It\u2019s called <strong>Distraction Removal<\/strong> in Camera Raw but it does the same thing, although the way we use it is a bit different, as we\u2019ll see in a moment.<\/p>\n<p>The benefit with using Camera Raw over Photoshop\u2019s <a href=\"\/photo-editing\/using-generative-ai-with-the-remove-tool-in-photoshop\/\" title=\"Learn more\">Remove Tool<\/a> is that our Camera Raw edits are non-destructive. And Camera Raw is just a better way to edit your images because it gives you all of the same intuitive editing features as Adobe Lightroom and Lightroom Classic.<\/p>\n<p>For this tutorial, we\u2019ll be using the <a href=\"\/photo-editing\/the-smart-way-to-use-photoshops-camera-raw-filter\/\" title=\"Learn more\">Camera Raw Filter<\/a> which is available directly in Photoshop. But everything is the same if you\u2019re using the standalone Camera Raw plugin.<\/p>\n<h3>Which Photoshop version do I need?<\/h3>\n<p>You'll need <a href=\"https:\/\/adobe.prf.hn\/click\/camref:1100lrdjJ\/destination:https%3A\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/photoshop.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Learn more on the Adobe website\" rel=\"noopener\">Photoshop 2025<\/a> and Camera Raw 17.2 or higher to use Distraction Removal with Camera Raw. My main subject is in the foreground and there are lots of distracting people in the background. It\u2019s only found in Camera Raw. Currently Distraction Removal can remove reflections and people. There are a few people way off in the distance who were missed but that\u2019s okay. I can always remove them manually later if needed.<\/p>\n<p>One limitation of Distraction Removal in Camera Raw is that there is currently no way to add to the selection. The pin and the highlight will disappear.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/2025\/camera-raw-remove-people\/pin-deleted.jpg\" alt=\"Press Delete to remove the pin and the highlight.\" width=\"809\" height=\"542\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Press Delete to remove the pin and the highlight.<\/div>\n<p>You can then click the <strong>Remove<\/strong> button and that person (or group) will not be removed from the photo.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/2025\/camera-raw-remove-people\/everyone-else-removed.jpg\" alt=\"The deselected person was not removed.\" width=\"809\" height=\"458\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The deselected person was not removed.<\/div>\n<h3>How to remove someone from the photo manually<\/h3>\n<p>What if Distraction Removal missed someone who should have been removed? <\/p>\n<p>In that case, you can remove them manually using Camera Raw\u2019s <strong>Remove Tool<\/strong> which also uses generative AI, just like the <a href=\"\/photo-editing\/using-generative-ai-with-the-remove-tool-in-photoshop\/\" title=\"Learn more\">Remove Tool in Photoshop<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Still in the Remove tab of Camera Raw, select the Remove Tool and make sure Use Generative AI is selected.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/2025\/camera-raw-remove-people\/choose-remove-tool.jpg\" alt=\"Selecting the Remove Tool and Use Generative AI in Camera Raw\" width=\"399\" height=\"272\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Selecting the Remove Tool and Use Generative AI.<\/div>\n<p>Then simply paint over the person you want to remove to highlight them. Turn it off to bring the people back.
