We'll add grain and a  vignette effect, and we'll make the image look like it has faded over time by toning down the highlights, lightening the shadows and reducing contrast in the midtones. And we'll create the entire effect from start to finish using nothing more than Photoshop's Camera Raw Filter.<\/p>\n<p>To keep the &quot;old photo&quot; effect non-destructive, I'll show you how to apply the Camera Raw Filter as a smart filter. This will keep the effect separate from the image itself so you're not making any permanent changes. The original photo will remain completely unharmed.<\/p>\n<p>This tutorial has been updated to include recent changes to Camera Raw, and for best results, you'll want to be using the <a href=\"https:\/\/prf.hn\/l\/dlXjD2w\" title=\"Get Photoshop CC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">latest version of Photoshop CC<\/a>. But to keep the effect non-destructive, we'll need to apply the Camera Raw Filter as a <a href=\"\/basics\/how-to-use-smart-filters-in-photoshop\/\" title=\"View tutorial\">smart filter<\/a>. This will give you a better view of what you're doing. You can also toggle the Full Screen Mode on and off by pressing the letter <strong>F<\/strong> on your keyboard:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/cc\/old-photo-camera-raw\/update-2019\/camera-raw-filter-full-screen-icon.png\" alt=\"Switching the Camera Raw Filter to Full Screen Mode in Photoshop\" width=\"388\" height=\"158\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Clicking the Full Screen Mode icon.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 3: In the Basic panel, set the Treatment to Black &amp; White<\/h3>\n<p>The options for the Camera Raw Filter are all found in the panels along the right. And by default, the <strong>Basic<\/strong> panel is the one that opens first. To <a href=\"\/photo-editing\/converting-color-photos-to-black-and-white-in-photoshop\/\" title=\"View tutorial\">convert your color image to black &amp; white<\/a>, start by changing the <strong>Treatment<\/strong> option in the Basic panel from Color to <strong>Black &amp; White<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/cc\/old-photo-camera-raw\/update-2019\/camera-raw-treatment-black-white.png\" alt=\"Setting the Treatment option in Photoshop's Camera Raw Filter to Black &amp; White\" width=\"307\" height=\"131\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Setting the Treatment to Black &amp; White.<\/div>\n<p>This creates an initial black &amp; white version of the image:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/cc\/old-photo-camera-raw\/update-2019\/camera-raw-filter-black-white-treatment.jpg\" alt=\"The initial black and white conversion for the old photo effect in Photoshop\" width=\"700\" height=\"422\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The initial black and white conversion.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 4: Open the Black &amp; White Mix panel<\/h3>\n<p>We'll come back to the Basic panel later. But for now, to customize the black &amp; white version, open the <strong>Black &amp; White Mix<\/strong> panel by clicking its <strong>tab<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/cc\/old-photo-camera-raw\/update-2019\/black-white-mix-panel-tab.png\" alt=\"Opening the Black &amp; White Mix panel's tab in the Camera Raw Filter\" width=\"307\" height=\"139\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Clicking the Black &amp; White Mix panel's tab.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 5: Drag the color sliders to lighten or darken different areas<\/h3>\n<p>Then, use the <strong>color sliders<\/strong> (Reds, Oranges, Yellows, Greens, Aquas, Blues, Purples, Magentas) to lighten or darken any areas in the black and white version that originally contained those colors. <\/p>\n<p>For example, dragging the Reds slider to the right will lighten any areas in the black and white version that originally contained red. Dragging the Greens slider to the left will darken any areas that contained green, and so on. If you drag a color slider and nothing  happens, it's because no part of your image contained that particular color. <\/p>\n<p>Keep an eye on your image in the preview area as you drag the sliders to judge the results:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/cc\/old-photo-camera-raw\/update-2019\/black-white-mix-color-sliders.png\" alt=\"The Black &amp; White Mix color sliders in Photoshop's Camera Raw Filter\" width=\"307\" height=\"394\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Drag the color sliders to adjust the brightness of different areas in the black and white version.<\/div>\n<p>Experiment with the color sliders until you're happy with your black and white image. Here's my result:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/cc\/old-photo-camera-raw\/update-2019\/image-black-and-white-conversion.jpg\" alt=\"How to convert the color image to black and white for the old photo effect in Photoshop\" width=\"372\" height=\"552\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">My custom black and white version.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 6: Open the Split Toning panel<\/h3>\n<p>Next, open the <strong>Split Toning<\/strong> panel by clicking its <strong>tab<\/strong> (directly to the right of the Black &amp; White Mix tab):<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/cc\/old-photo-camera-raw\/update-2019\/split-toning-panel-tab.png\" alt=\"Opening the Split Toning panel in Photoshop's Camera Raw Filter\" width=\"307\" height=\"122\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Clicking the Split Toning panel's tab.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 7: Add a sepia tone to the image<\/h3>\n<p>With the  Split Toning panel, we can add a sepia tone to our black and white image, and we do that using the Hue and Saturation options. Notice that there are two sets of Hue and Saturation options, one for the highlights (the lightest areas of the image) and one for the shadows (the darkest areas). <\/p>\n<p>For the <strong>Highlights<\/strong> set at the top, set the <strong>Hue<\/strong> value to <strong>40<\/strong> for a nice orange-yellow. Then increase the <strong>Saturation<\/strong> value to <strong>20<\/strong>. Note that you won't see any change in the hue until you increase the saturation from its default value of 0.<\/p>\n<p>Then in the <strong>Shadows<\/strong> set at the bottom, use a slightly different <strong>Hue<\/strong> value of <strong>45<\/strong>, and increase the <strong>Saturation<\/strong> value to <strong>50<\/strong> for a more intense color effect in the shadows:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/cc\/old-photo-camera-raw\/update-2019\/split-toning-values.png\" alt=\"The Splt Tone panel settings in Photoshop's Camera Raw Filter\" width=\"307\" height=\"304\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The Hue and Saturation values for the Highlights (top) and Shadows (bottom).<\/div>\n<p>Here's my image with the sepia toning applied:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/cc\/old-photo-camera-raw\/update-2019\/image-sepia-tone.jpg\" alt=\"How to add a sepia tone to the old photo effect in Photoshop\" width=\"370\" height=\"550\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The &quot;old photo&quot; effect after adding the sepia tone.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 8: Open the Effects panel<\/h3>\n<p>Two panels down, two more to go. Open the <strong>Effects<\/strong> panel by clicking on its <strong>tab<\/strong> (third tab from the right):<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/cc\/old-photo-camera-raw\/update-2019\/effects-panel-tab.png\" alt=\"Opening the Effects panel in Photoshop's Camera Raw Filter\" width=\"308\" height=\"126\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Clicking the Effects (\"fx\") tab.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 9: Add grain to the image<\/h3>\n<p>The Effects panel in Camera Raw is limited to just two effects, grain and vignetting. But both will help us out with our &quot;old photo&quot; effect. <\/p>\n<p>Let's start by adding some grain. The three sliders in the <strong>Grain<\/strong> section let us adjust the amount, size and roughness of the grain. You can experiment with these sliders on your own to find the settings you like best, or use the same settings I'm using for my image. I've set the  <strong>Amount<\/strong> value to <strong>50<\/strong>, the <strong>Size<\/strong> to <strong>60<\/strong> and the <strong>Roughness<\/strong> also to <strong>60<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/cc\/old-photo-camera-raw\/update-2019\/grain-settings-effects-panel.png\" alt=\"The Grain settings in the Effects panel in Photoshop's Camera Raw Filter\" width=\"307\" height=\"179\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">My Grain effect settings.<\/div>\n<p>Here's a close-up view of my image to make it easier to see what the grain effect looks like:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/cc\/old-photo-camera-raw\/update-2019\/grain-effect-closeup.jpg\" alt=\"How to add grain to the old photo effect in Photoshop\" width=\"704\" height=\"400\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The &quot;old photo&quot; effect with the grain added.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 10: Fade the corners by adding a vignette to the image<\/h3>\n<p>Next, still in the Effects panel, we'll add a vignette effect using the <strong>Post Crop Vignetting<\/strong> section. The main control here is the <strong>Amount<\/strong> slider at the top. If you drag the Amount slider to the left, you'll darken the edges and corners of the image. That's usually the result you want when adding a vignette, but it's the opposite of what we want for our &quot;old photo&quot; effect. <\/p>\n<p>What we want to do here is <em>lighten<\/em> the corners of the photo, as if they've faded over time. Do do that, drag the Amount slider to the right. I'm going to increase my Amount value all the way to <strong>+80<\/strong>. You can leave the other sliders (Midpoint, Roundness, Feather and Highlights) set to their defaults:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/cc\/old-photo-camera-raw\/update-2019\/post-crop-vignetting-settings.png\" alt=\"How to lighten the corners of the old photo effect in Photoshop\" width=\"307\" height=\"254\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Increasing the Amount value to lighten the corners of the image.<\/div>\n<p>And here's my image in the preview area with the vignette applied:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/cc\/old-photo-camera-raw\/update-2019\/old-photo-effect-vignette.jpg\" alt=\"How to add a vignette to the old photo effect in Photoshop\" width=\"369\" height=\"552\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The \"old photo\" effect after adding both the grain and a vignette.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 11: Reopen the Basic panel<\/h3>\n<p>Finally, reopen the <strong>Basic<\/strong> panel by clicking its <strong>tab<\/strong> (first tab on the left):<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/cc\/old-photo-camera-raw\/update-2019\/reopen-basic-panel.png\" alt=\"Opening the Basic panel in Photoshop's Camera Raw Filter\" width=\"321\" height=\"144\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Clicking the Basic tab.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 12: Lower the overall contrast of the image<\/h3>\n<p>Images that have faded over time have less overall contrast, and we can reduce the contrast of our image using a few simple sliders in the Basic panel. <\/p>\n<p>First, to tone down the highlights, lower the <strong>Highlights<\/strong> value by dragging the slider to the left. I'll lower mine to <strong>-70<\/strong>, but you'll want to keep an eye on your own image as you drag the slider to judge the results. Then, lighten the shadows by dragging the <strong>Shadows<\/strong> slider to the right. I'll increase my Shadows value to <strong>+80<\/strong> to really brighten them up. But again, you'll want to keep an eye on your image to see what value works best.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, to reduce the contrast in the midtones, click on the <strong>Clarity<\/strong> slider and drag it to the left. I'll lower my Clarity value to <strong>-40<\/strong>.
