf.hn\/click\/camref:1100lrdjJ\/destination:https%3A%2F%2Fstock.adobe.com%2Fca%2Fimages%2Fplanet-earth-with-sunrise-in-space%2F30725101\" title=\"View on Adobe Stock\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">planet photo<\/a> from Adobe Stock):<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/cc\/distort-perspective\/background-image.jpg\" alt=\"The image that the text will be placed in front of. Photo credit: Adobe Stock.<\/div>\n<p>And if we look in the <a href=\"\/basics\/layers\/layers-panel\/\" title=\"View tutorial\">Layers panel<\/a>, we see that I've also gone ahead and added some text above the image. I'll turn it on by clicking the Type layer's <strong>visibility icon<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/cc\/distort-perspective\/layers-panel-type-layer.png\" alt=\"Turning on the Type layer in the document in Photoshop\" width=\"290\" height=\"188\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Turning on the text.<\/div>\n<p>And here's my text:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/cc\/distort-perspective\/text-above-image.jpg\" alt=\"Text has been added in front of the image in Photoshop\" width=\"704\" height=\"443\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The text appears in front of the image.<\/div>\n<p>I'm using a font called Orbitron Bold that I downloaded from Adobe Typekit:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/cc\/distort-perspective\/font-type.png\" alt=\"The Orbitron Bold font used in the effect.\" width=\"508\" height=\"98\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The font used in the effect.<\/div>\n<h3>The Distort and Perspective commands<\/h3>\n<p>What I would like to do is give my text more of a 3D look, as if it's tilting back towards the horizon, which means I want to change its <em>perspective<\/em>. And the easiest way to add perspective is by using Photoshop's <strong>Perspective<\/strong> command.<\/p>\n<p>To get to it, I'll go up to the <strong>Edit<\/strong> menu in the Menu Bar and I'll choose <strong>Transform<\/strong>. This is where we find all of Photoshop's various transformation commands. But notice that, while we can access things like Scale, Rotate, Skew, and even Warp, the two most interesting options&mdash;<strong>Distort<\/strong> and <strong>Perspective<\/strong>&mdash;are grayed out:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/cc\/distort-perspective\/photoshop-transform-options.png\" alt=\"Photoshop's Distort and Perspective transform options are unavailable.\" width=\"556\" height=\"186\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The Distort and Perspective options are unavailable.<\/div>\n<h3>Converting the Type layer<\/h3>\n<p>The reason is that Photoshop won't allow us to use Distort or Perspective with a Type layer. So, before I can add a 3D perspective to my text, I first need to convert my Type layer to something else.<\/p>\n<h4>Option 1: Rasterizing the text<\/h4>\n<p>One thing I could do is <em>rasterize<\/em> my text, which means converting my type into pixels. And I could do that in the Layers panel by <strong>right-clicking<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Control-clicking<\/strong> (Mac) directly on the <strong>Type layer<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/cc\/distort-perspective\/type-layer-photoshop.png\" alt=\"Right-clicking (Win) \/ Control-clicking (Mac) on the Type layer in Photoshop\" width=\"275\" height=\"188\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Right-click (Win) \/ Control-click (Mac) on the Type layer.<\/div>\n<p>And then choosing <strong>Rasterize Type<\/strong> from the menu:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/cc\/distort-perspective\/rasterize-type.png\" alt=\"The Rasterize Type command in Photoshop\" width=\"267\" height=\"111\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The Rasterize Type command.<\/div>\n<p>But here's the problem. If I convert my type into pixels, I lose the ability to edit my text. And, when we apply any sort of transformations to a pixel-based image, we can lose quality. So, rasterizing the type isn't a good choice.<\/p>\n<h4>Option 2: Converting the type to a shape<\/h4>\n<p>Another option found under the same menu is <strong>Convert to Shape<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/cc\/distort-perspective\/convert-to-shape.png\" alt=\"The Convert to Shape command in Photoshop\" width=\"267\" height=\"105\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The Convert to Shape command.<\/div>\n<p>The benefit that a <a href=\"\/basics\/vector-shapes-vs-pixel-shapes-in-photoshop\/\" title=\"View tutorial\">shape has over pixels<\/a> is that we can transform a shape as much as we want without any loss in quality. But we'd still have a problem because we'd still lose the ability to edit our text. So, converting it to a shape also isn't the best choice.<\/p>\n<h4>Option 3: Converting the type into a smart object<\/h4>\n<p>But a third option is to convert our text into a <em>smart object<\/em> by choosing <strong>Convert to Smart Object<\/strong> from the menu:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/cc\/distort-perspective\/convert-to-smart-object.png\" alt=\"Converting the Type layer into a Smart Object in Photoshop\" width=\"267\" height=\"108\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Choosing Convert to Smart Object.<\/div>\n<p>Photoshop converts the Type layer into a <a href=\"\/basics\/how-to-create-smart-objects-in-photoshop\/\" title=\"View tutorial\">smart object<\/a>, and we know that by the <strong>smart object icon<\/strong> in the lower right of the thumbnail:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/cc\/distort-perspective\/smart-object-photoshop.png\" alt=\"The Type layer has been converted to a smart object in Photoshop\" width=\"275\" height=\"174\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The Type layer is now a smart object.<\/div>\n<p>Smart objects are non-destructive, so we can transform them as much as we want without any loss in quality. And our Type layer is now embedded <em>inside<\/em> the smart object, which means that we can open the smart object and edit our text whenever we need. But before we learn how to do that, let's look at how to use the Distort and Perspective commands with our smart object.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/basics\/scale-resize-images-smart-objects-photoshop\/\"  title=\"View tutorial\">Related: How to resize images without losing quality<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Distort<\/h3>\n<p>I'll go back up to the <strong>Edit<\/strong> menu and I'll again choose <strong>Transform<\/strong>. And this time, all of the transform options, including Distort and Perspective, are available:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/cc\/distort-perspective\/distort-perspectivs-available.png\" alt=\"Both the Distort and Perspective commands are available\" width=\"584\" height=\"185\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Both Distort and Perspective are available after converting the text to a smart object.<\/div>\n<p>I'll start by choosing <strong>Distort<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/cc\/distort-perspective\/distort.png\" alt=\"Choosing the Distort command in Photoshop\" width=\"273\" height=\"135\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Choosing the Distort command.<\/div>\n<p>The Distort command lets us click and drag any of the <strong>corner handles<\/strong> around the text independently of each other. We can drag them in any direction to distort the text into different shapes:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/cc\/distort-perspective\/distort-text-photoshop.jpg\" alt=\"Distorting the text in Photoshop using the Distort transform command\" width=\"704\" height=\"443\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">In Distort mode, drag the corner handles independently.<\/div>\n<h4>Canceling a transformation<\/h4>\n<p>That's not really what I want to do though, so I'll cancel the Distort command without making any changes by pressing the <strong>Esc<\/strong> key on my keyboard. And now I'm back to the original shape of the text:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/cc\/distort-perspective\/text-above-image.jpg\" alt=\"The Distort transform command has been canceled.\" width=\"704\" height=\"443\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Press Esc to cancel a transformation.<\/div>\n<h3>Perspective<\/h3>\n<p>What I <em>want<\/em> to do is make the text look like it's tilting back towards the horizon, sort of like the scrolling text you see at the beginning of a Star Wars movie. I <em>could<\/em> do that with the Distort command, but the Perspective command will make it easier.<\/p>\n<p>To select it, I'll go back up to the <strong>Edit<\/strong> menu, I'll choose <strong>Transform<\/strong>, and then I'll choose <strong>Perspective<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/cc\/distort-perspective\/choose-perspective-photoshop.png\" alt=\"Choosing the Perspective transform command in Photoshop\" width=\"273\" height=\"131\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Going to Edit &gt; Transform &gt; Perspective.<\/div>\n<h4>Distort vs Perspective<\/h4>\n<p>The difference between Distort and Perspective is that in Distort mode, we can drag the corner handles in any direction, and we can drag them separately from each other. In Perspective mode, we still drag the corner handles, but we can only drag them up and down, or left and right, and the handle in the opposite corner will move along with it in the opposite direction.<\/p>\n<p>Notice that if I drag the handle in the top left corner upward, the handle in the <em>bottom<\/em> left corner moves down:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/cc\/distort-perspective\/perspective-transform-top-left-corner-up.jpg\" alt=\"Dragging a corner handle up in Perspective mode moves the opposite handle down\" width=\"704\" height=\"443\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Dragging a handle up moves the opposite handle down.<\/div>\n<p>I'll undo that by going up to the <strong>Edit<\/strong> menu and choosing <strong>Undo<\/strong>, or by pressing <strong>Ctrl+Z<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Command+Z<\/strong> (Mac). This will undo the last step but will still keep me in Perspective mode:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/cc\/distort-perspective\/edit-undo.png\" alt=\"Undoing the last step in Perspective mode in Photoshop\" width=\"283\" height=\"99\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Going to Edit &gt; Undo.<\/div>\n<p>To make the text look like it's tilting backwards, I'll click on the same handle in the top left, but this time, Ill drag it inward towards the right. And because we're in Perspective mode, the opposite handle in the top right moves inward as well:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/cc\/distort-perspective\/perspective-transform-type-photoshop.jpg\" alt=\"Tilting the text into a 3D perspective with Photoshop\" width=\"704\" height=\"444\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Dragging a handle to the right moves the opposite handle to the left.<\/div>\n<h3>Switching between Transform commands<\/h3>\n<p>I also want to stretch the text vertically so it takes up more space along the bottom. To do that, I need to switch from the Perspective command to the Scale command. You can quickly switch between Transform commands by <strong>right-clicking<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Control-clicking<\/strong> (Mac) anywhere inside the document and choosing a different option from the list. I'll change mine from \"SPACE\" to \"ALIEN\".
