I used Arial Bold for the font:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/ghostly-blur\/original.gif\" alt=\"The original Photoshop document. Image &copy; 2011 Photoshop Essentials.com.\" width=\"285\" height=\"225\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The Layers panel showing the two layers currently in the document.<\/div>\n<p>Make sure the Type layer is selected in the Layers panel (selected layers are highlighted in blue), then go up to the <strong>Layer<\/strong> menu in the Menu Bar along the top of the screen, choose <strong>Rasterize<\/strong>, then choose <strong>Type<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/ghostly-blur\/layer-rasterize-type.gif\" alt=\"The Rasterize Type command in Photoshop. Image &copy; 2011 Photoshop Essentials.com.\" width=\"387\" height=\"102\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Go to Layer > Rasterize > Type.<\/div>\n<p>\"Rasterizing\" type just means we're converting it from editable text into pixels, which we need to do before Photoshop will let us apply any filters to it. Nothing will appear to have changed in the document window, but we can see in the Layers panel that the Type layer has become a normal pixel-based layer:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/ghostly-blur\/type-rasterized.gif\" alt=\"The type has been rasterized in Photoshop. Image &copy; 2011 Photoshop Essentials.com.\" width=\"285\" height=\"225\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Once text has been rasterized (converted to pixels), it's no longer editable.<\/div>\n<h4>Step 2: Make Three Copies Of The Layer<\/h4>\n<p>We need to make three copies of our rasterized text, so go up to the <strong>Layer<\/strong> menu, choose <strong>New<\/strong>, then choose <strong>Layer via Copy<\/strong>, or press <strong>Ctrl+J<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Command+J<\/strong> (Mac) to access the same command with the faster keyboard shortcut:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/ghostly-blur\/layer-new-layer-via-copy.gif\" alt=\"The New Layer via Copy command in Photoshop. Image &copy; 2011 Photoshop Essentials.com.\" width=\"225\" height=\"108\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Go to Layer > New > Layer via Copy, or press Ctrl+J (Win) \/ Command+J (Mac).<\/div>\n<p>Either way tells Photoshop to make a copy of the layer and place it above the original:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/ghostly-blur\/blur-copy.gif\" alt=\"Blur copy. Image &copy; 2011 Photoshop Essentials.com.\" width=\"285\" height=\"261\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The new layer appears above the original in the Layers panel.<\/div>\n<p>Do the same thing two more times, either by choosing <strong>Layer<\/strong> > <strong>New<\/strong> > <strong>Layer via Copy<\/strong> twice or by pressing <strong>Ctrl+J<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Command+J<\/strong> (Mac) twice, although the keyboard shortcut is much faster. When you're done, you should have 4 text layers, plus the Background layer on the bottom:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/ghostly-blur\/five-layers.gif\" alt=\"Five layers in the Layers panel. Image &copy; 2011 Photoshop Essentials.com.\" width=\"285\" height=\"297\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">You should now have 5 layers in total.<\/div>\n<h4>Step 3: Select The Original Text Layer<\/h4>\n<p>Click on the original text layer in the Layers panel (the one directly above the Background layer) to select it:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/ghostly-blur\/original-text-layer.gif\" alt=\"Selecting the original text layer in the Layers panel. Image &copy; 2011 Photoshop Essentials.com.\" width=\"285\" height=\"138\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Select the original text layer.<\/div>\n<h4>Step 4: Apply The Motion Blur Filter<\/h4>\n<p>Go up to the <strong>Filter<\/strong> menu at the top of the screen, choose <strong>Blur<\/strong>, then choose <strong>Motion Blur<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/ghostly-blur\/filter-blur-motion-blur.gif\" alt=\"Selecting the Motion Blur filter in Photoshop. Image &copy; 2011 Photoshop Essentials.com.\" width=\"158\" height=\"124\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Go to Filter > Blur > Motion Blur.<\/div>\n<p>This opens Photoshop's Motion Blur dialog box. Let's start by adding a vertical motion blur  to the text. Change the <strong>Angle<\/strong> of the blur to <strong>90&deg;<\/strong>, then begin dragging the <strong>Distance<\/strong> slider at the bottom of the dialog box towards the right to increase the amount of  blurring. Keep an eye on the document window as you drag the slider to judge the results. I'm going to set my Distance value to around 150 pixels which I think looks good with my image, but the value you use may be different depending on the size and resolution of your document:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/ghostly-blur\/photoshop-motion-blur.jpg\" alt=\"The Motion Blur dialog box in Photoshop. Image &copy; 2011 Photoshop Essentials.com.\" width=\"342\" height=\"399\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Set the Angle to 90&deg;, then drag the Distance slider to apply blurring.<\/div>\n<p>When you're done, click OK to close out of the dialog box. Image &copy; 2011 Photoshop Essentials.com.\" width=\"285\" height=\"174\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Select the first \"copy\" layer.<\/div>\n<h4>Step 6: Apply The Motion Blur Filter Again<\/h4>\n<p>Press <strong>Ctrl+Alt+F<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Command+Option+F<\/strong> (Mac) on your keyboard. This is a quick way to access the last filter we used, which in our case was the Motion Blur filter. Photoshop will re-open the filter's dialog box for us so we can make any changes we need before the filter is applied. This time, we'll add a horizontal motion blur, so change the <strong>Angle<\/strong> to <strong>0&deg;<\/strong>. You can leave the Distance option set to the same value you used last time:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/ghostly-blur\/motion-blur-2.gif\" alt=\"Changing the Angle in the Motion Blur dialog box in Photoshop. Photoshop applies a horizontal motion blur  to the layer:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/ghostly-blur\/motion-blur-added.jpg\" alt=\"Horizontal and vertical motion blur has been added to the text. Image &copy; 2011 Photoshop Essentials.com.\" width=\"650\" height=\"351\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Vertical and horizontal motion blur has been added to the text.<\/div>\n<h4>Step 7: Merge The Two Layers Together<\/h4>\n<p>Go up to the <strong>Layer<\/strong> menu and choose <strong>Merge Down<\/strong>, or press <strong>Ctrl+E<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Command+E<\/strong> (Mac) on your keyboard:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/ghostly-blur\/layer-merge-down.gif\" alt=\"Photoshop Merge Down layers command. Image &copy; 2011 Photoshop Essentials.com.\" width=\"253\" height=\"121\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Go to Layer > Merge Down, or press Ctrl+E (Win) \/ Command+E (Mac).<\/div>\n<p>Photoshop will merge the two motion blur layers together in the Layers panel, leaving us with three text layers:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/ghostly-blur\/motion-blur-merged.gif\" alt=\"The motion blur text layers have been merged together. Image &copy; 2011 Photoshop Essentials.com.\" width=\"285\" height=\"261\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The horizontal and vertical motion blur effects are now on the same layer.<\/div>\n<h4>Step 8: Apply The Gaussian Blur Filter<\/h4>\n<p>The edges of the motion blur effect look too sharp, so let's apply a different type of blurring to soften them. Go up to the <strong>Filter<\/strong> menu once again, choose <strong>Blur<\/strong>, then choose <strong>Gaussian Blur<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/ghostly-blur\/filter-blur-gaussian-blur.gif\" alt=\"Selecting the Gaussian Blur filter in Photoshop. Image &copy; 2011 Photoshop Essentials.com.\" width=\"158\" height=\"125\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur.<\/div>\n<p>This opens the Gaussian Blur dialog box. Drag the <strong>Radius<\/strong> slider at the bottom a little towards the right to add a small amount of blurring, just enough to soften the edges of the motion blur effect. A Radius value of around <strong>2 pixels<\/strong> should be enough, although you may need to use a higher value for a larger document. As always, keep an eye on the document window as you drag the slider to judge the results:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/ghostly-blur\/photoshop-gaussian-blur.gif\" alt=\"Photoshop Gaussian Blur filter dialog box. Image &copy; 2011 Photoshop Essentials.com.\" width=\"285\" height=\"261\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Select the \"copy 2\" text layer above the merged layer.<\/div>\n<h4>Step 10: Apply The Gaussian Blur Filter<\/h4>\n<p>Press <strong>Ctrl+Alt+F<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Command+Option+F<\/strong> (Mac) on your keyboard. This again re-opens the dialog box for last filter we used, which this time was the Gaussian Blur filter. We'll use the Gaussian Blur filter here to add a glow effect around the letters in the text. Drag the <strong>Radius<\/strong> slider towards the right and as you drag, you'll see a glow begin to appear around the text. I'm going to increase my Radius value to <strong>8 pixels<\/strong>, which gives my letters a subtle, soft glow:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/ghostly-blur\/gaussian-blur-2.gif\" alt=\"The Gaussian Blur dialog box in Photoshop. Image &copy; 2011 Photoshop Essentials.com.\" width=\"285\" height=\"261\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Click on the top layer to select it.<\/div>\n<h4>Step 12: Merge The Layer With The Layer Below It<\/h4>\n<p>Just as we did in Step 7, go up to the <strong>Layer<\/strong> menu and choose <strong>Merge Down<\/strong>, or press <strong>Ctrl+E<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Command+E<\/strong> (Mac) for the keyboard shortcut. This will merge the top layer with the blurred \"glow\" layer below it, leaving us with just two text layers:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/ghostly-blur\/top-layer-merged.gif\" alt=\"The top layer has been merged with the layer below it. Image &copy; 2011 Photoshop Essentials.com.\" width=\"66\" height=\"107\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Selecting the Gradient Tool.<\/div>\n<h4>Step 15: Choose A White To Black Gradient<\/h4>\n<p>With the layer mask selected (the mask thumbnail in the Layers panel will have a white highlight border around it letting you know it's selected), press the letter <strong>D<\/strong> on your keyboard to quickly reset Photoshop's <strong>Foreground and Background colors<\/strong> if needed, which sets the Foreground color to white and the Background color to black. Then <strong>right-click<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Control-click<\/strong> (Mac) anywhere inside the document window to quickly open the <strong>Gradient Picker<\/strong> and choose the <strong>white to black gradient<\/strong> (top left corner - it's actually the Foreground to Background gradient) by clicking on its thumbnail. Press <strong>Enter<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Return<\/strong> (Mac) when you're done to close out of the Gradient Picker:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/ghostly-blur\/photoshop-gradient-picker.gif\" alt=\"Photoshop Gradient Picker. Image &copy; 2011 Photoshop Essentials.com.\" width=\"275\" height=\"175\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Choose the Foreground to Background (white to black) gradient in the top left corner.<\/div>\n<h4>Step 16: Select The \"Reflected Gradient&quot; Option<\/h4>\n<p>In the Options Bar along the top of the screen, click on the <strong>Reflected Gradient<\/strong> icon to change the style of gradient we're about to draw:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/ghostly-blur\/photoshop-reflected-gradient.gif\" alt=\"Photoshop Reflected Gradient option in the Options Bar. Image &copy; 2011 Photoshop Essentials.com.\" width=\"453\" height=\"66\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Click on the Reflected Gradient icon in the Options Bar.<\/div>\n<h4>Step 17: Draw A Gradient On The Layer Mask<\/h4>\n<p>With the Reflected Gradient option selected, click anywhere along the horizontal center of the text to set the starting point for the gradient. Then hold down your <strong>Shift<\/strong> key and, with your mouse button still held down, drag straight up to the top of the text. Holding the Shift key as you drag makes it easier to drag straight upward:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/ghostly-blur\/drag-gradient.jpg\" alt=\"Drawing a reflected gradient in Photoshop. Image &copy; 2011 Photoshop Essentials.com.\" width=\"650\" height=\"228\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Click in the center of the text, then hold Shift and drag to the top of the text.<\/div>\n<p>Release your mouse button at the top of the text, at which point Photoshop draws the reflected gradient on the layer mask, leaving only the middle of the text completely visible, then gradually fading away towards the top and bottom of the letters, allowing the motion blur effect behind them to show through:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/ghostly-blur\/text-reflected-gradient.jpg\" alt=\"The text after drawing a reflected gradient on the layer mask. Only the middle of the word remains 100% visible.<\/div>\n<h4>Step 18: Duplicate The Layer<\/h4>\n<p>Press <strong>Ctrl+J<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Command+J<\/strong> (Mac) on your keyboard to quickly duplicate the layer:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/ghostly-blur\/duplicate-top-layer.gif\" alt=\"Making a copy of the top layer. For CS3 and earlier, a separate dialog box will open. First, select the <strong>Colorize<\/strong> option by clicking inside its checkbox. Then drag the Hue slider to select a color to use, and drag the Saturation slider to adjust the intensity of the color. I'm going to choose a ghostly green  by setting my <strong>Hue<\/strong> value to <strong>123<\/strong>, then I'll increase the <strong>Saturation<\/strong> value to <strong>40<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/ghostly-blur\/photoshop-hue-saturation.gif\" alt=\"Photoshop Hue\/Saturation controls.
