But the advantage with Generative Expand is that it\u2019s built directly into the Crop Tool so you can extend the canvas and the image all at once. Release your mouse button and the new space is filled with white (the default Background color).<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/2023\/generative-expand\/extend-canvas-right-side.jpg\" alt=\"Extending the right side of the canvas with the Crop Tool in Photoshop\" width=\"803\" height=\"455\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Extending the right side of the canvas.<\/div>\n<p>To extend the opposite side at the same time, hold the <strong>Alt<\/strong> key on a Windows PC or the <strong>Option<\/strong> key on a Mac as you drag.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/2023\/generative-expand\/extend-canvas-both-sides.jpg\" alt=\"Extending both sides of the canvas at the same time with the Crop Tool\" width=\"803\" height=\"455\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Extending both sides of the canvas at once.<\/div>\n<p>Or to extend the canvas to a specific aspect ratio, either:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"f1\">\n<li>enter a custom ratio into the Width and Height boxes, or<\/li>\n<li>choose a preset from the Aspect Ratio drop down box.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For example, I want to expand my photo into a 4 x 6 landscape image. But instead of using the default Rule of Thirds grid to help with the composition, I like to try the Golden Ratio which can give it a more natural look.<\/p>\n<p>So in the Options Bar, I\u2019ll click the <strong>Grid Overlay<\/strong> icon.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/2023\/generative-expand\/crop-grid-options.png\" alt=\"Opening the Grid Overlap options.\" width=\"368\" height=\"103\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Opening the Grid options.<\/div>\n<p>And I\u2019ll choose <strong>Golden Ratio<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/2023\/generative-expand\/choose-golden-ratio-grid.png\" alt=\"Choosing the Golden Ratio grid overlay for the Crop Tool.\" width=\"305\" height=\"309\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Choosing the Golden Ratio grid overlay.<\/div>\n<p>Then I\u2019ll drag the image over to the right to line up the kitten with the right vertical grid line.<\/p>\n<p>And now that my canvas is added and my subject is in place, I\u2019m ready to expand the image.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/2023\/generative-expand\/reposition-subject-on-canvas.jpg\" alt=\"Repositioning the original photo on the canvas using the Golden Ratio grid overlay.\" width=\"803\" height=\"455\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Repositioning the original photo on the canvas using the Golden Ratio.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 4: Click the Generative Expand button<\/h3>\n<p>Here\u2019s the advantage that Generative Expand has over Generative Fill. <\/p>\n<p>At this point, if we were <a href=\"\/photo-editing\/extend-images-with-generative-fill\/\" title=\"Learn how to extend an image with Generative Fill\">extending the image using Generative Fill<\/a>, we would need to:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"f1\">\n<li>accept the crop to exit the Crop Tool<\/li>\n<li>switch to the Rectangular Marquee Tool<\/li>\n<li>drag a selection outline around the new canvas, and<\/li>\n<li>make sure to include some of the image in the selection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But with Generative Expand, we skip all that because everything is done using the Crop Tool. So same result but fewer steps!<\/p>\n<p>With your crop border still active, click <strong>Generative Expand<\/strong> in the Contextual Task Bar. <\/p>\n<p>Note that if the Fill option in the Options Bar is set to Generative Expand, you can skip to the next step because Generative Expand is already selected.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/2023\/generative-expand\/click-generative-expand.jpg\" alt=\"Clicking Generative Expand in the Contextual Task Bar.\" width=\"596\" height=\"113\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Clicking Generative Expand in the Contextual Task Bar.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 5: Leave the prompt box empty and click Generate<\/h3>\n<p>A <strong>prompt box<\/strong> appears where we can type a description of what we want to fill the new canvas area with, just like we would see if we were using Generative Fill.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/2023\/generative-expand\/generative-expand-prompt-box.jpg\" alt=\"The Generative Expand prompt box.\" width=\"596\" height=\"113\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The prompt box.<\/div>\n<p>But when you just want Photoshop to fill the area with content that matches the rest of the photo, leave the prompt box empty and click the Generate button.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/2023\/generative-expand\/generative-expand-generate-button.jpg\" alt=\"Clicking the Generate button to run Generative Expand in Photoshop\" width=\"596\" height=\"113\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Leaving the prompt box empty and clicking Generate.<\/div>\n<p>Photoshop needs to send the file over the internet to Adobe\u2019s servers where the AI content is generated, and a <strong>progress bar<\/strong> appears while you wait. In my experience it takes 10-15 seconds.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/2023\/generative-expand\/generative-expand-progress-bar.jpg\" alt=\"The Generative Expand progress bar.\" width=\"666\" height=\"285\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The progress bar.<\/div>\n<p>The added canvas area is then filled with AI-generated content that matches the original photo. <\/p>\n<p>And in my case, it looks great. Generative Expand added more grass and flowers in the foreground, more trees in the background, and even extended the kitten\u2019s tail.
