I'm using Photoshop CS5 here but any recent version of Photoshop will work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"clear:both;\">Here's the photo I'll be starting with:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/vignette\/wedding-couple.jpg\" alt=\"A photo of a wedding couple. Let's get started!<\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<aside><p class=\"members-ad-top\"><a href=\"\/print-ready-pdfs\/\">Download all of our Photoshop tutorials as PDFs!<\/a><\/p><\/aside>\n<section>\n<h2 class=\"sub\">How To Create A Classic Vignette Effect<\/h2>\n<h3>Step 1: Add A White Solid Color Fill Layer<\/h3>\n<p>With the photo newly opened in Photoshop, we'll start by filling our document  with white, which will become the color of the vignette border. Normally, we would simply add a new blank layer to the document and then use Photoshop's Fill command to fill the new layer with white, but let's do something different. Click on the <strong>New Fill or Adjustment Layer<\/strong> icon at the bottom of the Layers panel (it's the circle split diagonally between black and white):<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/vignette\/new-fill-icon.gif\" alt=\"The New Fill or Adjustment Layer icon in the Layers panel in Photoshop.\" width=\"271\" height=\"238\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Click on the New Fill or Adjustment Layer icon.<\/div>\n<p>This opens a list of all the fill and adjustment layers we can choose from. Select a <strong>Solid Color<\/strong> fill layer from the top of the list:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/vignette\/solid-color-fill-layer.gif\" alt=\"Choosing a Solid Color fill layer in Photoshop.\" width=\"198\" height=\"101\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Choose Solid Color from the list.<\/div>\n<p>As its name implies, a Solid Color fill layer lets us quickly fill the document with a solid color. As soon as you choose Solid Color from the list, Photoshop pops open the <strong>Color Picker<\/strong> so we can select the color we want to use. Choose <strong>white<\/strong>, either by clicking in the top left corner of the large color selection box on the left or by entering <strong>255<\/strong> for the <strong>R<\/strong>, <strong>G<\/strong> and <strong>B<\/strong> values near the bottom center of the dialog box:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/vignette\/photoshop-color-picker.jpg\" alt=\"Choosing white from the Color Picker in Photoshop. Image &copy; 2010 Photoshop Essentials.com.\" width=\"566\" height=\"385\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Choose white from the Color Picker.<\/div>\n<p>Click OK to close out of the Color Picker, and the document is now filled with solid white:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/vignette\/document-white.gif\" alt=\"The document is now filled with white.\" width=\"282\" height=\"400\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The Solid Color fill layer fills the document with white.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 2: Select The Layer Mask<\/h3>\n<p>So why did we use a Solid Color fill layer here instead of just adding a normal layer and filling it with white? The reason is because the next thing we need to do is add a layer mask to the white-filled layer, but Photoshop's fill layers, like the Solid Color one we just added, already come with a built-in layer mask so there's no need for us to add one ourselves! If we look in the <a href=\"\/basics\/layers\/layers-panel\/\">Layers panel<\/a>, we see the fill layer, which Photoshop named &quot;Color Fill 1&quot;, sitting above the original image on the Background layer, and we see the <strong>layer mask thumbnail<\/strong> directly to the left of the layer's name. Click on the mask thumbnail to select it. A highlight border will appear around the thumbnail letting you know the layer mask itself is now selected:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/vignette\/layer-mask-thumbnail.gif\" alt=\"Selecting the layer mask thumbnail for the Solid Color fill layer.\" width=\"272\" height=\"291\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Fill layers come with their own layer masks. Click on the thumbnail to select the  mask.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 3: Select The Elliptical Marquee Tool<\/h3>\n<p>Select the <strong>Elliptical Marquee Tool<\/strong> from the Tools panel. By default, it's hiding behind the <a href=\"\/basics\/selections\/rectangular-marquee-tool\/\">Rectangular Marquee Tool<\/a>, so click  on the Rectangular Marquee Tool and hold your mouse button down for a second or two until a fly-out menu appears showing the other tools available in that spot, then choose the <a href=\"\/basics\/selections\/elliptical-marquee-tool\/\">Elliptical Marquee Tool<\/a> from the list:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/vignette\/elliptical-marquee-tool.gif\" alt=\"Selecting the Elliptical Marquee Tool in Photoshop.\" width=\"285\" height=\"125\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Click and hold on the Rectangular Marquee Tool, then select the Elliptical Marquee Tool from the fly-out menu.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 4: Drag Out An Elliptical Selection Outline<\/h3>\n<p>With the Elliptical Marquee Tool selected, click inside the document and drag out an elliptical selection outline in the center of the document. You can move the selection outline around to reposition it as you're drawing it by holding down your <strong>spacebar<\/strong> and dragging it to a new location. Release your spacebar to continue dragging out the selection. Don't worry about its exact size, shape or position for now because we can easily fix things up later. All we need at the moment is an initial elliptical selection outline:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/vignette\/elliptical-selection-outline.gif\" alt=\"An elliptical selection outline has been drawn in the document.\" width=\"352\" height=\"500\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Drag out an initial elliptical selection outline. The exact size, shape and position isn't important.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 5: Fill The Selection With Black<\/h3>\n<p>Go up to the <strong>Edit<\/strong> menu in the Menu Bar along the top of the screen and choose <strong>Fill<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/vignette\/edit-fill.gif\" alt=\"Selecting the Fill command from the Edit menu in Photoshop.\" width=\"264\" height=\"126\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Go to Edit &gt; Fill.<\/div>\n<p>This opens the Fill dialog box. Change the <strong>Use<\/strong> option at the top of the dialog box to <strong>Black<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/vignette\/photoshop-fill-dialog-box.gif\" alt=\"The Fill command dialog box in Photoshop.\" width=\"370\" height=\"257\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Change the Use option to Black.<\/div>\n<p>Click OK to close out of the Fill dialog box. Photoshop fills the selection with black, and because we had the <a href=\"\/basics\/layers\/layer-masks\/\">layer mask<\/a> selected on the Solid Color fill layer, the black effectively punches a hole through the fill layer, revealing the original photo on the Background layer behind it:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/vignette\/layer-mask-filled.jpg\" alt=\"The image after filling the selection on the layer mask with black.\" width=\"352\" height=\"500\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Filling the selection with black on the layer mask reveals the original photo underneath.<\/div>\n<p>The layer mask thumbnail in the Layers panel shows us the area we filled with black:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/vignette\/layer-mask-thumbnail-black.gif\" alt=\"The layer mask thumbnail now shows the black-filled elliptical shape.\" width=\"272\" height=\"291\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The layer mask thumbnail after filling the selection with black.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 6: Deselect The Selection<\/h3>\n<p>We don't need our selection outline anymore, so to remove it from the document, go up to the <strong>Select<\/strong> menu at the top of the screen and choose <strong>Deselect<\/strong>. You can also press <strong>Ctrl+D<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Command+D<\/strong> (Mac) to quickly deselect it using the keyboard shortcut if you prefer:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/vignette\/select-deselect.gif\" alt=\"To to Select &gt; Deselect.\" width=\"220\" height=\"117\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Go to Select &gt; Deselect.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 7: Apply The Gaussian Blur Filter<\/h3>\n<p>To soften the edges of the vignette border, we'll use Photoshop's Gaussian Blur filter. Go up to the <strong>Filter<\/strong> menu at the top of the screen, choose <strong>Blur<\/strong>, then choose <strong>Gaussian Blur<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/vignette\/filter-blur-gaussian-blur.gif\" alt=\"Selecting the Gaussian Blur filter in Photoshop.\" width=\"375\" height=\"161\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Go to Filter &gt; Blur &gt; Gaussian Blur.<\/div>\n<p>This opens the Gaussian Blur dialog box. Keep an eye on your image as you begin dragging the <strong>Radius<\/strong> slider at the bottom of the dialog box towards the right. The further to the right you drag the slider, the more blurring you'll apply to the vignette edges and the softer they'll become. The exact Radius value you end up using will depend on the size of the image you're working with. For me, a value of around 35 pixels works well, but your value may be different:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/vignette\/gaussian-blur-radius.jpg\" alt=\"Dragging the Radius slider in the Gaussian Blur filter dialog box in Photoshop.\" width=\"342\" height=\"350\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Soften the vignette edges by dragging the Radius slider towards the right.<\/div>\n<p>Click OK when you're done to close out of the dialog box. Your vignette edges should now appear softer:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/vignette\/image-gaussian-blur.jpg\" alt=\"The image after softening the photo edges.\" width=\"352\" height=\"500\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The image after softening the photo border edges.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 8: Reshape And Move The Border With Free Transform<\/h3>\n<p>With the photo border edges now softened, the only thing left to do is fine-tune it by resizing, reshaping and moving it as needed, and we can do all of that easily with Photoshop's Free Transform command. Go up to the <strong>Edit<\/strong> menu at the top of the screen and choose <strong>Free Transform<\/strong>. You can also press <strong>Ctrl+T<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Command+T<\/strong> (Mac) to quickly access Free Transform with the keyboard shortcut:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/vignette\/edit-free-transform.gif\" alt=\"Selecting the Free Transform command in Photoshop.\" width=\"264\" height=\"127\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Go to Edit &gt; Free Transform.<\/div>\n<p>This places Photoshop's Free Transform box and handles around the photo border. To resize and reshape it, simply click on any of the handles (the little squares) and drag them. If you hold down your <strong>Alt<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Option<\/strong> (Mac) key as you're dragging a handle, you'll resize the border from its center rather than from the side or corner. To move the border, simply click anywhere inside the bounding box and drag it around with your mouse. Continue dragging the handles and moving the border until you're happy with the way it looks. When you're done, press <strong>Enter<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Return<\/strong> (Mac) to accept the changes and exit out of the Free Transform command:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/vignette\/free-transform-handles.jpg\" alt=\"Resizing, reshaping and moving the vignette effect with Free Transform.\" width=\"352\" height=\"500\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Use the handles to resize and reshape the vignette edges as needed. Click inside the bounding box and drag with your mouse to reposition it.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 9: Trim Away Any Extra White Space<\/h3>\n<p>Finally, if you want to trim away any extra white space around the image, go up to the <strong>Image<\/strong> menu at the top of the screen and choose <strong>Trim<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/vignette\/image-trim.gif\" alt=\"Selecting the Trim command from the Image menu in Photoshop.\" width=\"213\" height=\"111\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Go to Image &gt; Trim.<\/div>\n<p>This opens the Trim dialog box.
