I'll be using <strong>Photoshop CS6<\/strong> here but this tutorial is also fully compatible with <strong>Photoshop CC<\/strong>. Let's see how it works!<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>Here's the image I'll be using for this tutorial which was downloaded from <a href=\"https:\/\/prf.hn\/l\/gAzVE24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adobe Stock<\/a>. I'm going to use a path to add some text around the golf ball: <\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/basics\/cs6\/type-on-a-path\/original.jpg\" alt=\"A golf ball in flight. Image #24403595 licensed from Adobe Stock by Photoshop Essentials.com\" width=\"552\" height=\"500\" \/>\n<div class=\"caption\">The original image.<\/div>\n<p>Let's get started! <\/p>\n<\/section>\n<aside><p class=\"members-ad-top\"><a href=\"\/print-ready-pdfs\/\">Download all of our Photoshop tutorials as PDFs!<\/a><\/p><\/aside>\n<section>\n<h2 class=\"sub\">How To Add Type On A Path In Photoshop<\/h2>\n<h3>Step 1: Select The Ellipse Tool<\/h3>\n<p>As I mentioned, the steps for adding type along a path  are the same no matter which tool you used to create the path. So for this tutorial, we'll keep things simple. To draw a path around the golf ball, I'll use the <strong>Ellipse Tool<\/strong>, one of Photoshop's basic shape tools. You can learn more about drawing shapes in our <a href=\"\/basics\/how-to-draw-vector-shapes-in-photoshop-cs6\/\">How To Draw Vector Shapes in Photoshop<\/a> tutorial.<\/p>\n<p>By default, the Ellipse Tool is nested behind the <strong>Rectangle Tool<\/strong> in the Tools panel. To select it, I'll <strong>right-click<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Control-click<\/strong> (Mac) on the Rectangle Tool, then I'll choose the Ellipse Tool from the fly-out menu: <\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/basics\/cs6\/type-on-a-path\/photoshop-ellipse-tool.png\" alt=\"Selecting the Ellipse Tool in Photoshop.\" width=\"269\" height=\"172\" \/>\n<div class=\"caption\">Selecting the Ellipse Tool in the Tools panel.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 2: Change The Tool Mode To &quot;Path&quot;<\/h3>\n<p>With the Ellipse Tool selected, the <strong>Options Bar<\/strong> along the top of the screen changes to show us various options for working with the tool. Near the far left of the Options Bar is the <strong>Tool Mode<\/strong> option. By default, it's set to <strong>Shape<\/strong>. Photoshop actually gives us three different types of shapes that we can draw&mdash;<em>vector<\/em> shapes, <em>paths<\/em>, and <em>pixel-based<\/em> shapes. We want to draw a path, so I'll change the Tool Mode option from Shape to <strong>Path<\/strong>: <\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/basics\/cs6\/type-on-a-path\/ellipse-tool-mode-option.png\" alt=\"The Paths option in the Options Bar in Photoshop.\" width=\"404\" height=\"100\" \/>\n<div class=\"caption\">Changing the mode for the Ellipse Tool to Path.<\/div>\n<p><strong>Learn more:<\/strong> <a href=\"\/basics\/drawing-vector-vs-pixel-shapes-in-photoshop-cs6\/\">Drawing Vector Shapes vs Pixel Shapes in Photoshop<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Step 3: Draw Your Path<\/h3>\n<p>To draw the path, I'll click and hold my mouse button down in the center of the golf ball. Then, I'll press and hold <strong>Shift+Alt<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Shift+Option<\/strong> (Mac) on my keyboard and begin dragging outward from the center. Holding the Shift key down as I drag with the Ellipse Tool forces the shape of the path into a perfect circle, while the Alt (Win) \/ Option (Mac) key lets me draw the path outward from the spot where I clicked.<\/p>\n<p>I'll continue dragging outward from the center until the path is large enough to surround the ball. If you need to reposition a path as you're drawing it, press and hold the <strong>spacebar<\/strong> on your keyboard, drag with your mouse to move the path into position,   and then release your spacebar and continue drawing.<\/p>\n<p>When I'm happy with how the path looks, I'll release my Shift key and the Alt (Win) \/ Option (Mac) key,  then I'll release my mouse button (it's important to release the keys first, <em>then<\/em> the mouse button, or you'll get unexpected results). Select the <strong>Type Tool<\/strong> from the Tools panel: <\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/basics\/cs6\/type-on-a-path\/photoshop-type-tool.png\" alt=\"Photoshop Type Tool.\" width=\"78\" height=\"174\" \/>\n<div class=\"caption\">Selecting the Type Tool.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 5: Choose Your Font<\/h3>\n<p>Choose your font settings from the Options Bar. For my image, I'll use <strong>Futura Condensed Medium<\/strong> set to <strong>30 pt<\/strong>, but you can use whatever works best for you: <\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/basics\/cs6\/type-on-a-path\/photoshop-font-options.png\" alt=\"Photoshop font options in the Options Bar.\" width=\"622\" height=\"97\" \/>\n<div class=\"caption\">Setting the font options in the Options Bar.<\/div>\n<p>I also have my <strong>Text Alignment<\/strong> option set to <strong>Left<\/strong> and my type <strong>color<\/strong> set to <strong>white<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/basics\/cs6\/type-on-a-path\/text-alignment-color.png\" alt=\"The Text Alignment and Color options.\" width=\"399\" height=\"95\" \/>\n<div class=\"caption\">The Text Alignment and Color options.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 6: Move The Cursor Over The Path<\/h3>\n<p>Move the Type Tool directly over the path. The cursor  will change to an <strong>I-beam with a dotted wavy line<\/strong> through it. This tells us we're about to add text directly to the path itself: <\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/basics\/cs6\/type-on-a-path\/type-tool-path-cursor.jpg\" alt=\"Photoshop Type Tool cursor showing a dotted wavy line through it.\" width=\"645\" height=\"393\" \/>\n<div class=\"caption\">The dotted wavy line tells us we're adding text to the path.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 7: Click On The Path And Add Your Type<\/h3>\n<p>Click anywhere along the path and begin adding your text. The spot you click on is where the text will begin, and as you continue typing, the text follows the direction of the path. Don't worry if you've clicked on the wrong spot. As we'll see in a moment, we can easily move the text around on the path when we're done: <\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/basics\/cs6\/type-on-a-path\/adding-text-on-path.jpg\" alt=\"Adding text along a path in Photoshop.\" width=\"554\" height=\"535\" \/>\n<div class=\"caption\">The text is flowing along the shape of the circle.<\/div>\n<p>When you're done adding your text, click  the <strong>checkmark<\/strong> in the Options Bar to accept it: <\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/basics\/cs6\/type-on-a-path\/type-tool-checkmark.png\" alt=\"Clicking the checkmark to accept the text in Photoshop.\" width=\"464\" height=\"96\" \/>\n<div class=\"caption\">Clicking the checkmark.<\/div>\n<p>The text is now added to the path, although in my case it's on a bit of a weird angle, but we'll fix that next. If your path  disappeared on you when you clicked the checkmark and all you're seeing now is the text itself, don't worry. The path will re-appear when we move on to the next step: <\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/basics\/cs6\/type-on-a-path\/type-on-path.jpg\" alt=\"The text has been added to the path.\" width=\"552\" height=\"553\" \/>\n<div class=\"caption\">The text is following the path but needs to be repositioned.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 8: Select The Path Selection Tool<\/h3>\n<p>To reposition your text along the path, choose the <strong>Path Selection Tool<\/strong> from the Tools panel: <\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/basics\/cs6\/type-on-a-path\/photoshop-path-selection-tool.png\" alt=\"The Path Selection Tool in Photoshop.\" width=\"78\" height=\"169\" \/>\n<div class=\"caption\">Switching to the Path Selection Tool.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 9: Reposition The Text<\/h3>\n<p>Move the Path Selection Tool's cursor anywhere over top of your text. You'll see the cursor change from a black arrow into an <strong>I-beam with a small arrow<\/strong> on the side of it pointing left or right. Simply click on your text and drag it back and forth along the path with your mouse. Here, I'm dragging my text clockwise around the circle: <\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/basics\/cs6\/type-on-a-path\/move-text-along-path.jpg\" alt=\"Dragging text along the path in Photoshop.\" width=\"554\" height=\"553\" \/>\n<div class=\"caption\">Move the Path Selection Tool over your text, then click and drag it along the path.<\/div>\n<p>Watch what happens, though, if I drag my text too far. Some of it gets cut off at the end: <\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/basics\/cs6\/type-on-a-path\/type-cut-off.jpg\" alt=\"The end of the text is cut off.\" width=\"552\" height=\"551\" \/>\n<div class=\"caption\">Dragging the text too far resulted in the end being cut off.<\/div>\n<p>The end was cut off because I moved the text beyond the visible text area on the path. To fix the problem, look for a small <strong>circle<\/strong> on the path at the spot where the text is being cut off. The circle marks the end of the visible area: <\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/basics\/cs6\/type-on-a-path\/circle.jpg\" alt=\"The circle that marks the end of the visible text area.\" width=\"640\" height=\"322\" \/>\n<div class=\"caption\">Look for a small circle where the text gets cut off.<\/div>\n<p>Simply click on the circle with the Path Selection Tool and drag it further down the path until the rest of your text re-appears: <\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/basics\/cs6\/type-on-a-path\/reveal-end-of-text.jpg\" alt=\"Dragging the circle that marks the end of the visible text area along the path.\" width=\"644\" height=\"300\" \/>\n<div class=\"caption\">Dragging the circle clockwise along the path to reveal the end of the text that was cut off.<\/div>\n<h3>Flipping The Text Over The Path<\/h3>\n<p>As you're dragging your text along the path, be careful not to accidentally drag <strong>across<\/strong> the path. If you do, the text will flip to the other side and reverse direction: <\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/basics\/cs6\/type-on-a-path\/type-flipped-on-path.jpg\" alt=\"The text has been flipped to the other side of the path.\" width=\"554\" height=\"552\" \/>\n<div class=\"caption\">Dragging across the path flips and reverses the text.<\/div>\n<p>Depending on the effect you're going for, flipping and reversing the text like this may be what you wanted to do (it's actually a feature, not a glitch). But if you didn't do it on purpose, simply drag back across the path with the Path Selection Tool. Your text will flip back over to the original side, and it will revert back to its original direction. <\/p>\n<h3>Hiding The Path<\/h3>\n<p>When you're done positioning your text and you're happy with the results, hide the path in the document by selecting any layer other than your <strong>Type layer<\/strong> in the Layers panel. In my case, my document only has two layers&mdash;the Type layer and the Background layer that holds my image&mdash;so I'll click on the <strong>Background layer<\/strong> to select it:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/basics\/cs6\/type-on-a-path\/select-background-layer.png\" alt=\"Selecting the Background layer in Photoshop.\" width=\"262\" height=\"301\" \/>\n<div class=\"caption\">Select any layer other than the Type layer to hide the path in the document.<\/div>\n<p>With my path now hidden and the text flipped back over to its original side, here's my final result: <\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/basics\/cs6\/type-on-a-path\/photoshop-type-on-path.jpg\" alt=\"Creating type on a path in Photoshop.\" width=\"552\" height=\"500\" \/>\n<div class=\"caption\">The final result.<\/div>\n<p>Keep in mind that even though we've added the type to a path, Photoshop has not done anything fancy with the text itself. It's still just text, which means you can go back at any time and edit it, or completely change it if you need to.
