So double-click on the name <q>Background copy<\/q> and rename the layer <q><strong>Small<\/strong><\/q>. Don\u2019t select the Rectangular Marquee Tool near the top since that\u2019s a selection tool. The shape will become the smaller version of the image, so make sure to surround everything that should appear inside it.<\/p>\n<p>Click in the upper left of your subject to set a starting point for the shape. Then keep your mouse button held down and drag towards the bottom right. Drag the shape to where you need it, and then release your spacebar and continue dragging out the rest of the shape.<\/p>\n<h3>How to complete the shape<\/h3>\n<p>Release your mouse button when you\u2019re done to complete the shape, at which point Photoshop fills it with black:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/2021\/picture-in-picture\/new\/shape-drawn-around-subject.jpg\" alt=\"Releasing your mouse button completes the shape.\" width=\"710\" height=\"477\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Releasing your mouse button completes the shape.<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"sub\">Step 14: Resize the shape if needed<\/h2>\n<p>Since the shape is completely blocking the image behind it, it\u2019s hard to see if it was drawn exactly where we need it. So to see the image through the shape, lower the <strong>Opacity<\/strong> of the shape layer in the Layers panel to <strong>50 percent<\/strong>. The shape will once again block the image from view:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/2021\/picture-in-picture\/shape-layer-opacity-100percent.png\" alt=\"Resetting the shape layer's opacity to 100 percent.\" width=\"295\" height=\"151\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Press 0 to reset the shape's opacity to 100 percent.<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"sub\">Step 15: Drag the <q>Small<\/q> layer above the shape<\/h2>\n<p>Next, we'll place the image on the <q>Small<\/q> layer into the shape. So click on the <q>Small<\/q> layer and drag it above the shape layer. The size you need will depend on your image. Here I\u2019m dragging down and to the right so the light source for the shadow appears to be coming from the upper left:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/2021\/picture-in-picture\/new\/drag-shadow-angle-distance.jpg\" alt=\"Dragging the drop shadow down and to the right of the photo.\" width=\"803\" height=\"455\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Dragging the shadow down and to the right.<\/div>\n<p>Or you can enter specific Angle and Distance values in the dialog box. I\u2019ll set the Angle to <strong>135 degrees<\/strong> and the Distance to <strong>50 pixels<\/strong>. You may need a smaller or larger Distance value depending on your image:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/2021\/picture-in-picture\/drop-shadow-angle-distance-options.png\" alt=\"Setting the Angle and Distance of the drop shadow in Photoshop's Layer Style dialog box\" width=\"354\" height=\"265\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Entering specific Angle and Distance values.<\/div>\n<h3>The shadow size<\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>Size<\/strong> value controls the softness or feathering of the shadow edges. I'll set it to <strong>15 pixels<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/2021\/picture-in-picture\/drop-shadow-size-option.png\" alt=\"Softening the shadow edges by increasing the Size value.\" width=\"354\" height=\"129\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Softening the shadow edges by increasing the size.<\/div>\n<h3>The shadow opacity<\/h3>\n<p>And you can adjust the intensity of the shadow (how light or dark it appears) by dragging the <strong>Opacity<\/strong> slider. But I\u2019ll leave it at the default value of <strong>35 percent<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/2021\/picture-in-picture\/drop-shadow-opacity-option.png\" alt=\"Leaving the shadow opacity at the default value.\" width=\"354\" height=\"156\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Leaving the Opacity at the default value.<\/div>\n<p>Click OK when you\u2019re done to close the Layer Style dialog box. And here\u2019s the effect with the border and shadow added to the smaller photo. Only one more thing left to do:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/2021\/picture-in-picture\/new\/second-image-with-border-and-shadow.jpg\" alt=\"The picture in picture effect with a border and drop shadow added to the smaller photo.\" width=\"710\" height=\"477\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The effect with the border and drop shadow added.<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"sub\">Step 20: Rotate the shape<\/h2>\n<p>Finally, you can add more excitement to the effect by rotating the shape around your subject.<\/p>\n<p>In the Layers panel, make sure the shape layer is active:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/2021\/picture-in-picture\/make-sure-shape-layer-active.png\" alt=\"Selecting the shape layer in Photoshop's Layers panel.\" width=\"295\" height=\"209\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Selecting the shape layer in the Layers panel.<\/div>\n<p>And with the Rectangle Tool still active in the toolbar, hover your mouse cursor just outside one of the shape\u2019s handles. The cursor will change into a <strong>Rotate icon<\/strong> (a curved line with an arrow on both ends):<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/2021\/picture-in-picture\/rotate-icon.jpg\" alt=\"Hovering the mouse cursor outside a handle to switch to the Rotate icon.\" width=\"247\" height=\"167\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Hover near a handle to get the Rotate icon.<\/div>\n<p>Then click and drag to rotate the shape. The image inside the shape will remain fixed in place.
