Choose any size you wish for your document. I'll use the preset 640x480 size:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/digital-tiles\/new-document-db.gif\" alt=\"Adobe Photoshop Text Effects: Creating a new document in Photoshop\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Create a new Photoshop document. I'm using the 640x480 preset size.<\/div>\n<h4><span>Step 2:<\/span> Fill The Background Layer With Black<\/h4>\n<p>Press <strong>D<\/strong> on your keyboard to quickly reset Photoshop's foreground and background colors, which sets <strong>black<\/strong> as your foreground color. Then use the keyboard shortcut <strong>Alt+Backspace<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Option+Delete<\/strong> (Mac) to fill the Background layer with black:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/digital-tiles\/fill-with-black.gif\" alt=\"Adobe Photoshop Text Effects: Fill the Background layer with black\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The Photoshop document is now filled with black.<\/div>\n<h4><span>Step 3:<\/span> Set Your Foreground Color To A Dark Color And Add Your Text<\/h4>\n<p>Click on the <strong>Foreground color swatch<\/strong> in the Tools palette:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/digital-tiles\/foreground-color-swatch.gif\" alt=\"Adobe Photoshop Text Effects: Clicking on the Foreground color swatch in Photoshop's Tools palette\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Click on the Foreground color swatch to change its color.<\/div>\n<p>This will bring up Photoshop's <strong>Color Picker<\/strong>. We're going to choose a color for the text. You can choose whichever color you like for your text, but whatever color that is, choose a dark shade of it to start with. I want to use green for my color, so I'll choose a dark shade of green:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/digital-tiles\/color-picker.jpg\" alt=\"Adobe Photoshop Text Effects: Choosing a dark green in Photoshop's Color Picker.\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Use Photoshop's Color Picker to select a dark shade of the color you want to use for the text.<\/div>\n<p>Once you've chosen your color, click OK to exit out of the Color Picker. <\/p>\n<p>Select your <strong>Type tool<\/strong> from the Tools palette, or press the letter <strong>T<\/strong> on your keyboard to quickly select it:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/digital-tiles\/select-type-tool.gif\" alt=\"Adobe Photoshop Text Effects: Selecting the Type tool from Photoshop's Tools palette.\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Select the Type tool from the Tools palette or press \"T\" on your keyboard.<\/div>\n<p>Then, with the Type tool selected, go up to the <strong>Options Bar<\/strong> at the top of the screen and choose your font and font size. This effect will work best with a large, thick font, so I'll use \"Impact\" for the tutorial. Then click inside your document and enter your text. I'm going to type the word \"digital\" since I think this effect has a bit of a digital-ish look to it:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/digital-tiles\/digital.gif\" alt=\"Adobe Photoshop Text Effects: Typing the word 'digital' into the document.\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Click inside the document and enter your type.<\/div>\n<p>Use the <strong>Move tool<\/strong> to center your text in the document, and resize the text if needed by using the keyboard shortcut <strong>Ctrl+T<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Command+T<\/strong> (Mac) to bring up Photoshop's <strong>Free Transform<\/strong> handles around your text, then hold down <strong>Shift+Alt<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Shift+Option<\/strong> (Mac) and drag any of the corner points. Holding Shift constrains the text proportions, and holding Alt\/Option causes the text to resize from the center. Press <strong>Enter<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Return<\/strong> (Mac) when you're done to accept the transformation.<\/p>\n<h4><span>Step 4:<\/span> Rasterize The Text Layer<\/h4>\n<p>We're going to be applying one of Photoshop's filters to the text, but we can't do that without first converting the text into pixels, which is known as \"rasterizing\" it. To do that, with the text layer selected in the Layers palette, go up to the <strong>Layer menu<\/strong> at the top of the screen, choose <strong>Rasterize<\/strong>, and then choose <strong>Type<\/strong>. Nothing will seem to have happened in the document, but if you look in your Layers palette, you'll see that the text layer is now a normal layer:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/digital-tiles\/rasterize.gif\" alt=\"Adobe Photoshop Text Effects: The text layer is now a normal layer.\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">After rasterizing the type, the text layer is now a normal layer in the Layers palette.<\/div>\n<h4><span>Step 5:<\/span> Duplicate The Text Layer<\/h4>\n<p>We need to create a duplicate of the layer with our text on it, so to do that, with the text layer selected, use the keyboard shortcut <strong>Ctrl+J<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Command+J<\/strong> (Mac). You'll now have a duplicate of the text layer in the Layers palette:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/digital-tiles\/duplicate-text.gif\" alt=\"Adobe Photoshop Text Effects: Photoshop's Layers palette now showing the copy of the text layer.\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Press \"Ctrl+J\" (Win) \/ \"Command+J\" (Mac) to duplicate the text layer.<\/div>\n<h4><span>Step 6:<\/span> Hide The Original Text Layer<\/h4>\n<p>With the copy of our text layer created, we're going to hide the original text layer from view by clicking on its <strong>Layer Visibility<\/strong> icon (the \"eyeball\" icon) on the far left of the layer in the Layers palette:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/digital-tiles\/hide-original-text.gif\" alt=\"Adobe Photoshop Text Effects: Click on the original text layer's visibility icon to hide it.\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Hide the original text layer by clicking on its \"Layer Visibility\" (eyeball) icon.<\/div>\n<p>You won't see any change in the document since the copy of the text layer is blocking the original text layer from view, but if you look back in the Layers palette, you'll see that the eyeball icon has disappeared, indicating that the layer is now hidden.<\/p>\n<h4><span>Step 7:<\/span> Apply Photoshop's \"Tiles\" Filter Twice To The Text Copy Layer<\/h4>\n<p>With the text copy layer selected in the Layers palette, go up to the <strong>Filter menu<\/strong> at the top of the screen, choose <strong>Stylize<\/strong>, and then choose <strong>Tiles<\/strong>. This brings up Photoshop's Tiles filter dialog box:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/digital-tiles\/tiles-filter-db.gif\" alt=\"Adobe Photoshop Text Effects: Photoshop's 'Tiles' filter dialog box.\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Photoshop Tutorials: Go to Filter > Stylize > Tiles to bring up the Tiles filter dialog box.<\/div>\n<p>No need to change any of the options. Simply click OK to exit out of the dialog box and apply the filter to the text. Then use the keyboard shortcut <strong>Ctrl+F<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Command+F<\/strong> (Mac) to apply the same filter a second time. Your text will now look something like this:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/digital-tiles\/tiles-applied.gif\" alt=\"Adobe Photoshop Text Effects: The text after applying the Tiles filter.\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The text after applying the Tiles filter.<\/div>\n<h4><span>Step 8:<\/span> Select And Delete The White Areas In The Text<\/h4>\n<p>Grab the <strong>Magic Wand tool<\/strong> from the Tools palette, or press the letter <strong>W<\/strong> to quickly select it:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/digital-tiles\/select-magic-wand.gif\" alt=\"Adobe Photoshop Text Effects: Selecting the Magic Wand tool from Photoshop's Tools palette.\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Select the Magic Wand tool from the Tools palette, or press \"W\" on your keyboard.<\/div>\n<p>Up in the <strong>Options Bar<\/strong>, make sure <strong>Contiguous<\/strong> is not checked, otherwise we'd have to select each white area separately. Then click with the Magic Wand on any white area in the text and Photoshop will select all of the white areas at once:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/digital-tiles\/select-white.gif\" alt=\"Adobe Photoshop Text Effects: Click on any white area with the Magic Wand to select all the white areas in the text.\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Click on any white area with the Magic Wand to select all white areas inside the text.<\/div>\n<p>With all the white selected, press <strong>Delete<\/strong> on your keyboard to delete those areas. Press <strong>Ctrl+D<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Command+D<\/strong> (Mac) to deselect your selection. Your text will now look something like this:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/digital-tiles\/delete-white.gif\" alt=\"Adobe Photoshop Text Effects: The text after deleting the white areas.\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The text after deleting the white areas.<\/div>\n<h4><span>Step 9:<\/span> Duplicate The Original Text Layer And Move It To The Top Of The Layers Palette<\/h4>\n<p>Click back on the original text layer to select it, then duplicate it using the keyboard shortcut <strong>Ctrl+J<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Command+J<\/strong> (Mac). Then click on the duplicate layer you just created and drag it to the top of the Layers palette. You'll see a highlight bar appear along the top as you approach it. When you see that highlight bar, release your mouse button and the layer will drop into place:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/digital-tiles\/copy-2.gif\" alt=\"Adobe Photoshop Text Effects: Duplicate the original text layer and drag it to the top of the Layers palette.\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Duplicate the original text layer and drag it to the top of the Layers palette.<\/div>\n<h4><span>Step 10:<\/span> Click The Layer's Visibility Icon So It Appears In The Document<\/h4>\n<p>Since the original text layer is hidden from view, this new copy of it we've made is also hidden from view. We need it to be showing in the document, so click on it's Visibility icon, which will cause the eyeball to re-appear and the layer will now be visible:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/digital-tiles\/copy-2-visibility.gif\" alt=\"Adobe Photoshop Text Effects: Clicking the layer's visibility icon to reveal the layer in the document.\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Click the layer's visibility icon to reveal the layer in the document.<\/div>\n<h4><span>Step 11:<\/span> Make The Text A Lighter Shade Of The Color<\/h4>\n<p>Click back on the Foreground color swatch in the Tools palette to bring the Color Picker back up, then choose a slightly lighter shade of your text color:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/digital-tiles\/color-picker-2.jpg\" alt=\"Adobe Photoshop Text Effects: Selecting a slightly lighter shade of green for the text in Photoshop's Color Picker.\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Click on the Foreground color swatch once again and choose a slightly lighter shade of your text color in the Color Picker.<\/div>\n<p>Click OK to exit out of the Color Picker, then use the keyboard shortcut <strong>Shift+Alt+Backspace<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Shift+Option+Delete<\/strong> (Mac) to apply the color to the text:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/digital-tiles\/text-lighter-green.gif\" alt=\"Adobe Photoshop Text Effects: The image after applying the new color to the text.\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Press \"Shift+Alt+Backspace\" (Win) \/ \"Shift+Option+Delete\" (Mac) to apply the new color to the text.<\/div>\n<h4><span>Step 12:<\/span> Rotate The Canvas 90&deg; CW<\/h4>\n<p>Go up to the <strong>Image menu<\/strong> at the top of the screen, choose <strong>Rotate Canvas<\/strong>, then choose <strong>90\u00b0 CW<\/strong> to rotate the canvas 90\u00b0 to the right:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/digital-tiles\/rotate-canvas.gif\" alt=\"Adobe Photoshop Text Effects: Rotate the canvas 90\u00b0 clockwise.\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Rotate the canvas 90\u00b0 clockwise.<\/div>\n<h4><span>Step 13:<\/span> Apply The Tiles Filter Three Times To The Text<\/h4>\n<p>We're going to apply the Tiles filter again, this time to the new text layer. Since Tiles was the last filter we applied, there's no need to select it again from the Filter menu. We can   use the same keyboard shortcut <strong>Ctrl+F<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Command+F<\/strong> (Mac) to apply it, then press the keyboard shortcut two more times to apply the filter a total of three times. Then press <strong>Delete<\/strong> to delete them, just as we did before. Press <strong>Ctrl+D<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Command+D<\/strong> (Mac) to deselect your selection. Your text will now look something like this:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/digital-tiles\/filter-three-times.gif\" alt=\"Adobe Photoshop Text Effects: The text after applying the Tiles filter four times.\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Apply the Tiles filter four times to the text.<\/div>\n<h4><span>Step 20:<\/span> Select And Delete The White Areas<\/h4>\n<p>Once again, grab the <strong>Magic Wand <\/strong> and click on any of the white areas in the text, then press <strong>Delete<\/strong> to delete the white areas. Press <strong>Ctrl+D<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Command+D<\/strong> (Mac) to deselect your selection. Here's the text at this point:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/digital-tiles\/text-3.gif\" alt=\"Adobe Photoshop Text Effects: The text after deleting the white areas again.\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The text after deleting the white areas once again.<\/div>\n<h4><span>Step 21:<\/span> Duplicate The Original Text Layer Again And Move It To The Top Of The Layers Palette<\/h4>\n<p>We're going to do the same steps all over again, so first click on the original text layer in the Layers palette and press <strong>Ctrl+J<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Command+J<\/strong> (Mac) to duplicate it, then drag it to the top of the Layers palette. Click on its <strong>Layer Visibility<\/strong> icon so the layer is visible in the document:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/digital-tiles\/text-copy-4.gif\" alt=\"Adobe Photoshop Text Effects: Duplicate the original text layer again, drag it to the top of the Layers palette and click on its Layer Visibility icon.\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Duplicate the original text layer again, drag it to the top of the Layers palette and click on its Layer Visibility icon so it appears in the document.<\/div>\n<h4><span>Step 22:<\/span> Choose A Lighter Shade Of Your Text Color Once Again<\/h4>\n<p>Click back on the Foreground color swatch in the Tools palette and choose an even lighter shade of your text color. Almost done.<\/div>\n<h4><span>Step 31:<\/span> Add A Thin Black Stroke To The Top Text Layer<\/h4>\n<p>At this point, the basic effect is complete. I'm just going to finish it off by applying a thin black stroke around the different tile fragments on the top text layer to help set them apart from the rest of the effect. To do that, with the top text layer selected, click on the <strong>Layer Styles<\/strong> icon at the bottom of the Layers palette:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/digital-tiles\/layer-styles-icon.gif\" alt=\"Adobe Photoshop Text Effects: Clicking the Layer Styles icon at the bottom of the Layers palette.\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">With the top text layer selected, click on the \"Layer Styles\" icon at the bottom of the Layers palette.<\/div>\n<p>Choose <strong>Stroke<\/strong> from the list:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/digital-tiles\/choose-stroke.gif\" alt=\"Adobe Photoshop Text Effects: Choosing 'Stroke' from the list of Layer Styles.\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Click on \"Stroke\" to select it from the list of Layer Styles.<\/div>\n<p>This brings up the <strong>Layer Style<\/strong> dialog box set to the <strong>Stroke<\/strong> options in the middle column:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/type\/effects\/digital-tiles\/stroke-options.gif\" alt=\"Adobe Photoshop Text Effects: The Stroke options in the Layer Styles dialog box.\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Change the Stroke options circled in red.<\/div>\n<p>Make the changes that I've circled in red above. First, change the <strong>Color<\/strong> of the stroke to <strong>black<\/strong> by clicking on the color swatch and selecting black in the Color Picker. Lower the <strong>Size<\/strong> of the stroke to <strong>1 pixel<\/strong>. Change the <strong>Position<\/strong> of the stroke to <strong>Inside<\/strong>, and finally, lower the <strong>Opacity<\/strong> down to around <strong>20%<\/strong>. We just want a faint stroke, nothing heavy.<\/p>\n<p>Click OK  to exit out of the Layer Style dialog box, and you're done!
