You then enter a description of the new background as a prompt, click Generate, and your new background appears. But before we do, let\u2019s make sure we get the best selection possible.<\/p>\n<p>Open Photoshop\u2019s Preferences.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"f1\">\n<li>Windows: Go to Edit &gt; Preferences &gt; Image Processing<\/li>\n<li>Mac: Go to Photoshop &gt; Settings &gt; Image Processing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Then in the Preferences dialog box, make sure that <strong>Select Subject and Remove Background<\/strong> is set to <strong>Cloud<\/strong>, not Device. This will <a href=\"\/basics\/select-subjects-powerful-new-cloud-option-in-photoshop-2022\/\" title=\"Learn more\">run Remove Background on Adobe\u2019s servers<\/a>, giving you a more detailed selection. If you\u2019re not seeing the task bar, go up to the Window menu and choose Contextual Task Bar near the bottom of the list.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/2024\/generate-background\/remove-background-button.png\" alt=\"Clicking Remove Background in Photoshop\" width=\"455\" height=\"76\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Clicking Remove Background.<\/div>\n<p>Photoshop takes a few seconds to analyze the image, finds your main subject and removes the background.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/2024\/generate-background\/photo-background-removed.jpg\" alt=\"The background has been removed from the photo using Remove Background\" width=\"809\" height=\"542\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The background has been removed from the photo.<\/div>\n<p>It looks like the background was deleted but it\u2019s actually just hidden using a <a href=\"\/basics\/understanding-photoshop-layer-masks\/\" title=\"Learn more about Photoshop layer masks\">layer mask<\/a>. We can see the layer mask thumbnail in the <a href=\"\/basics\/layers\/layers-panel\/\" title=\"Learn more about the Photoshop Layers panel\">Layers panel<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The white area on the mask is our subject and the black area is the background. This means we\u2019re <a href=\"\/photo-editing\/photoshop-image-adjustments-vs-adjustment-layers\/\" title=\"Learn more about Photoshop adjustment layers\">editing the image non-destructively<\/a> which is the best way to work.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/2024\/generate-background\/layer-mask.png\" alt=\"Photoshop hides the background using a layer mask\" width=\"295\" height=\"200\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Photoshop hides the background using a layer mask.<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"sub\">Step 4: Click the Generate Background button<\/h2>\n<p>Back in the Contextual Task Bar, click the <strong>Generate Background<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/2024\/generate-background\/photoshop-generate-background-button.png\" alt=\"Clicking the Generate Background button in Photoshop.\" width=\"587\" height=\"74\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Clicking Generate Background.<\/div>\n<p>Then in the prompt box, enter a description of what you want the background to look like. The description can be as simple as <q>a beach<\/q> or <q>a forest<\/q>. But keep in mind that <a href=\"\/photo-effects\/using-visual-intensity-in-adobe-firefly-for-more-detailed-images\/\" title=\"Learn more\">Adobe Firefly<\/a> needs to figure out what you want from your prompt, so you\u2019ll get better results by being more descriptive. <\/p>\n<p>For my prompt, I\u2019ll enter <q>a beach at sunrise with soft golden light reflecting on the water, gentle waves, a clear sky<\/q>.<\/p>\n<p>Then click the <strong>Generate<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/2024\/generate-background\/prompt-generate-button.png\" alt=\"Entering a description for the new background and clicking Generate\" width=\"550\" height=\"74\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Enter a description for the new background and click Generate.<\/div>\n<p>After a few seconds, the new background appears. You\u2019ll get three initial backgrounds to choose from. <\/p>\n<p>This one is my favorite of the three. You can cycle through them by clicking the <strong>left and right arrows<\/strong> in the Contextual Task Bar.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/2024\/generate-background\/variation-arrows-task-bar.png\" alt=\"Click the arrows to cycle through the three results\" width=\"404\" height=\"77\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Click the arrows to cycle through the three results.<\/div>\n<p>Another way to cycle through the backgrounds is by clicking the <strong>thumbnails<\/strong> in the <a href=\"\/basics\/using-the-enhanced-properties-panel-in-photoshop\/\" title=\"Learn more about the Photoshop Properties panel\">Properties panel<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t like any of the initial backgrounds (it happens a lot), just click the Generate button to generate three more.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/2024\/generate-background\/background-variations-properties-panel.png\" alt=\"Clicking the thumbnails to choose the best background.\" width=\"295\" height=\"389\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Clicking the thumbnails to choose the best result.<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"sub\">Step 6: Edit your prompt and try again<\/h2>\n<p>If Adobe Firefly isn\u2019t generating the background you want no matter how many times you try, you can edit your prompt or try a completely different prompt.<\/p>\n<p>In the Properties panel, I\u2019ll change the word <q>beach<\/q> in my prompt to <q>lake<\/q> and  click Generate.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/2024\/generate-background\/edit-prompt.png\" alt=\"Editing the Generate Background prompt and clicking Generate.\" width=\"295\" height=\"276\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Editing the prompt and clicking Generate.<\/div>\n<p>This time Firefly added a lake in the background and placed the woman on a wooden dock. <\/p>\n<p>Again the lighting and the colors in the new background are nicely matched to my subject. <\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/2024\/generate-background\/generate-background-result-2.jpg\" alt=\"The Generate Background result after editing the prompt\" width=\"809\" height=\"542\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The new generated background after editing the prompt.<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"sub\">Step 7: Try Generate Similar<\/h2>\n<p>Another new AI feature in Photoshop, and one that can often work great with Generate Background, is <strong>Generate Similar<\/strong>. If you get a background you like but it\u2019s not quite what you were looking for, Generate Similar lets you use it as the <a href=\"\/photo-effects\/using-structure-reference-and-style-reference-in-adobe-firefly\/\" title=\"Using Structure Reference and Style Reference in Adobe Firefly\">reference image<\/a> so you can have Adobe Firefly generate more backgrounds that are similar to it.<\/p>\n<p>In the Properties panel, hover your cursor over the thumbnail of the background you like. The result below  was the best I could do, but the dock is too small, the trees in the background look weird and there\u2019s an odd halo around the woman\u2019s hair.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes Generate Similar works great and sometimes it doesn\u2019t, but it\u2019s worth a try.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/2024\/generate-background\/generate-similar-result.jpg\" alt=\"The Generate Similar result.\" width=\"809\" height=\"542\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The Generate Similar result.<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"sub\">Step 8: Use Enhance Detail to upscale the background<\/h2>\n<p>Finally, yet another new AI feature in Photoshop is <strong>Enhance Detail<\/strong>. It uses Photoshop\u2019s AI-powered <a href=\"\/photo-editing\/upscale-photos-to-4x-with-super-resolution-in-adobe-camera-raw\/\" title=\"Learn more about using Super Resolution to upscale images\">Super Resolution<\/a> feature to effectively double the resolution of the AI content. It\u2019s not <em>really<\/em> doubling the resolution but the effect is very similar.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest problem with AI generated content is that its resolution is often lower than the original image. And the larger the area you generate with AI, the more obvious the problem becomes. So you can imagine that generating an entire background with AI would be a worst-case scenario.<\/p>\n<p>Enhance Detail is designed to help with this problem, and it works very well. <\/p>\n<p>To use it, go to the Properties panel and hover your cursor over the thumbnail of the background you want to use. Then click on the <strong>Enhance Detail<\/strong> icon in the upper left corner.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/2024\/generate-background\/enhance-detail-icon.png\" alt=\"Clicking the Enhance Detail icon in the background\u2019s thumbnail.\" width=\"294\" height=\"236\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Clicking the Enhance Detail icon in the background\u2019s thumbnail.<\/div>\n<p>The difference can appear subtle when zoomed out. So I\u2019ll <a href=\"\/basics\/photoshop-zoom\/\" title=\"Learn how to zoom in Photoshop\">zoom in on my image<\/a> to 200 percent. <\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the original background before running Enhance Detail. Notice how soft the edges are around the woman\u2019s hair. <\/p>\n<p>Those edges are not the woman\u2019s original hair. They\u2019re actually part of the background that Photoshop generated, and they look quite soft due to the low resolution.
