Depending on the subject and the background, making that selection can feel like an impossible task.<\/p>\n<p>But thanks to an incredible new upgrade in the latest Photoshop beta, the days of making those impossible selections ourselves may soon be in the past.<\/p>\n<p>The upgrade is to the <strong>Select Subject<\/strong> and <strong>Remove Background<\/strong> commands. They've both been around in Photoshop for years but they were never all that impressive. That is, until now.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly Adobe has figured something out because in the latest Photoshop beta, those  unimpressive commands are now two of Photoshop's most amazing features, capable of selecting virtually any complex subject with just a single click!<\/p>\n<p>In this tutorial, I\u2019ll show you how to use Select Subject and Remove Background to get the best results, and we\u2019ll look at how much better they are in the latest Photoshop beta compared to the official Photoshop release. We need to tell Photoshop to run Select Subject and Remove Background on the cloud rather than on your computer, because this new upgrade is only available on the cloud. We do that in <a href=\"\/basics\/reset-photoshop-preferences\/\" title=\"How to reset the Photoshop Preferences\">Photoshop\u2019s Preferences<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In Photoshop, on a Windows PC, go up to the <strong>Edit<\/strong> menu in the Menu Bar and choose <strong>Preferences<\/strong>. On a Mac, go up to the <strong>Photoshop<\/strong> menu and choose <strong>Settings<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>Then from there, choose <strong>Image Processing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/basics\/2025\/remove-background-photoshop-beta\/image-processing-preferences.png\" alt=\"Opening the Image Processing preferences in Photoshop\" width=\"494\" height=\"298\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Opening the Image Processing preferences.<\/div>\n<p>In the dialog box, look for the option that says <strong>Select Subject and Remove Background<\/strong> and make sure it\u2019s set to <strong>Cloud<\/strong>, not Device. The reason is that a bike would normally be too challenging for Photoshop to select automatically. They both create the exact same selection of your subject.<\/p>\n<p>The only difference is that Select Subject creates the selection outline and that\u2019s it, so you can decide what you want to do with it. <\/p>\n<p>Remove Background, on the other hand, creates the same selection of your subject but then goes a step further and removes the background. It does that by turning the selection into a layer mask. We\u2019ll look at how that works in a moment.<\/p>\n<h3>Using Select Subject<\/h3>\n<p>In the task bar, I\u2019ll start by clicking <strong>Select Subject<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/basics\/2025\/remove-background-photoshop-beta\/click-select-subject.png\" alt=\"Clicking Select Subject in the task bar.\" width=\"809\" height=\"99\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Clicking Select Subject in the task bar.<\/div>\n<p>A progress bar appears telling us that the selection is being processed on the cloud.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/basics\/2025\/remove-background-photoshop-beta\/progress-bar.png\" alt=\"The progress bar.\" width=\"517\" height=\"164\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The progress bar.<\/div>\n<p>Then after a few seconds, we get our selection outline. And right away, things are looking much better than they ever did before.<\/p>\n<p>Usually it\u2019s hard to tell what\u2019s actually selected and what\u2019s not just by looking at the <q>marching ants<\/q> selection outline. The background is still there. And that would be what you want if you just want to make an edit to your subject. Somehow it was able to recognize every detail of that bike, or at least 99 percent of it, while completely removing the background. <\/p>\n<p>Again we\u2019re going to look at what we get from the official Photoshop release in a moment.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/basics\/2025\/remove-background-photoshop-beta\/remove-background-bike.jpg\" alt=\"The Remove Background result in the Photoshop beta.\" width=\"809\" height=\"518\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The Remove Background result in the Photoshop beta.<\/div>\n<h3>How Remove Background works<\/h3>\n<p>I mentioned that Photoshop removes the background by turning the selection outline into a <a href=\"\/basics\/understanding-photoshop-layer-masks\/\" title=\"Learn more about layer masks in Photoshop\">layer mask<\/a>, and we can see that in the <a href=\"\/basics\/layers\/layers-panel\/\" title=\"Learn more about the Layers panel in Photoshop\">Layers panel<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>We now have a <strong>layer mask thumbnail<\/strong> on the image layer showing, very clearly, the bike filled with white. And white on a layer mask is where the content of the layer is still visible. <\/p>\n<p>The rest of the mask around the bike is filled with black, and black on a mask is where the content is hidden. So the background is actually still there. It\u2019s just hidden from view.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/basics\/2025\/remove-background-photoshop-beta\/layer-mask-thumbnail.png\" alt=\"The layer mask thumbnail in the Layers panel.\" width=\"295\" height=\"202\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The layer mask thumbnail in the Layers panel.<\/div>\n<p>You can turn the layer mask off to bring the entire image back by holding the <strong>Shift<\/strong> key on your keyboard and clicking the <strong>layer mask thumbnail<\/strong>. A red X appears in the mask thumbnail telling you that the mask is turned off, and the background reappears.<\/p>\n<p>To turn the layer mask back on and hide the background, again hold Shift on your keyboard and click the layer mask thumbnail.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/basics\/2025\/remove-background-photoshop-beta\/layer-mask-disabled.png\" alt=\"Hold Shift and click the mask thumbnail to toggle the mask on and off.\" width=\"295\" height=\"142\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Hold Shift and click the mask thumbnail to toggle the mask on and off.<\/div>\n<h3>How to view the layer mask<\/h3>\n<p>To really see how well Photoshop selected your subject, you can view the layer mask in the document by holding the <strong>Alt<\/strong> key (Windows) or the <strong>Option<\/strong> key (Mac) on your keyboard and clicking the <strong>layer mask thumbnail <\/strong>in the Layers panel.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/basics\/2025\/remove-background-photoshop-beta\/hold-alt-option-click-layer-mask.png\" alt=\"Hold Alt (Win) \/ Option (Mac) and click the mask thumbnail.\" width=\"295\" height=\"203\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Hold Alt (Win) \/ Option (Mac) and click the mask thumbnail.<\/div>\n<p>With the mask visible, we can clearly see the detail in the selection. <\/p>\n<p>Is it perfect? Not quite. There are a few little spots here and there that need to be touched up. But how do those results compare to the official Photoshop release?<\/p>\n<p>Well, here\u2019s the result I got using Remove Background in Photoshop (the official version). Remember that it does not yet have the same upgrade.<\/p>\n<p>In the official release, the selection of the bike looks terrible. Most of the spokes in the wheels are missing. But of course, you may never have a need to select a bike, so let\u2019s try something more practical.<\/p>\n<p>In this image, I wanted to see if the Photoshop beta was better than the official Photoshop release at selecting the young woman's hair.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/basics\/2025\/remove-background-photoshop-beta\/second-image-flyaway-hair.jpg\" alt=\"The layer mask created by the Photoshop beta.\" width=\"809\" height=\"459\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The layer mask created by the Photoshop beta.<\/div>\n<p>In both versions of Photoshop, I used Remove Background to remove the young woman from her surroundings. Whatever magic Adobe\u2019s Photoshop team is using has suddenly turned Select Subject and Remove Background into two of Photoshop\u2019s most impressive features. <\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s just hope that Adobe does not start charging credits to use them when the upgrade makes its way into the official Photoshop release, most likely later this year.
