But in other types of photos, it may just make him look like he could use a rest, or maybe he's been resting a little too much, in which case you'll want to remove it, or at least reduce it. Right now all I have in my Layers palette is my Background layer:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/stubble\/background-layer.jpg\" alt=\"Photoshop's Layers palette\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Photoshop's Layers palette showing the Background layer.<\/div>\n<p>I'm going to quickly duplicate the Background layer using the keyboard shortcut <strong>Ctrl+J<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Command+J<\/strong> (Mac), and now I have two layers - the original Background layer on the bottom and the copy above it:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/stubble\/background-copy.jpg\" alt=\"Photoshop's Layers palette now showing the copy of the Background layer as well.\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Press \"Ctrl+J\" (Win) \/ \"Command+J\" (Mac) to duplicate the Background layer.<\/div>\n<h4><span>Step 2:<\/span> Use The \"Dust &amp; Scratches\" Filter To Blur Away The Stubble<\/h4>\n<p>Go up to the <strong>Filter menu<\/strong> at the top of the screen, select <strong>Noise<\/strong>, and then select <strong>Dust &amp; Scratches<\/strong>, which brings up the Dust &amp; Scratches dialog box. We're going to use it to blur away the stubble.<\/p>\n<p>To do that, increase the <strong>Radius<\/strong> value until the stubble is no more. Here, I've used a Radius value of 4 pixels:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/stubble\/dust-scratches.jpg\" alt=\"Photoshop's Dust &amp; Scratches filter dialog box\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Increase the Radius value in the Dust &amp; Scratches dialog box until there's nothing left of the stubble.<\/div>\n<p>You're going to end up blurring out the entire photo at this point, but that's okay. Ignore the rest of the photo and focus only on the stubble areas. Once you've smoothed those areas out, click OK.<\/p>\n<p>Here's my image after applying the Dust &amp; Scratches filter:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/stubble\/image-ds.jpg\" alt=\"The image in Photoshop after applying the Dust &amp; Scratches filter.\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The image in Photoshop after applying the Dust &amp; Scratches filter.<\/div>\n<h4><span>Step 3:<\/span> Create A Pattern From The Image<\/h4>\n<p>We're going to create a pattern out of the blurred image. We'll be using the pattern with the Healing Brush in a moment, but for now, go up to the <strong>Edit menu<\/strong> at the top of the screen and choose <strong>Define Pattern<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This will bring up the <strong>Pattern Name<\/strong> dialog box. Go ahead and name it whatever you like. I've named mine \"stubble\":<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/stubble\/pattern-name.jpg\" alt=\"Photoshop's Pattern Name dialog box\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Choose Edit > Define Pattern, then name your pattern.<\/div>\n<p>Click OK once you've entered a name, and the pattern is created.<\/p>\n<h4><span>Step 4:<\/span> Undo The \"Dust &amp; Scratches\" Filter<\/h4>\n<p>We need to revert the image back to the way it was before we applied the Dust &amp; Scratches filter at this point, so to do that, use the keyboard shortcut <strong>Ctrl+Z<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Command+Z<\/strong> (Mac) to undo the filter.<\/p>\n<h4><span>Step 5:<\/span> Select The Healing Brush And Set It To Use The Pattern<\/h4>\n<p>Grab you're <strong>Healing Brush<\/strong> from the Tools palette. Then, up in the <strong>Options Bar<\/strong> at the top of the screen, set the <strong>Source<\/strong> for the Healing Brush to <strong>Pattern<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/stubble\/options-bar.gif\" alt=\"Photoshop's Options Bar\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">With the Healing Brush selected, set its Source to \"Pattern\" in the Options Bar.<\/div>\n<p>Click on the <strong>Pattern preview thumbnail<\/strong> to the right of the word \"Pattern&quot;, and then click on the pattern you created to select it. It will be the last pattern in the list:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/stubble\/select-pattern.jpg\" alt=\"Select the pattern you created.\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Click the pattern preview area, then click on the pattern you created to select it.<\/div>\n<p>Finally, make sure the <strong>Aligned<\/strong> and <strong>Sample All Layers<\/strong> options are selected:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/stubble\/aligned.jpg\" alt=\"The Aligned and Sample All Layers options in the Options Bar.\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Make sure \"Aligned\" and \"Sample All Layers\" are checked in the Options Bar.<\/div>\n<h4><span>Step 6:<\/span> Add A New Blank Layer<\/h4>\n<p>Add a new blank layer using the keyboard shortcut <strong>Ctrl+Shift+N <\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Command+Shift+N<\/strong> (Mac). This will bring up Photoshop's <strong>New Layer<\/strong> dialog box. Name the new layer \"healing\" and click OK:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/stubble\/new-layer-db.jpg\" alt=\"Photoshop's New Layer dialog box\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Photoshop's \"New Layer\" dialog box. Name the new layer \"healing\".<\/div>\n<p>You should now have a new blank layer named \"healing\" at the top of the Layers palette:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/stubble\/healing-layer.jpg\" alt=\"Photoshop's Layers palette showing the new healing layer\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The new blank \"healing\" layer at the top of the Layers palette.<\/div>\n<h4><span>Step 7:<\/span> Lower The Opacity Of The \"Healing\" Layer To 50%<\/h4>\n<p>Before we start applying the Healing Brush to the image, we need to lower the opacity of the \"healing\" layer, otherwise the healing will be too intense. To do that, with the \"healing\" layer selected, go up to the <strong>Opacity<\/strong> option in the top right of the Layers palette and enter in a value of <strong>50%<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/stubble\/lower-opacity.jpg\" alt=\"Lowering the opacity of the healing layer in the Layers palette\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Lower the opacity of the \"healing\" layer to 50%.<\/div>\n<h4><span>Step 8:<\/span> Paint Over The Stubble With The Healing Brush<\/h4>\n<p>Begin painting over the stubble areas with the Healing Brush. If you need to change the size of the brush, use the <strong>left and right bracket keys<\/strong> to increase or decrease the brush size as you paint. Continue painting with the Healing Brush until you've covered up all the stubble areas. Use short brush strokes and make sure to release the mouse button after each one to give Photoshop a chance to  apply the healing.<\/p>\n<p>Here's my image after covering up all the stubble areas with the Healing Brush:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/stubble\/image-healing.jpg\" alt=\"The image after covering up the stubble with the Healing Brush\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The image after covering up the stubble with the Healing Brush.<\/div>\n<h4><span>Step 9:<\/span> Adjust The Opacity Of The \"Healing\" Layer If Needed<\/h4>\n<p>The man in the photo I'm using has quite a bit of stubble and it's still showing a bit too much, so I'm going to reduce it further by increasing the opacity of the \"healing\" layer to about 65%. You won't necessarily need to change your opacity, but increase or decrease it if needed:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/stubble\/opacity-65.jpg\" alt=\"Increasing the opacity of the healing layer to 65%\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Increasing the opacity of the \"healing\" layer to 65%.<\/div>\n<p>Here's the image after increasing the opacity value. The stubble is a bit less noticeable now:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/stubble\/image-65.jpg\" alt=\"The image after increasing the opacity of the healing layer\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The stubble is less noticeable now after increasing the opacity of the \"healing layer\".<\/div>\n<p>The problem is, the bottom area of his face is looking a little blurry. I'm going to fix that next.<\/p>\n<h4><span>Step 10:<\/span> Use The \"Blend If\" Sliders So The \"Healing\" Layer Only Affects The Dark Stubble<\/h4>\n<p>Right now, my &quot;healing&quot; layer is affecting not only the man's stubble, it's also affecting a lot of his skin, causing things to look a bit blurry. What I really want is for the healing layer to affect <em>only<\/em> the stubble and leave his skin alone. How can I do that? Well, his stubble is very dark, while his skin is much lighter, which means I should be able to use Photoshop's <strong>Blend If<\/strong> sliders to limit the \"healing\" layer to only the darkest parts of his face, which is the stubble. Let's try it.<\/p>\n<p>With the \"healing\" layer selected, I'm going click on the <strong>Layer Styles<\/strong> icon at the bottom of the Layers palette:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/stubble\/layer-styles-icon.jpg\" alt=\"Clicking the Layer Styles icon at the bottom of Photoshop's Layers palette\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Click the \"Layer Styles\" icon at the bottom of the Layers palette.<\/div>\n<p>Then I'll choose <strong>Blending Options<\/strong> from the top of the list:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/stubble\/choose-blending-options.jpg\" alt=\"Choose Blending Options from the list of Layer Styles\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Choose \"Blending Options\" from the top of the Layer Styles list.<\/div>\n<p>This will bring up the <strong>Layer Style<\/strong> dialog box, set to the Blending Options. The <strong>Blend If<\/strong> sliders are found at the very bottom of the center column, directly below the \"Advanced Blending\" options:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/stubble\/layer-style-db.jpg\" alt=\"Photoshop's Layer Style dialog box with the Blend If sliders at the bottom\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The \"Blend If\" sliders are at the very bottom of the Layer Style dialog box.<\/div>\n<p>Drag the bottom white slider towards the left. As you drag further and further, you'll see the original skin texture begin to re-appear in the image. Continue dragging towards the left until the point where the stubble itself begins to show:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/stubble\/bottom-right-slider.jpg\" alt=\"Dragging the bottom white point Blend If slider towards the left\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Drag the bottom white point slider towards the left to reveal the original skin texture. Stop when the stubble begins to appear.<\/div>\n<p>Now we need to soften the transition area between where the original skin texture is showing and where the \"healing\" layer begins. To do that, hold down <strong>Alt<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Option<\/strong> (Mac) and begin dragging the white slider back towards the right. As soon as you start dragging, the slider will split in two and you'll be dragging just the right half. Continue dragging to the right a little to create a nice smooth transition area. When you see too much of the original skin texture beginning to look blurry again, you've gone too far:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/stubble\/split-slider.jpg\" alt=\"Split the slider in half and drag back towards the right to create a transition area.\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Hold down \"Alt\" (Win) \/ \"Option\" (Mac) and drag the slider back towards the right, splitting it in half and creating a smooth transition.<\/div>\n<p>When you're happy with how the image looks, click OK to exit out of the Layer Style dialog box, and you're done!
