Well, so much for the meteor shower (there's always next year, right?) as I raced back inside to play around in Photoshop and see where the idea would take me.<\/p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, creating this &quot;dancing in the stars&quot; effect (no relation to a certain tv show with a similar name) is very simple. In fact, a few of the steps are borrowed from our previous <strong><a href=\"\/photo-effects\/starry-sky\/\">Create A Starry Night Sky<\/a><\/strong> tutorial, so if you've worked through that one, some of this will already be familiar to you.<\/p>\n<p>To create this effect, you'll need a photo of two people dancing close together, preferably a bride and groom but it doesn't necessarily have to be. I'll be using Photoshop CS5 throughout the tutorial but any recent version will do. Let's get started!<\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<aside><p class=\"members-ad-top\"><a href=\"\/print-ready-pdfs\/\">Download all of our Photoshop tutorials as PDFs!<\/a><\/p><\/aside>\n<section>\n<h2 class=\"sub\">How To Create A Dancing In The Stars Effect<\/h2>\n<h3>Step 1: Create A New Document<\/h3>\n<p>To begin, create a new document for the effect by going up to the <strong>File<\/strong> menu in the Menu Bar at the top of the screen and choosing <strong>New<\/strong>, or press <strong>Ctrl+N<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Command+N<\/strong> (Mac) to access the command with the keyboard shortcut:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/file-new.gif\" alt=\"Go to File &gt; New.\" width=\"292\" height=\"111\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Go to File &gt; New.<\/div>\n<p>This opens Photoshop's New Document dialog box. I'll enter a standard photo frame size of <strong>8 inches<\/strong> for the <strong>Width<\/strong> and <strong>10 inches<\/strong> for the <strong>Height<\/strong> (the size you need may be different), and since I'll want to print the final result, I'll enter a <strong>Resolution<\/strong> value of <strong>240 pixels\/inch<\/strong>. At the top of the dialog box is an option for giving the new document a name. Normally, I don't bother naming documents until I go to save them later, but to make things easier for this tutorial, name your document \"Dancing In The Stars\" (or something similar). Click OK when you're done to exit out of the dialog box. Your new document will appear on the screen:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/photoshop-new-document.gif\" alt=\"The New Document dialog box in Photoshop.\" width=\"598\" height=\"341\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The New Document dialog box.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 2: Fill The New Document With Black<\/h3>\n<p>Press the letter <strong>D<\/strong> on your keyboard to quickly reset Photoshop's <strong>Foreground and Background colors<\/strong> to their defaults, if necessary, which sets your Foreground color to <strong>black<\/strong>. Then press <strong>Alt+Backspace<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Option+Delete<\/strong> (Mac) to  fill the new document with the current Foreground color (black):<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/fill-with-black.gif\" alt=\"The new document is now filled with black.\" width=\"354\" height=\"450\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The document after filling it with black.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 3: Add Noise<\/h3>\n<p>Let's create some stars. Go up to the <strong>Filter<\/strong> menu, choose <strong>Noise<\/strong>, then choose <strong>Add Noise<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/filter-noise-add-noise.gif\" alt=\"Selecting the Add Noise filter in Photoshop.\" width=\"396\" height=\"145\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Go to Filter &gt; Noise &gt; Add Noise.<\/div>\n<p>When the Add Noise dialog box appears, increase the <strong>Amount<\/strong> to around <strong>120%<\/strong> or so by dragging the slider towards the right. Make sure the <strong>Gaussian<\/strong> and <strong>Monochromatic<\/strong> options are selected at the bottom of the dialog box:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/add-noise-dialog-box.gif\" alt=\"The Add Noise filter dialog box in Photoshop.\" width=\"363\" height=\"445\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The Add Noise filter's dialog box.<\/div>\n<p>Click OK when you're done to exit out of it. Your document should now be filled with lots of noise:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/document-noise.gif\" alt=\"The Photoshop document is filled with noise.\" width=\"354\" height=\"450\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The document after applying the Add Noise filter.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 4: Apply The Gaussian Blur Filter<\/h3>\n<p>Go back up to the <strong>Filter<\/strong> menu and this time choose <strong>Blur<\/strong>, then choose <strong>Gaussian Blur<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/filter-blur-gaussian-blur.gif\" alt=\"Selecting the Gaussian Blur filter in Photoshop.\" width=\"374\" height=\"190\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Go to Filter &gt; Blur &gt; Gaussian Blur.<\/div>\n<p>When the Gaussian Blur dialog box appears, enter a <strong>Radius<\/strong> value of about <strong>0.3 pixels<\/strong>, just enough to clump some of the noise together. Click OK when you're done to exit out of the dialog box:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/photoshop-gaussian-blur.gif\" alt=\"Photoshop Gaussian Blur filter.\" width=\"343\" height=\"342\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The Gaussian Blur dialog box.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 5: Apply A Levels Image Adjustment<\/h3>\n<p>Go up to the <strong>Image<\/strong> menu, choose <strong>Adjustments<\/strong>, and then choose <strong>Levels<\/strong>, or press <strong>Ctrl+L<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Command+L<\/strong> (Mac) to access Levels with the keyboard shortcut:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/image-adjustments-levels.gif\" alt=\"Selecting a Levels image adjustment in Photoshop.\" width=\"428\" height=\"186\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Go to Image &gt; Adjustments &gt; Levels.<\/div>\n<p>Directly below the <strong><a href=\"\/photo-editing\/histogram\/\">histogram<\/a><\/strong> (the area that looks like a black mountain) in the Levels dialog box are three small sliders - a black one on the far left, a white one on the far right and a gray one in the middle. Click on the <strong>black slider<\/strong> and drag it towards the right. As you drag the slider, you'll see more and more of the white noise disappearing in the document. The remaining white specks become our stars. Drag the black slider as far to the right as needed until you're happy with the number of stars in the image:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/photoshop-levels.gif\" alt=\"Dragging the black slider in the Levels options in the Adjustments Panel in Photoshop CS5.\" width=\"421\" height=\"379\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Drag the black slider towards the right to reduce noise and create the stars.<\/div>\n<p>To brighten the stars, click on the <strong>white slider<\/strong> and drag it a short distance towards the left. You may need to go back and forth between the black and white sliders to fine-tune the results:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/levels-white-slider.gif\" alt=\"Dragging the white slider in the Levels options in the Adjustments Panel in Photoshop CS5.\" width=\"420\" height=\"379\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Drag the white slider towards the left to brighten the stars.<\/div>\n<p>Click OK when you're done to close out of the Levels dialog box.  The stars in your document should now look something like this:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/photoshop-stars.gif\" alt=\"Stars added to the image in Photoshop.\" width=\"356\" height=\"450\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The stars have been added to the document.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 6: Add A New Layer<\/h3>\n<p>Add a new blank layer to the document by clicking on the <strong>New Layer<\/strong> icon at the bottom of the Layers panel:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/photoshop-new-layer.gif\" alt=\"The New Layer icon in the Layers panel in Photoshop.\" width=\"314\" height=\"238\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The New Layer icon.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 7: Select The Gradient Tool<\/h3>\n<p>Select Photoshop's <strong>Gradient Tool<\/strong> from the Tools panel:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/photoshop-gradient-tool.gif\" alt=\"Photoshop Gradient Tool.\" width=\"66\" height=\"147\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The Gradient Tool.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 8: Draw A White To Black Radial Gradient<\/h3>\n<p>Back in Step 2, we reset Photoshop's Foreground and Background colors to their defaults by pressing the letter D on the keyboard, which made the Foreground color black (and the Background color white). This time, press the letter <strong>X<\/strong> on your keyboard to swap the colors, making the Foreground color white and the Background color black. You can see what the colors are currently set to by looking at the Foreground and Background color swatches at the bottom of the Tools panel:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/foreground-background-colors.gif\" alt=\"Photoshop Foreground and Background color swatches.\" width=\"79\" height=\"138\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The current Foreground color (left swatch) and Background color (right swatch).<\/div>\n<p>The reason we did this is because we need to choose a white to black gradient and by default, Photoshop selects a gradient based on the current Foreground and Background colors, which means we should now have a white to black gradient already chosen for us. You can see the current gradient colors by looking at the <strong>gradient preview bar<\/strong> in the Options Bar:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/gradient-options-bar.gif\" alt=\"The gradient preview in the Options Bar in Photoshop.\" width=\"561\" height=\"64\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">By default, a white to black gradient should be showing in the preview bar.<\/div>\n<p>If a different gradient is currently selected, simply click on the gradient preview bar, which opens Photoshop's <strong>Gradient Editor<\/strong>, then click on the <strong>Foreground to Background<\/strong> gradient's thumbnail (top left) to select it. Click OK when you're done to exit out of the Gradient Editor:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/photoshop-gradient-editor.gif\" alt=\"Photoshop Gradient Editor.\" width=\"461\" height=\"236\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Click on the Foreground to Background gradient's thumbnail to select it if needed.<\/div>\n<p>Finally, click on the <strong>Radial<\/strong> gradient icon in the Options Bar:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/photoshop-radial-gradient.gif\" alt=\"Photoshop radial gradient icon.\" width=\"561\" height=\"72\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Select the Radial option.<\/div>\n<p>With a white to black radial gradient now selected, click roughly halfway between the middle and the bottom of the document to set a starting point for the gradient. Then, with your mouse button still held down, drag straight up to the very top:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/drag-radial-gradient.gif\" alt=\"Drawing a radial gradient in Photoshop.\" width=\"356\" height=\"450\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Click and drag out the transition area for the gradient.<\/div>\n<p>Release your mouse button at the top of the document and Photoshop draws a large radial gradient, with white in the center (where you initially clicked) and gradually fading to black as it moves towards the outer edges:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/gradient-added.jpg\" alt=\"Photoshop radial gradient.\" width=\"356\" height=\"450\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Photoshop draws the gradient when you release your mouse button.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 9: Resize The Gradient With Free Transform<\/h3>\n<p>Go up to the <strong>Edit<\/strong> menu at the top of the screen and choose <strong>Free Transform<\/strong>, or press <strong>Ctrl+T<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Command+T<\/strong> (Mac) to access Free Transform with the keyboard shortcut:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/photoshop-free-transform.gif\" alt=\"Photoshop Free Transform command.\" width=\"263\" height=\"142\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Go to Edit &gt; Free Transform.<\/div>\n<p>This places the Free Transform box and handles around the gradient. Click on the handle (the little square) in the <strong>top center<\/strong> and drag it straight down until the gradient covers only the bottom third or so of the document. Press <strong>Enter<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Return<\/strong> (Mac) when you're done to accept the transformation and exit out of Free Transform:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/resize-gradient.jpg\" alt=\"Reshaping the gradient with Free Transform in Photoshop.\" width=\"356\" height=\"450\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Drag the top center handle down until the gradient is roughly a third of its original size.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 10: Change The Layer Blend Mode To Screen<\/h3>\n<p>To blend the gradient in with the stars behind it so it looks  like light shining from a distant galaxy, change the <strong><a href=\"\/photo-editing\/layer-blend-modes\/\">blend mode<\/a><\/strong> of the gradient's layer from Normal to <strong>Screen<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/layer-blend-mode.gif\" alt=\"The Screen layer blend mode in Photoshop.\" width=\"343\" height=\"291\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Change the blend mode to Screen.<\/div>\n<p>With the blend mode set to Screen, the stars are now visible through the darker outer edges of the gradient:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/galaxy-light.jpg\" alt=\"The stars now shine through the galaxy light.\" width=\"356\" height=\"450\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The Screen blend mode makes any areas of solid black on the layer disappear.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 11: Open The Photo Of The Dancing Couple<\/h3>\n<p>We're ready to add our dancing couple into the stars. Open your photo that contains the couple. Here's the photo I'll be using. The photo will open in a separate document window:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/couple-dancing.jpg\" alt=\"A wedding couple dancing. Image licensed by Photoshop Essentials.com.\" width=\"333\" height=\"450\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The happy couple.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 12: Select The Couple<\/h3>\n<p>Use the Photoshop selection tool of your choice (<strong><a href=\"\/basics\/selections\/lasso-tool\/\">Lasso Tool<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"\/basics\/selections\/magnetic-lasso-tool\/\">Magnetic Lasso Tool<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"\/basics\/pen-tool-selections\/\">Pen Tool<\/a><\/strong>, etc) to select just the couple in the photo. When you're done, you should see a selection outline around them:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/couple-selected.jpg\" alt=\"Selecting the wedding couple in the photo.\" width=\"334\" height=\"450\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Select the couple.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 13: Copy The Selection To A New Layer<\/h3>\n<p>Press <strong>Ctrl+J<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Command+J<\/strong> (Mac) to quickly copy the couple to their own layer in the Layers panel:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/couple-layer.gif\" alt=\"Copying the wedding couple to a new layer.\" width=\"314\" height=\"291\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The couple now have their own layer all to themselves.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 14: Move The Layer To The Stars Document<\/h3>\n<p>With the couple's layer selected in the Layers panel, go up to the <strong>Layer<\/strong> menu and choose <strong>Duplicate Layer<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/layer-duplicate-layer.gif\" alt=\"Photoshop Duplicate Layer command.\" width=\"254\" height=\"175\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Go to Layer &gt; Duplicate Layer.<\/div>\n<p>We're going to copy this layer over to our stars document. When the Duplicate Layer dialog box appears, name the layer <strong>Couple<\/strong> at the top of the dialog box (where it says <strong>Duplicate Layer 1 As<\/strong>). Then choose your &quot;Dancing In The Stars&quot; document as the <strong>Destination<\/strong> for the layer. Click OK when you're done to close out of the dialog box:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/duplicate-layer.gif\" alt=\"Photoshop Duplicate Layer command.\" width=\"508\" height=\"190\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Name the duplicate layer &quot;Couple&quot; and set your stars document as the destination.<\/div>\n<p>Switch back over to the stars document (you can close out of the photo's document at this point), where we find the couple now dancing in front of the stars (we'll move them into position in a moment):<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/couple-added.jpg\" alt=\"The wedding couple has been added to the stars document. Image licensed byPhotoshop Essentials.com.\" width=\"356\" height=\"450\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The couple has been added to the document.<\/div>\n<p>If we look in the Layers panel, we see that the couple now sits on their own layer named \"Couple\" above the other two layers:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/layer-moved.gif\" alt=\"The layer has been moved to the new document.\" width=\"328\" height=\"378\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Photoshop placed the \"Couple\" layer above the original two layers.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 15: Move And Resize The Couple With Free Transform<\/h3>\n<p>Press <strong>Ctrl+T<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Command+T<\/strong> (Mac) to quickly bring up the <strong>Free Transform<\/strong> box and handles around the couple so we can resize them if needed and move them into position. To resize the couple, hold down your <strong>Shift<\/strong> key and drag any of the four <strong>corner handles<\/strong>. Keeping the Shift key held down as you drag constrains the aspect ratio of the couple so you don't distort the overall shape of them. To move them into position, click anywhere inside the Free Transform bounding box and drag them around inside the document with your mouse. Move them so it looks like they're standing directly on the center of the &quot;galaxy&quot;. Press <strong>Enter<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Return<\/strong> (Mac) when you're done to accept the changes and exit out of Free Transform:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/transform-couple.jpg\" alt=\"Resizing and moving the wedding couple with Free Transform.\" width=\"356\" height=\"450\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Move the couple directly above the center of the gradient.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 16: Add A Layer Mask<\/h3>\n<p>Click on the <strong>Layer Mask<\/strong> icon at the bottom of the Layers panel to add a layer mask to the \"Couple\" layer:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/add-layer-mask.gif\" alt=\"Photoshop Add Layer Mask icon.\" width=\"328\" height=\"385\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Click the Layer Mask icon.<\/div>\n<p>A <strong>layer mask thumbnail<\/strong> appears to the right of the main preview thumbnail:<\/p>\n<p>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/layer-mask-thumbnail.gif\" alt=\"Photoshop layer mask thumbnail.\" width=\"328\" height=\"378\" \/>s<\/p>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The layer mask thumbnail.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 17: Draw A Linear Gradient On The Layer Mask<\/h3>\n<p>We're going to use the layer mask to blend the lower part of the couple into the gradient, as if they're being engulfed by the light from the galaxy. Select the <strong>Gradient Tool<\/strong> once again from the Tools panel. Then, up in the Options Bar, click on the <strong>Linear<\/strong> gradient icon:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/linear-gradient.gif\" alt=\"The linear gradient icon in the Options Bar in Photoshop.\" width=\"560\" height=\"66\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Click on the Linear gradient option.<\/div>\n<p>To blend the couple into the gradient, I'll click somewhere just below their knee level to set a starting point for the gradient, and with my mouse button still held down, I'll drag  down to just above the groom's feet.  Hold your <strong>Shift<\/strong> key as you drag, which will limit the direction you can drag in, making it easier to drag straight down:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/drag-linear-gradient.jpg\" alt=\"Drawing a linear gradient on the layer mask.\" width=\"356\" height=\"450\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Dragging a short vertical gradient on the layer mask.<\/div>\n<p>Since we drew the gradient on the layer mask, not the layer itself, when you release your mouse button, the couple blends nicely into the \"galaxy\" below them:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/couple-blended.jpg\" alt=\"The couple is now blended into the galaxy.\" width=\"356\" height=\"450\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The image after blending the couple into the gradient.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 18: Colorize The Image With A Hue\/Saturation Adjustment Layer<\/h3>\n<p>Let's give the galaxy some color. Click on the <strong>New Adjustment Layer<\/strong> icon at the bottom of the Layers panel:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/new-adjustment-layer-icon.gif\" alt=\"Photoshop New Adjustment Layer icon.\" width=\"328\" height=\"388\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The New Adjustment Layer icon.<\/div>\n<p>Select <strong>Hue\/Saturation<\/strong> from the list of adjustment layers that appears:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/hue-saturation.gif\" alt=\"Selecting a Hue\/Saturation adjustment layer.\" width=\"176\" height=\"161\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Choose Hue\/Saturation.<\/div>\n<p>If you're using Photoshop CS5 as I am here, the options for Hue\/Saturation will appear in the <strong>Adjustments Panel<\/strong>, new in CS5. In Photoshop CS4 and earlier, the Hue\/Saturation dialog box will pop open. I'm going to give my galaxy a nice blue color. First, select the <strong>Colorize<\/strong> option by clicking inside its checkbox. With Colorize selected, if you want to use the same color I'm using, set the <strong>Hue<\/strong> value to <strong>240<\/strong> and increase the <strong>Saturation<\/strong> to <strong>50%<\/strong> (if you want to try a different color, simply drag the Hue slider left or right):<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/hue-saturation-options.gif\" alt=\"The Hue\/Saturation options in Photoshop.\" width=\"318\" height=\"315\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The Hue\/Saturation options.<\/div>\n<p>If you're using Photoshop CS4 or earlier, click OK when you're done to exit out of the dialog box. There's no need to close out of the Adjustments Panel in CS5. The color will look too intense for the moment, but we'll fix that next:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/image-colorized.jpg\" alt=\"The image has been colorized in Photoshop.\" width=\"356\" height=\"450\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The color is currently too intense.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 19: Change The Blend Mode To Color And Lower The Opacity<\/h3>\n<p>Change the <strong>blend mode<\/strong> of the Hue\/Saturation adjustment layer from Normal to <strong>Color<\/strong> so that only the colors in the image are affected, not the brightness values. Then, to reduce the intensity of the color,  lower the <strong>Opacity<\/strong> of the Hue\/Saturation adjustment layer to around <strong>60%<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/color-opacity.gif\" alt=\"The blend mode and opacity options in the Layers panel.\" width=\"339\" height=\"377\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Change the blend mode to Color and lower the opacity.<\/div>\n<p>The colorizing effect is now much more subtle. Still one last thing left to do:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/image-color-opacity.jpg\" alt=\"The image after lowering the opacity.\" width=\"356\" height=\"450\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The image after reducing the color.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 20: Draw A Linear Gradient On The Hue\/Saturation Layer Mask<\/h3>\n<p>To finish things off, let's make it look more like the  light from the galaxy is reflecting off the couple rather than having the entire image colorized in blue (or whichever color you chose). This will bring back the original skin tone in their faces. With the Gradient Tool still selected, I'll click around the bride's waist to set the starting point for my gradient and, with my mouse button still held down, I'll drag up to her shoulder, holding my <strong>Shift<\/strong> key down as well to make it easier to drag straight up:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/dancing-stars\/drag-gradient-2.jpg\" alt=\"Dragging another linear gradient.\" width=\"492\" height=\"400\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Make sure you end your transition area before reaching the couple's faces.<\/div>\n<p>Once again, since we drew the gradient on a layer mask (the Hue\/Saturation adjustment layer's mask, which was already selected for us by Photoshop), we don't actually see the gradient in the document.
