We'll add a border around each one so they look like separate photos, and then we'll move and rotate them into place. Finally, we'll change the background color, and we'll finish off by adding a drop shadow behind the effect.<\/p>\n<p>Here's <a href=\"\/\/prf.hn\/l\/dlXjNzN\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"View on Adobe Stock\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the image<\/a> I'll be using. You can also follow along with my <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ziJiOhfbi5M\" title=\"Watch the video\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">video of this tutorial<\/a> on our YouTube channel. Or download this tutorial as a <a href=\"\/print-ready-pdfs\/\" title=\"Learn more\">print-ready PDF<\/a>!<\/p>\n<h3>Step 1: Crop the image into a square<\/h3>\n<p>The first thing we need to do is crop our image into a square. Select the <a href=\"\/basics\/selections\/rectangular-marquee-tool\/\" title=\"View tutorial\">Rectangular Marquee Tool<\/a> from the Toolbar:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/cc\/simple-photo-collage\/rectangular-marquee-tool-photoshop.png\" alt=\"Selecting the Rectangular Marquee Tool in Photoshop.\" width=\"72\" height=\"131\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Selecting the Rectangular Marquee Tool.<\/div>\n<h4>Snapping the selections to the guides<\/h4>\n<p>To make sure that our selections will snap to the guides, go up to the <strong>View<\/strong> menu, choose <strong>Snap To<\/strong>, and make sure that <strong>Guides<\/strong> has a checkmark beside it. Click and drag a selection outline around it. Click on the <a href=\"\/basics\/background-layer-photoshop-cc\/\" title=\"Virw tutorial\">Background layer<\/a> to select it. And in the Layers panel, we now see all nine squares, each on a separate layer, above the image:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/cc\/simple-photo-collage\/all-squares-copied.png\" alt=\"The Layers panel showing all nine squares selected and copied in Photoshop\" width=\"275\" height=\"421\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">All 9 squares have been copied.<\/div>\n<p class=\"members-ad-top\"><a href=\"\/print-ready-pdfs\/\">Download all of our Photoshop tutorials as PDFs!<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Step 4: Hide the guides<\/h3>\n<p>We don't need our guides anymore, so let's hide them by going up to the <strong>View<\/strong> menu, choosing <strong>Show<\/strong>, and then choosing <strong>Guides<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/cc\/simple-photo-collage\/hide-guides-photoshop.png\" alt=\"Turning off the guides in the Photoshop document\" width=\"515\" height=\"161\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Turning off the guides.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 5: Add more canvas space<\/h3>\n<p>To give us room to move and rotate the squares, we'll <a href=\"\/photo-editing\/increasing-canvas-size-crop-tool-photoshop\/\" title=\"View tutorial\">add more canvas space<\/a> around the image. And we can do that using the Crop Tool. Select the <strong>Crop Tool<\/strong> from the Toolbar:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/cc\/simple-photo-collage\/photoshop-crop-tool.png\" alt=\"Selecting the Crop Tool in Photoshop\" width=\"72\" height=\"144\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Reselecting the Crop Tool.<\/div>\n<p>Press and hold the <strong>Alt<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Option<\/strong> (Mac) key on your keyboard, and then click and drag any of the crop handles outward and away from the image. And to make them look like separate photos, we'll add a stroke around them. Then, keep an eye on the square in the upper left of your image as you increase the <strong>Size<\/strong> value by dragging the slider. First, click on a square to select it, and then press <strong>Ctrl+T<\/strong> (Win) \/<strong> Command+T<\/strong> (Mac) to quickly choose <strong>Free Transform<\/strong>. Move the square into place, and then rotate it into position. Press <strong>Enter<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Return<\/strong> (Mac) to accept it. <\/p>\n<p>In my case, I'm going to leave the center square in its original spot, but I'll continue moving and rotating the outer squares until I'm happy with the results. If you just want to move a square without rotating it, there's no need to open Free Transform. One of them is that we can change the background color. To add the shadow to all the squares at once, we'll first place them into a <a href=\"\/basics\/layers\/layer-groups\/\" title=\"View tutorial\">layer group<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>Grouping the squares<\/h4>\n<p>Click on the top layer (Layer 1) to select it. Then press and hold your <strong>Shift<\/strong> key and click on the layer directly above the fill layer (Layer 9). You can also adjust the <strong>Opacity<\/strong> to make the shadow appear lighter or darker.
