Super Resolution uses AI and machine learning to intelligently double the width and height of your image, resulting in a new file that\u2019s four times larger than the original photo.<\/p>\n

And while Photoshop\u2019s upscaling methods can make images too soft, Super Resolution in Camera Raw uses machine learning to fill the added space with new detail so the upscaled version looks as good as, or even better than, the original.<\/p>\n

When to use Super Resolution<\/h3>\n

Super Resolution is a great way to double the width and height of your photo and is perfect for when you need to:<\/p>\n

  • Upscale an image to print at a larger size<\/li>\n
  • Enlarge a photo that was heavily cropped<\/li>\n
  • Or upscale an older photo taken with a lower resolution camera<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Probably the most common use for Super Resolution, and what I personally use it for the most, is to upscale a photo that was cropped to a much smaller size. So that\u2019s what I\u2019ll do in this tutorial.<\/p>\n

    Which file types does Super Resolution support?<\/h3>\n

    Super Resolution works best with raw files because Camera Raw can use the extra information in the raw file to further enhance the detail. But it also works with JPEG and TIFF files and you\u2019ll still get great results.<\/p>\n

    Any drawbacks or limitations with Super Resolution?<\/h3>\n

    As impressive as Super Resolution is at upscaling images, there are some limitations to be aware of:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • It won\u2019t magically fix an image that\u2019s out of focus. All you\u2019ll get is a larger version of an out-of-focus image.<\/li>\n
    • Upscaling an image by 4x can dramatically increase its file size, especially when working with raw files. You\u2019ll see what I mean at the end of this tutorial.<\/li>\n
    • Super Resolution cannot be applied to the same image more than once.<\/li>\n
    • Finally, the width or height of an image in Camera Raw cannot exceed 65,000 pixels or 500 megapixels (MP). But most photos fall well below this limit even at 4x their original size, so it\u2019s usually not something to worry about.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
