While Photoshop has allowed us to warp images for years, the controls and options for the Warp command have, up till now, been pretty limited. But as of CC 2020, that's no longer the case. Adobe has added powerful new enhancements to Warp, including new Warp grid presets, new custom grid sizes, and the ability to add our own grid lines and control points wherever we need them. We can now select and warp multiple points within the image at the same time, and we can even scale and rotate different areas of the image independently!<\/p>\n<p>In this tutorial, I'll show you how every new feature of the Warp command works. To use these features, you'll need <a href=\"https:\/\/prf.hn\/l\/dlXjD2w\" title=\"Get Photoshop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Photoshop 2020 or newer<\/a>. The original <a href=\"https:\/\/prf.hn\/l\/n0O3QR4\" title=\"View image on Adobe Stock\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dancer photo<\/a> was downloaded from Adobe Stock, and I used the new <a href=\"basics\/object-selection-tool\/\" title=\"Learn more\">Object Selection Tool<\/a> in Photoshop CC 2020 to remove him from the rest of the image. The gradient behind him is one of many new gradients included with Photoshop CC 2020:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/basics\/cc\/warp\/original-photoshop-document.jpg\" alt=\"The original Photoshop document\" width=\"803\" height=\"447\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The original document. Dancer from Adobe Stock.<\/div>\n<p>In the <a href=\"\/basics\/layers\/layers-panel\/\" title=\"Learn more\">Layers panel<\/a>, the man appears on his own layer (&quot;Layer 1&quot;) above a Gradient Fill layer. Make sure you have the correct layer selected before choosing the Warp command:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/basics\/cc\/warp\/photoshop-layers-panel.png\" alt=\"Selecting the layer that will have the Warp command applied in Photoshop's Layers panel\" width=\"297\" height=\"321\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Selecting the layer that will be warped.<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"\/basics\/learning-the-photoshop-interface\/\" title=\"Learn more\">Related: Master the Photoshop interface!<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"sub\">Warping smart objects vs normal layers<\/h2>\n<p>Also before choosing the Warp command, I highly recommend that you first convert your layer into a <strong>smart object<\/strong>. The reason is that if you warp a normal pixel layer, the changes you make become permanent. But if you warp a <a href=\"\/basics\/how-to-create-smart-objects-in-photoshop\/\" title=\"Learn more\">smart object<\/a>, the warp remains editable. One is by going up to the <strong>Edit<\/strong> menu in the Menu Bar, choosing <strong>Transform<\/strong>, and then choosing <strong>Warp<\/strong>. This lets you access the Warp command directly:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/basics\/cc\/warp\/edit-transform-warp.png\" alt=\"How to select the Warp command in Photoshop\" width=\"566\" height=\"227\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Going to Edit &gt; Transform &gt; Warp.<\/div>\n<p>And the other way is through Photoshop's <a href=\"\/basics\/transform-and-warp-images-with-free-transform-in-photoshop-cc-2019\/\" title=\"Learn more\">Free Transform<\/a> command. To undo your last step, go up to the <strong>Edit<\/strong> menu and choose <strong>Undo<\/strong>, or press <strong>Ctrl+Z<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Command+Z<\/strong> (Mac) on your keyboard. New in Photoshop CC 2020, you can now choose one of three  <strong>Warp grid presets<\/strong>. Here I've chosen the 3x3 grid. And notice that instead of seeing control points only in the corners, we now have a control point at each spot where the horizontal and vertical grid lines intersect. But in Photoshop CC 2020, we can also warp multiple control points at once.<\/p>\n<h3>Selecting multiple control points<\/h3>\n<p>To select multiple points, press and hold the <strong>Shift<\/strong> key on your keyboard and click on the points you want to select. Or a faster way is to hold Shift and simply drag around the points to select them. If you select a point by mistake, keep your Shift key held down and click on the point to deselect it.<\/p>\n<p>Here I'm selecting the four points in the center of the grid. I'll enter <strong>6<\/strong> for both. Just keep in mind that changing the grid size after warping the image will discard any changes you've made:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/basics\/cc\/warp\/custom-6x6-warp-grid-photoshop.jpg\" alt=\"A custom 6x6 warp grid created in Photoshop CC 2020\" width=\"487\" height=\"602\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">A custom 6x6 Warp grid.<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"sub\">How to add your own Warp grid lines<\/h2>\n<p>Finally, for precise control over the warp, Photoshop CC 2020 now lets you add your own grid lines wherever you need them!<\/p>\n<p>In the Options Bar, you'll find a new option called <strong>Split<\/strong>, with three icons beside it that each gives you a different way to &quot;split&quot; the grid. Starting from the left, <strong>Split Crosswise<\/strong> adds both a vertical and horizontal grid line, <strong>Split Vertical<\/strong> adds a vertical grid line, and <strong>Split Horizontal<\/strong> adds, you guessed it, a horizontal grid line:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/basics\/cc\/warp\/warp-mode-split-option.png\" alt=\"The Split Crosswise, Split Vertical and Split Horizontal Warp grid options in Photoshop CC 2020\" width=\"422\" height=\"100\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The Crosswise (left), Vertical (middle) and Horizontal (right) Split options.<\/div>\n<p>To add a grid line, first choose the type of split you need. I'll choose Crosswise. The Split Crosswise option is usually best because it always adds a control point at the exact spot where you click:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/basics\/cc\/warp\/choose-split-crosswise.png\" alt=\"Selecting the Split Crosswise option for the Warp grid in Photoshop CC 2020\" width=\"423\" height=\"101\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Selecting the Split Crosswise option.<\/div>\n<p>Then simply move your mouse cursor over the image and click on the spot where you need to split the grid. I'll click on the man's arm. I can then click and drag the new control point to warp the image without moving any of the other points. Rather than selecting one of the Split options in the Options Bar, just press and hold the <strong>Alt<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Option<\/strong> (Mac) key on your keyboard and click on the spot where you need to split the grid. Photoshop will automatically choose the best Split option (Crosswise, Vertical or Horizontal) based on where you click.<\/p>\n<p>In most cases, Photoshop will choose the <strong>Split Crosswise<\/strong> option, which adds both a vertical and horizontal grid line. But if you click close enough to an existing vertical grid line, then Photoshop will assume you want to add a horizontal line and will choose <strong>Split Horizontal<\/strong>.
