The term <em>monochromatic<\/em> means that the colors in the image are limited to different shades of the same hue, or the same <q>main<\/q> color. And this is a great way to simplify an image or convey a certain mood or emotion. Black and white photography is monochromatic since it uses only shades of gray, but any color can work.<\/p>\n<p>We'll start by going step-by-step through the basics of how to convert your image to monochromatic color using a Solid Color fill layer, which is the easiest way to do it. Then we'll learn how to combine some of the steps to create the effect even faster. From there, we'll look at a variation of the effect that mixes a single color with the photo's original colors to create a unified color theme. And finally, I'll show you the trick to choosing your color directly from the image itself.<\/p>\n<p>I'm using Photoshop 2021 but any recent version will work.  You can <a href=\"https:\/\/adobe.prf.hn\/click\/camref:1100lrdjJ\/destination:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.adobe.com%2Fproducts%2Fphotoshop.html\" title=\"Get Photoshop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">get the latest Photoshop version here<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>You can follow along by opening any image into Photoshop. Once we've learned how it works, I'll show you how to combine a few of the steps to speed things up.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 1: Add a Solid Color fill layer above the image<\/h3>\n<p>The easiest way to convert an image to monochromatic color is by using a Solid Color fill layer. <\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"\/basics\/layers\/layers-panel\/\" title=\"Learn more\">Layers panel<\/a>, the original photo appears on the <a href=\"\/basics\/background-layer-photoshop-cc\/\" title=\"Learn more\">Background layer<\/a>. At this point, we just need the <strong>hue<\/strong> (the main color). And from here, we can change the  blend mode of the fill layer <em>before<\/em> it's added. <\/p>\n<p>Change the <strong>Mode<\/strong> (short for Blend Mode) option from Normal to <strong>Color<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/2021\/monochromatic-color\/new-layer-blend-mode.png\" alt=\"Changing the Mode of the Solid Color fill layer to Color.\" width=\"434\" height=\"155\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Changing the Mode to Color.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 3: Choose a color from the Color Picker<\/h3>\n<p>Then click OK to close the dialog box, and the Solid Color fill layer appears above the image, just like before. But this time, because Photoshop automatically set the blend mode to Color, the fill layer is not blocking the image from view. Instead, the color and the image are already blending together.<\/p>\n<p>Since the default color is black, the initial result is a <a href=\"\/photo-editing\/converting-color-photos-to-black-and-white-in-photoshop\/\" title=\"Learn more\">black and white effect<\/a>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/2021\/monochromatic-color\/initial-black-and-white-image.jpg\" alt=\"Setting the Solid Color fill layer to black converts the photo to black and white.\" width=\"803\" height=\"441\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Choosing black as the fill color converts the image to black and white.<\/div>\n<p>But you can choose any color you like from the Color Picker. This is a great way to simplify an image and <a href=\"\/photo-editing\/how-to-unify-colors-in-an-image-with-photoshop\/\" title=\"Learn more\">create a unified color theme<\/a>, especially when the original colors are too different and distracting.<\/p>\n<p>In the Layers panel, simply lower the <strong>opacity<\/strong> of the Solid Color fill layer. Here's how to do it.<\/p>\n<p>First, in the Layers panel, I'll drag my existing Solid Color fill layer down onto the <strong>trash bin<\/strong> so I'm starting once again with the original image:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/2021\/monochromatic-color\/delete-fill-layer.png\" alt=\"Dragging the Solid Color fill layer onto the trash bin\" width=\"267\" height=\"220\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Deleting the existing fill layer.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 1: Click the Foreground Color swatch<\/h3>\n<p>You may have noticed that every time we added a Solid Color fill layer, the Color Picker was initially set to black.
