Let's get started!<\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<aside><p class=\"members-ad-top\"><a href=\"\/print-ready-pdfs\/\">Download all of our Photoshop tutorials as PDFs!<\/a><\/p><\/aside>\n<section>\n<h2 class=\"sub\">How To Create A Snowflakes Photo Border In Photoshop CS5<\/h2>\n<h3>Step 1: Create A New  Photoshop Document<\/h3>\n<p>Photoshop ships with a ready-made snowflake brush that we could use for our effect, but its default size is a little too small for our purposes here, and increasing a brush beyond its default size makes it look soft and dull. Since we want everything to look nice and sharp, we'll  quickly create our own, larger snowflake brush using one of Photoshop's built-in custom shapes (if you've already completed our <a href=\"\/photo-effects\/holiday-photo-border\/\">Holiday Photo Border tutorial<\/a>, you may already have a custom snowflake brush ready to use, in which case you can skip to Step 8).<\/p>\n<p>First, we'll need a document to create the brush in, so go up to the <strong>File<\/strong> menu in the Menu Bar along the top of the screen and choose <strong>New<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/file-new.gif\" alt=\"The New Document command in Photoshop.\" width=\"291\" height=\"112\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Go to File &gt; New.<\/div>\n<p>This opens the New Document dialog box. Enter <strong>200 pixels<\/strong> for both the <strong>Width<\/strong> and <strong>Height<\/strong>, and make sure the <strong>Background Contents<\/strong> option is set to <strong>White<\/strong>, then click OK to exit out of the dialog box. A new 200x200 pixel document, filled with white, will appear on your screen:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/new-document-dialog-box.gif\" alt=\"Photoshop New Document dialog box.\" width=\"597\" height=\"341\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Make sure your measurement type is set to pixels, not inches or anything else.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 2: Select The Custom Shape Tool<\/h3>\n<p>Select the <strong>Custom Shape Tool<\/strong> from Photoshop's Tools panel. By default, it's nested behind the Rectangle Tool, so click on the Rectangle Tool and hold your mouse button down for a second or two until a fly-out menu appears, then select the Custom Shape Tool from the list:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/photoshop-custom-shape-tool.gif\" alt=\"Photoshop Custom Shape Tool.\" width=\"255\" height=\"170\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Select the Custom Shape Tool.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 3: Load The Nature Shape Set<\/h3>\n<p>Not only does Photoshop ship with a ready-made snowflake brush, it also ships with a few snowflake custom shapes that we can choose from. We just need to load in the set that contains these shapes. To do that, with the Custom Shape Tool selected,<strong> right-click<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Control-click<\/strong> (Mac) anywhere inside the new document to quickly access the <strong>Shape Picker<\/strong>, then click on the small arrow in the top right corner:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/shape-picker.gif\" alt=\"Photoshop custom shape picker.\" width=\"265\" height=\"169\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Click on the small triangle in the top right corner of the Shape Picker.<\/div>\n<p>Clicking on the arrow opens a menu with lots of additional shape sets ready to be loaded in to Photoshop. The one we're looking for is the <strong>Nature<\/strong> set. Click on it to select it:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/nature-shapes.gif\" alt=\"Loading the Nature shape set in Photoshop.\" width=\"192\" height=\"127\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Select the Nature shape set from the menu.<\/div>\n<p>Photoshop will ask if you want to replace the current shapes with the Nature shapes or if you'd rather just append them to the list, which will add them below the original shapes. Click the <strong>Append<\/strong> button:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/append.gif\" alt=\"Appending the Nature shapes in Photoshop.\" width=\"442\" height=\"161\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Choose Append to add the Nature shapes in with the original shapes.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 4: Select One Of The Snowflake Shapes<\/h3>\n<p>Scroll through the list of thumbnails until you see the snowflake shapes (there's three of them in a row). If you have Tool Tips enabled in Photoshop's Preferences, the name of each shape will appear when you hover your mouse over its thumbnail. We only need one of the snowflake shapes for our photo border, so pick your favorite of the three by clicking on its thumbnail to select it, then press <strong>Enter<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Return<\/strong> (Mac) to close out of the Shape Picker. I'm going to choose the first snowflake (the one on the left):<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/select-snowflake.gif\" alt=\"Choosing a snowflake custom shape in Photoshop.\" width=\"264\" height=\"161\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Choose one of the three snowflake shapes by clicking on its thumbnail.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 5: Select The Fill Pixels Option<\/h3>\n<p>Photoshop gives us three different types of shapes that we can draw - vector shapes, paths and pixel-based shapes. We can switch between the types by selecting them in the Options Bar. Since we're going to create a brush out of the snowflake shape, and brushes are made of pixels, we'll draw pixel-based shapes. Click on the <strong>Fill Pixels<\/strong> icon in the Options Bar (the one on the right) to select it:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/fill-pixels.gif\" alt=\"The Fill Pixels icon in the Options Bar in Photoshop.\" width=\"591\" height=\"61\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Each icon in the row of three selects a different type of shape. The \"Fill Pixels\" icon is the one on the right.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 6: Drag Out A Snowflake<\/h3>\n<p>Make sure your <strong>Foreground color<\/strong> is set to <strong>black<\/strong> by pressing the letter <strong>D<\/strong> on your keyboard, which resets Photoshop's Foreground and Background colors to their defaults (black is the default Foreground color). Then, click near the top left corner inside the document, hold down your <strong>Shift<\/strong> key, then drag out a snowflake shape. Holding down the Shift key as you drag constrains the aspect ratio of the shape so it doesn't look distorted. If you need to reposition the shape as you're drawing it, hold down your <strong>spacebar<\/strong>, move the shape into position with your mouse, then release your spacebar and continue dragging:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/snowflake-shape.gif\" alt=\"Dragging out a snowflake shape in Photoshop.\" width=\"223\" height=\"245\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The black area will become the brush. The white area will be transparent.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 7: Create A Brush From The Shape<\/h3>\n<p>Go up to the <strong>Edit<\/strong> menu at the top of the screen and choose <strong>Define Brush Preset<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/define-brush-preset.gif\" alt=\"The Define Brush Preset command in Photoshop.\" width=\"265\" height=\"151\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Go to Edit &gt; Define Brush Preset.<\/div>\n<p>Name the new brush \"Snowflake\" when the Brush Name dialog box appears, then click OK to close out of it. You can also close out of the snowflake shape's document window at this point since we no longer need it (there's no need to save it  if Photoshop asks):<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/brush-name.gif\" alt=\"Naming the snowflake brush in Photoshop.\" width=\"566\" height=\"116\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Name the new brush \"Snowflake\".<\/div>\n<h3>Step 8: Open Your Photo<\/h3>\n<p>With the snowflake brush created, open the photo you want to add the border to. Here's the image I'll be using:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/original.jpg\" alt=\"A family with ice skates smiling. Image licensed from Shutterstock by Photoshop Essentials.com.\" width=\"643\" height=\"449\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The original image.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 9: Add A New Blank Layer<\/h3>\n<p>Click on the <strong>New Layer<\/strong> icon at the bottom of the Layers panel to add a new blank layer above the Background layer. Photoshop names the new layer \"Layer 1\":<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/new-layer.gif\" alt=\"Adding a new blank layer to the Photoshop document.\" width=\"285\" height=\"237\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Add a new blank layer above the image on the Background layer.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 10: Fill The New Layer With White<\/h3>\n<p>Go up to the <strong>Edit<\/strong> menu at the top of the screen and choose <strong>Fill<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/edit-fill.gif\" alt=\"Selecting the Fill command in Photoshop.\" width=\"264\" height=\"155\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Go to Edit &gt; Fill.<\/div>\n<p>This opens the Fill dialog box. Change the <strong>Use<\/strong> option to <strong>White<\/strong>, then click OK to close out of the dialog box. The document will appear filled with white:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/fill-dialog-box.gif\" alt=\"The Fill dialog box in Photoshop.\" width=\"370\" height=\"257\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Set the Use option to White, then click OK.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 11: Select The Area Where The Photo Will Appear<\/h3>\n<p>Go up to the <strong>Select<\/strong> menu and choose <strong>All<\/strong>. This selects the entire document, placing a selection outline around the edges:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/select-all.gif\" alt=\"The Select All command in Photoshop.\" width=\"220\" height=\"117\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Go to Select &gt; All.<\/div>\n<p>With the document now selected, go back up to the <strong>Select<\/strong> menu and this time, choose <strong>Transform Selection<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/select-transform-selection.gif\" alt=\"The Transform Selection command in Photoshop.\" width=\"221\" height=\"139\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Go to Select &gt; Transform Selection.<\/div>\n<p>The Transform Selection command lets us resize or reshape the selection outline itself without affecting whatever is inside the selection. Click on the <strong>top transform handle<\/strong> (the little square), hold down your <strong>Alt<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Option<\/strong> (Mac) key, then drag the handle a short distance inward towards the center of the document so  there's roughly a half inch between the selection outline and the document's outer edge. By holding down the Alt \/ Option key as you drag, you'll resize the selection outline from its center, causing the bottom transform handle to move at the same time. Then, do the same thing with the <strong>left transform handle<\/strong>, holding down Alt \/ Option and dragging it inward, leaving the same amount of space between the selection outline and the edge of the document. The right handle will move in at the same time. Press <strong>Enter<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Return<\/strong> (Mac) when you're done to accept the change:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/transforming-selection.gif\" alt=\"Resizing the selection outline in Photoshop.\" width=\"643\" height=\"450\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Hold down Alt (Win) \/ Option (Mac), then drag the top and left handles inward.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 12: Delete The Area Inside The Selection<\/h3>\n<p>Press <strong>Backspace<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Delete<\/strong> (Mac) on your keyboard to delete the white area inside the selection, revealing the photo underneath. Leave the selection outline active:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/area-deleted.jpg\" alt=\"The area inside the selection outline has been deleted.\" width=\"644\" height=\"450\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Delete the area inside the selection but leave the outline in place, since we still need it.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 13: Expand The Selection<\/h3>\n<p>We need to make the selection outline a little bigger. We could use the Transform Selection command again, but there's an even easier way. Go back up to the <strong>Select<\/strong> menu, choose <strong>Modify<\/strong>, then choose <strong>Expand<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/select-modify-expand.gif\" alt=\"Go to Select &gt; Modify &gt; Expand.\" width=\"365\" height=\"160\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Go to Select &gt; Modify &gt; Expand.<\/div>\n<p>When the Expand Selection dialog box appears, enter a value of around <strong>20<\/strong> pixels, then click OK:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/expand-20.gif\" alt=\"The Expand Selection dialog box in Photoshop.\" width=\"295\" height=\"106\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Expand the selection by 20 pixels or so.<\/div>\n<p>The edges of the selection will expand outward by 20 pixels. Notice that the corners of the selection outline, which were sharp a moment ago, have become rounded. This is a drawback to using the Expand Selection command and why it's not always the best choice for making selection outlines larger, but for our purposes here, the rounded corners won't cause us any problems:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/selection-expanded.jpg\" alt=\"The selection after expanding the edges by 20 pixels.\" width=\"644\" height=\"450\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">All four edges of the selection outline expand outward by 20 pixels.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 14: Apply The Gaussian Blur Filter<\/h3>\n<p>Next, we need to soften the edges of the photo border, creating a smooth transition between the border and the image in the center, and we can do that by blurring it (the border, not the image). Go up to the <strong>Filter<\/strong> menu at the top of the screen, choose <strong>Blur<\/strong>, then choose <strong>Gaussian Blur<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/filter-blur-gaussian-blur.gif\" alt=\"Selecting the Gaussian Blur command in Photoshop.\" width=\"374\" height=\"166\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Go to Filter &gt; Blur &gt; Gaussian Blur.<\/div>\n<p>When the Gaussian Blur dialog box appears, increase the <strong>Radius<\/strong> value for the blur to around <strong>8 pixels<\/strong>, which should soften the border edges nicely, then click OK to close out of the dialog box:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/gaussian-blur-filter.gif\" alt=\"Photoshop Gaussian Blur filter dialog box.\" width=\"343\" height=\"342\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Increase the Radius value to 8 pixels, then click OK.<\/div>\n<p>The border edges now appear softer. Once again, leave the selection outline active since we still need it. In fact, it's going to become the path for our snowflakes:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/edges-blurred.jpg\" alt=\"The photo border edges are now softer after blurring them.\" width=\"644\" height=\"450\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Softer border edges.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 15: Select The Brush Tool<\/h3>\n<p>Select the <strong>Brush Tool<\/strong> from the Tools panel:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/photoshop-brush-tool.gif\" alt=\"Photoshop Brush Tool.\" width=\"66\" height=\"153\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Select the Brush Tool.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 16: Select The Snowflake Brush<\/h3>\n<p>With the Brush Tool selected, <strong>right-click<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Control-click<\/strong> (Mac) anywhere inside the document to quickly open the <strong>Brush Picker<\/strong>, then scroll through the thumbnails until you find the snowflake brush we just created. It should be the last one in the list. Click on it to select it, then press <strong>Enter<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Return<\/strong> (Mac) to close out of the Brush Picker:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/select-snowflake-brush.gif\" alt=\"Selecting the custom snowflake brush.\" width=\"271\" height=\"263\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Click on the snowflake brush's thumbnail to select it, then press Enter (Win) \/ Return (Mac).<\/div>\n<h3>Step 17: Set The Brush Dynamics Options<\/h3>\n<p>Press <strong>F5<\/strong> on your keyboard to quickly open Photoshop's full <strong>Brushes<\/strong> panel, then click directly on the words <strong>Shape Dynamics<\/strong> in the left column of the panel. Make sure you click directly on the words, not just inside the checkbox, otherwise you'll turn Shape Dynamics on but won't be given access to its options:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/shape-dynamics.gif\" alt=\"Selecting the Shape Dynamics options in the Brushes panel in Photoshop.\" width=\"170\" height=\"178\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Click on the words \"Shape Dynamics\" in the left column of the Brushes panel.<\/div>\n<p>With Shape Dynamics selected, set both the <strong>Size Jitter<\/strong> and <strong>Angle Jitter<\/strong> options to <strong>100%<\/strong>, which will add lots of randomness to the size and rotation angle of the snowflakes:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/size-angle-jitter.gif\" alt=\"Setting the Size Jitter and Angle Jitter options in the Brushes panel.\" width=\"276\" height=\"287\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Set the Size Jitter and Angle Jitter to 100%.<\/div>\n<p>When you're done setting the Shape Dynamics options, click directly on the word <strong>Scattering<\/strong> in the left column of the Brushes panel, then increase the <strong>Scatter<\/strong> value to around <strong>250%<\/strong>, which will randomly scatter the snowflakes around instead of them all appearing in a straight line. When you're done, press <strong>F5<\/strong> once again to close out of the Brushes panel:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/scattering-options.gif\" alt=\"The Scattering options in the Brushes panel in Photoshop.\" width=\"433\" height=\"208\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Click on Scattering, then set Scatter to 250%.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 18: Convert The Selection Outline Into A Path<\/h3>\n<p>Switch over to your <strong>Paths<\/strong> panel, which is grouped in with the Layers and Channels panels (click on the name tabs at the top to switch between the panels). Then click on the <strong>Make Work Path From Selection<\/strong> icon at the bottom of the Paths panel:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/make-work-path.gif\" alt=\"Make work path from selection.\" width=\"285\" height=\"238\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Click the Make Work Path From Selection icon.<\/div>\n<p>Photoshop will convert the selection outline into a path, and a <strong>Work Path<\/strong> will appear in the Paths panel. The term \"work path\" simply means it's a temporary path. We could make it permanent by saving the path, but there's no need:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/work-path.gif\" alt=\"A work path appears in the Paths panel.\" width=\"285\" height=\"225\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Temporary paths are called \"work paths\" in Photoshop.<\/div>\n<p>If we look at the image in the document window, we see that the selection outline has been replaced by a thin, solid line, which is our path:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/image-path.jpg\" alt=\"The selection outline has been converted into a path.\" width=\"643\" height=\"450\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The thin line is the path the snowflakes will follow around the image.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 19: Set The Foreground Color To White And Lower The Brush Size<\/h3>\n<p>Press the letter <strong>X<\/strong> on your keyboard to swap Photoshop's Foreground and Background colors, which will set the <strong>Foreground color<\/strong> to <strong>white<\/strong> (Photoshop paints with the current Foreground color). Then, <strong>right-click<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Control-click<\/strong> (Mac) anywhere inside the document to once again bring up the <strong>Brush Picker<\/strong> and lower the <strong>Size<\/strong> of the brush down to around <strong>50 px<\/strong> (pixels), since the default size of our snowflake brush is too large for our photo border effect. Press <strong>Enter<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Return<\/strong> (Mac) when you're done to close out of the Brush Picker:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/brush-size.gif\" alt=\"Lowering the brush size in Photoshop.\" width=\"262\" height=\"189\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Drag the Size slider towards the left to lower the brush size.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 20: Stroke The Path With The Snowflake Brush<\/h3>\n<p>Finally, click on the <strong>Stroke Path With Brush<\/strong> icon at the bottom of the Paths panel:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/stroke-path-with-brush.gif\" alt=\"The Stroke Path With Brush icon in Photoshop.\" width=\"285\" height=\"238\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Click the Stroke Path With Brush icon, second from left.<\/div>\n<p>The first  snowflakes appear around the image, scattered along the path:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/first-snowflakes.jpg\" alt=\"Stroking the path with the snowflake brush.\" width=\"643\" height=\"450\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Scattered snowflakes with random sizes and angles appear along the path.<\/div>\n<p>Depending on the size of the image you're working with, you may find that the current brush size is too large or too small. If that's the case, press <strong>Ctrl+Z<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Command+Z<\/strong> (Mac) to undo the initial snowflakes, then simply use the left and right bracket keys on your keyboard to change the brush size. Pressing the <strong>left bracket key<\/strong> ( <strong>[<\/strong> ) makes the brush smaller while the <strong>right bracket key<\/strong> ( <strong>]<\/strong> ) makes it larger. Once you've resized your brush, click on the Stroke Path With Brush icon to try again. It may take a few attempts with different brush sizes to get it right.<\/p>\n<p>After adding your initial snowflakes, click the Stroke Path With Brush icon a few more times to add additional snowflakes to the border. When you're happy with the results, click anywhere in the empty gray area below the Work Path in the Paths panel to hide the path from view inside the document:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/snowflakes-photo-border\/hide-path.gif\" alt=\"Hiding the path from view.\" width=\"285\" height=\"225\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Click in the empty area in the Paths panel to turn the path off.<\/div>\n<p>Note that the Stroke Path With Brush option is grayed out and unavailable when the path is not visible in the document.
