If you're one of the many digital photographers or designers who are using the web these days either to show a client the work you've done for them or to show off your portfolio, one of the major concerns is that someone out there is going to steal your work. And while there's no guarantee that anything you do will stop them, there are things we can do to make life more difficult for them. One of those things is to add a copyright watermark to your images, and in this Photoshop tutorial, we're going to see how easy it is to do.<\/p>\n<p>This version of the tutorial is for Photoshop CS5 and earlier. For Photoshop CS6 and CC (Creative Cloud), check out our <a href=\"\/photo-effects\/add-copyright-watermark-pattern\/\">new updated version<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"clear:both;\">We'll use this photo as our example:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/copyright\/original-image.jpg\" alt=\"The original image\" width=\"508\" height=\"338\" style=\"margin-bottom:12px;\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Let's say this was a photo I took for a client and I want to show it to them as a proof. Let's get started!<\/p>\n<aside><p class=\"members-ad-top\"><a href=\"\/print-ready-pdfs\/\">Download all of our Photoshop tutorials as PDFs!<\/a><\/p><\/aside>\n<h4><span>Step 1:<\/span> Open A New Blank Document With A Transparent Background<\/h4>\n<p>Go up to the <strong>File menu<\/strong> at the top of the screen and select <strong>New...<\/strong> to bring up the <strong>New Document<\/strong> dialog box. I'm going to enter <strong>6 inches<\/strong> for the width, <strong>4 inches<\/strong> for the height, and <strong>300 pixels\/inch<\/strong> for the resolution. For Background Contents, make sure you set it to <strong>Transparent<\/strong> by clicking on the down-pointing arrow and selecting it from the list:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/copyright\/new-document.gif\" alt=\"The New Document dialog box\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Photoshop's New Document dialog box.<\/div>\n<p>Click OK, and the new blank document appears:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/copyright\/new-blank-document.gif\" alt=\"The new blank document\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The new blank document with a transparent background.<\/div>\n<h4><span>Step 2:<\/span> Type Your Copyright Information<\/h4>\n<p>Grab your <strong>Type tool<\/strong> from the Tools palette or by pressing <strong>T<\/strong> on your keyboard. Then press <strong>D<\/strong> on your keyboard to set black as your foreground color if it isn't already, and enter your copyright information.<\/p>\n<p>To access the copyright symbol \"\u00a9\", press <strong>Option-G<\/strong> on a Mac, or hold down the <strong>Alt<\/strong> key on Windows and enter <strong>0169<\/strong> on the numeric keypad. I'll enter \"\u00a9 2007 Patterson Photography\": <\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/copyright\/patterson-photography.gif\" alt=\"Adding copyright information\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Typing my copyright information.<\/div>\n<h4><span>Step 3:<\/span> Rotate The Text With Free Transform<\/h4>\n<p>The copyright watermark tends to look better with the text rotated a bit, so once you've entered your text, press <strong>Ctrl+T<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Command+T<\/strong> (Mac) to bring up the <strong>Free Transform<\/strong> handles around your text, then place your mouse cursor just outside one of the corner handles and drag left or right with your mouse to rotate the text. Hold down the <strong>Shift<\/strong> key as you drag to rotate in nice, even increments:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/copyright\/rotate-text.gif\" alt=\"Rotate the text with the Free Transform command\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Rotate the text with Photoshop's Free Transform command.<\/div>\n<p>Press <strong>Enter<\/strong> (Win) or <strong>Return<\/strong> (Mac) to apply the rotation when you're done.<\/p>\n<h4><span>Step 4:<\/span> Trim The Document Around The Text<\/h4>\n<p>Go up to the <strong>Image menu<\/strong> next and select <strong>Trim<\/strong>. This brings up the Trim dialog box. We want to trim away all the extra space around the text, and since all the extra space is made up of transparent pixels, select the first option at the top of the Trim dialog box, <strong>Transparent Pixels<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/copyright\/trim-dialog-box.gif\" alt=\"Photoshop's Trim dialog box\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Photoshop's \"Trim\" dialog box.<\/div>\n<p>Click OK, and Photoshop trims away all the extra space around the text:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/copyright\/text-trimmed.gif\" alt=\"Photoshop removes the extra space around the text\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The extra space around the text is now gone.<\/div>\n<h4><span>Step 5:<\/span> Define The Text As A Pattern<\/h4>\n<p>Go up to the <strong>Edit menu<\/strong> at the top of the screen and select <strong>Define Pattern<\/strong>. We're going to create a pattern out of our copyright information. The <strong>Pattern Name<\/strong> dialog box appears:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/copyright\/patten-name.gif\" alt=\"Photoshop's Pattern Name dialog box\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Photoshop's \"Pattern Name\" dialog box.<\/div>\n<p>Name your new pattern \"copyright\" and then click OK.<\/p>\n<h4><span>Step 6:<\/span> Close The Copyright Document<\/h4>\n<p>We've done everything we need to do with our copyright document, so go ahead and close out of it at this point, leaving just your original image open on the screen.<\/p>\n<h4><span>Step 7:<\/span> Add A New Layer In The Original Image Document<\/h4>\n<p>Back in our original image document, we currently have one layer, the Background layer, which contains our image. We don't want to add our copyright information directly to the Background layer, so either click on the <strong>New Layer<\/strong> icon at the bottom of the Layers palette or use the keyboard shortcut <strong>Shift+Ctrl+Alt+N<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Shift+Command+Option+N<\/strong> (Mac) to create a new layer above the Background layer, which Photoshop names \"Layer 1\":<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/copyright\/new-layer.jpg\" alt=\"Create a new layer above the Background layer\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Click the New Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers palette or use the keyboard shortcut to add a new layer above the Background layer.<\/div>\n<h4><span>Step 8:<\/span> Fill The New Layer With The Copyright Pattern<\/h4>\n<p>With our new layer selected in the Layers palette, go up to the <strong>Edit menu<\/strong> at the top of the screen and select <strong>Fill<\/strong>, which brings up the Fill dialog box. For \"Contents\", click on the down-pointing arrow and select <strong>Pattern<\/strong> from the list:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/copyright\/choose-pattern.jpg\" alt=\"Choose Pattern as the Fill contents\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Choose \"Pattern\" as the Fill contents.<\/div>\n<p>Then, with Pattern selected, click on the little thumbnail image beside the words <strong>Custom Pattern<\/strong> and then choose your copyright pattern from the list that appears. It will be the last pattern at the bottom:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/copyright\/choose-copyright-pattern.jpg\" alt=\"Select the copyright pattern from the list\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Choose your copyright pattern from the list of custom patterns.<\/div>\n<p>Click OK, and your new layer is filled with a repeating pattern of your copyright information:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/copyright\/image-copyright.jpg\" alt=\"The image is filled with the copyright pattern\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The copyright pattern is now repeating across the image.<\/div>\n<h4><span>Step 9:<\/span> Change The Blend Mode To \"Overlay\" and Lower The Opacity<\/h4>\n<p>The only problem now is that the text is too prominent. It's blocking much of the image from view. To fix that, with the new layer selected, go up to the <strong>layer blend mode<\/strong> options in the top left of the Layers palette, click on the down-pointing arrow beside the word \"Normal\" and select <strong>Overlay<\/strong> from the list. Then move over to the <strong>Opacity<\/strong> option beside it and reduce the opacity as needed.
