The main upgrade, which I covered in a previous tutorial, is that <a href=\"\/photo-editing\/using-generative-ai-with-the-remove-tool-in-photoshop-beta\/\" title=\"Learn how to use generative AI with the Remove Tool\">the Remove Tool now uses generative AI<\/a>, powered by Adobe Firefly, to remove unwanted elements from your photos and replace them with new AI-generated content.<\/p>\n<p>But along with generative AI, the Remove Tool also has a new <strong>Find Distractions<\/strong> option. <\/p>\n<p>Find Distractions can be used to instantly remove two specific kinds of distractions from your photos. One kind (the one we\u2019ll look at in this tutorial) is <strong>unwanted people<\/strong> in the background. Photoshop will detect your main subject and keep them safe while removing unwanted strangers and annoying photo bombers from the image.<\/p>\n<p>The Remove Tool can also now <a href=\"\/photo-editing\/remove-wires-and-cables-from-photos-instantly-in-photoshop-2025\/\" title=\"View tutorial\">instantly remove wires and cables<\/a>. With my image, we have the woman in the center as the main subject, along with a distracting person behind her and another distracting person on either side. <\/p>\n<p>As we\u2019ll see, Find Distractions will not remove our main subject. It will only detect and remove the distractions.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/2024\/find-distractions-people\/open-original-image.jpg\" alt=\"Opening the image in Photoshop.\" width=\"809\" height=\"459\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Opening the image in Photoshop.<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"sub\">Step 2: Add a new blank layer above your image<\/h2>\n<p>To keep the original image safe and work non-destructively, add a new blank layer above your image. Then choose <strong>People<\/strong> from the menu.<\/p>\n<p>Notice that above <q>People<\/q>, it says <q>Editable<\/q>. That\u2019s because after the Remove Tool selects the unwanted people, Photoshop will give us a chance to edit the selection before accepting it.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/2024\/find-distractions-people\/find-distractions-people.png\" alt=\"The Find Distractions People option for the Remove Tool\" width=\"284\" height=\"251\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Clicking Find distractions and choosing People.<\/div>\n<p>Photoshop takes a moment to analyze the image looking for people to remove. Then it highlights those people in magenta. <\/p>\n<p>Notice that it did not select the main subject. Wth my image, only the person behind the woman, as well as the person on either side of her, were highlighted.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/2024\/find-distractions-people\/distracting-people-detected-and-selected.jpg\" alt=\"The distracting people in the photo are highlighted in magenta.\" width=\"809\" height=\"458\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The distracting people in the photo are highlighted in magenta.<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"sub\">Step 7: Inspect and edit the selection if needed<\/h2>\n<p>Before removing the people, take a moment to inspect the selection(s) looking for areas that Photoshop missed.<\/p>\n<p>For example, I can see that Photoshop missed quite a few spots along the edges of the woman\u2019s jacket and the strap for her backpack. I know they were missed because they are not highlighted in magenta.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/2024\/find-distractions-people\/missed-areas.jpg\" alt=\"Photoshop missed some areas along the edges.\" width=\"609\" height=\"609\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Photoshop missed some areas along the edges.<\/div>\n<p>To add those missing areas to the selection, all I need to do is paint with the Remove Tool along those edges. You can adjust the size of the Remove Tool\u2019s brush from your keyboard using the <strong>left and right bracket keys<\/strong> ( <strong>[<\/strong> and <strong>]<\/strong> ).<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no need to be overly precise when painting with the Remove Tool. You\u2019ll see a progress bar while you wait.<\/p>\n<p>When it\u2019s done, the selected people are instantly removed and replaced with new image detail generated by Adobe Firefly.
