Let's get started!<\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<aside><p class=\"members-ad-top\"><a href=\"\/print-ready-pdfs\/\">Download all of our Photoshop tutorials as PDFs!<\/a><\/p><\/aside>\n<section>\n<h2 class=\"sub\">How To Create An Infrared Glow Effect<\/h2>\n<h3>Step 1: Add A Black &amp; White Adjustment Layer<\/h3>\n<p>We're going to apply the infrared effect and the glow effect  to the image separately, so let's start with the infrared effect which we can quickly add using a simple preset found in the <a href=\"\/photo-editing\/black-and-white-cs3\/\">Black &amp; White<\/a> image adjustment. In the <strong>Adjustments<\/strong> panel, click on the <strong>Black &amp; White<\/strong> icon (third icon from the left, middle row):<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/infrared-glow\/black-and-white-icon.gif\" alt=\"Clicking the Black &amp; White icon in the Adjustments panel in Photoshop CS6.\" width=\"233\" height=\"162\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Clicking the Black &amp; White icon in the Adjustments panel.<\/div>\n<p>This will add a Black &amp; White <strong><a href=\"\/photo-editing\/adjustment-layers\/\">adjustment layer<\/a><\/strong> (named \"Black &amp; White 1\") above the image in the Layers panel:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/infrared-glow\/bw-adjustment-layer.gif\" alt=\"The Layers panel showing the Black &amp; White adjustment layer.\" width=\"303\" height=\"265\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The Layers panel showing the Black & White adjustment layer.<\/div>\n<p>Your photo will instantly be converted from color to black &amp; white in the document window:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/infrared-glow\/image-black-and-white.jpg\" alt=\"The image after adding the Black &amp; White adjustment layer.\" width=\"640\" height=\"443\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The image after adding the adjustment layer.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 2: Select The Infrared Preset<\/h3>\n<p>The controls and options for the Black &amp; White adjustment appear in the <strong>Properties<\/strong> panel (new in Photoshop CS6). Near the top of the panel is the <strong>Preset<\/strong> option which is initially set to Default. Click on the word Default and select <strong>Infrared<\/strong> from the list of presets that appears:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/infrared-glow\/infrared-preset.gif\" alt=\"Choosing the Infrared preset for the Black &amp; White adjustment layer.\" width=\"312\" height=\"181\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Changing the Preset option from Default to Infrared.<\/div>\n<p>This will instantly give your image more of an infrared look to it. In my case, though, it's made most of the trees and grass too bright, causing them to lose much of their detail:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/infrared-glow\/image-infrared-preset.jpg\" alt=\"The image after adding the Black &amp; White adjustment layer.\" width=\"640\" height=\"443\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The image after changing the preset to Infrared.<\/div>\n<p>To fix that, since the trees and grass contain yellow and green, all I need to do is drag the <strong>Yellows<\/strong> and <strong>Greens<\/strong> sliders in the Properties panel towards the left to decrease the brightness in those areas. You can fine-tune the brightness of any area in your photo to your liking simply by dragging the appropriate color slider left or right (based on the original colors in the image):<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/infrared-glow\/color-sliders.gif\" alt=\"Dragging the color siders for the Black &amp; White adjustment layer.\" width=\"312\" height=\"293\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Dragging the color sliders to increase or decrease brightness in specific areas.<\/div>\n<p>Here's what my image looks like after fine-tuning it with the color sliders:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/infrared-glow\/image-infrared.jpg\" alt=\"The infrared image.\" width=\"640\" height=\"443\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The detail in the trees and grass has been restored.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 3: Select The Background Layer<\/h3>\n<p>Now, let's work on adding our glow effect. Click on the <a href=\"\/basics\/layers\/background-layer\/\"><strong>Background layer<\/strong><\/a> in the Layers panel to select it:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/infrared-glow\/select-background-layer.gif\" alt=\"Selecting the Background layer in the Layers panel.\" width=\"303\" height=\"178\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Selecting the Background layer.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 4: Convert It Into A Smart Object<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Right-click<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Control-click<\/strong> (Mac) directly on the Background layer in the Layers panel and choose <strong>Convert to Smart Object<\/strong> from the menu that appears:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/infrared-glow\/convert-to-smart-object.gif\" alt=\"Choosing the Convert to Smart Object option.\" width=\"207\" height=\"153\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Choose \"Convert to Smart Object\".<\/div>\n<p>This converts the Background layer into a <strong>Smart Object<\/strong> which means (among other things) that we can now apply filters to it non-destructively (filters applied to Smart Objects are known as <strong>Smart Filters<\/strong>). You'll see a small icon in the lower right corner of the layer's thumbnail telling us it's now a Smart Object:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/infrared-glow\/smart-object.gif\" alt=\"The Background layer has been converted into a Smart Object.\" width=\"303\" height=\"177\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">A Smart Object icon appears in the thumbnail.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 5: Reset Your Foreground And Background Colors To Black And White<\/h3>\n<p>In a moment, we're going to apply Photoshop's Diffuse Glow filter to the Smart Object to add our glow effect, but the Diffuse Glow filter uses our current <strong>Foreground and Background colors<\/strong> as the colors for the glow, which means that before we apply the filter, we first need to make sure our Foreground and Background colors are set to their defaults (<strong>black<\/strong> for the Foreground color, <strong>white<\/strong> for the Background color). The easiest way to do this is to reset them by pressing the letter <strong>D<\/strong> (for \"Defaults\") on the keyboard. You can see the current Foreground and Background colors in the <strong>color swatches<\/strong> near the bottom of the <strong>Tools<\/strong> panel. The upper left swatch (the Foreground color) should be black and the lower right (Background color) swatch should be white:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/infrared-glow\/foreground-background-color.gif\" alt=\"The Foreground and Background color swatches in the Tools panel.\" width=\"76\" height=\"147\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Press \"D\" on your keyboard to reset the Foreground (left) and Background (right) colors to their defaults.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 6: Apply The Diffuse Glow Filter<\/h3>\n<p>With our Foreground and Background colors reset, we can apply the  Diffuse Glow filter. In previous versions of Photoshop, we could select Diffuse Glow directly from the Filter menu, but Adobe cleaned up the Filter menu in CS6 and now many of the filters (Diffuse Glow being one of them) can only be accessed through the Filter Gallery. Go up to the <strong>Filter<\/strong> menu in the Menu Bar along the top of the screen and choose <strong>Filter Gallery<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/infrared-glow\/select-filter-gallery.gif\" alt=\"Selecting the Filter Gallery from the Filter menu in Photoshop CS6.\" width=\"257\" height=\"126\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Go to Filter &gt; Filter Gallery.<\/div>\n<p>When the large Filter Gallery appears on your screen, use the middle column to navigate to the <strong>Distort<\/strong> category, then select the <strong>Diffuse Glow<\/strong> filter:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/infrared-glow\/distort-diffuse-glow.gif\" alt=\"Selecting Diffuse Glow from the Distort filter category.\" width=\"302\" height=\"241\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Choosing the Diffuse Glow filter from the Distort category.<\/div>\n<p>Before we start adjusting the glow, let's first make sure we can see the entire image in the <strong>preview area<\/strong> on the left. <strong>Right-click<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Control-click<\/strong> (Mac) anywhere inside the preview area and choose <strong>Fit in View<\/strong> from the menu that appears:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/infrared-glow\/fit-in-view.gif\" alt=\"Selecting the Fit in View option in the Filter Gallery.\" width=\"135\" height=\"103\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Right-click (Win) \/ Control-click (Mac) in the preview area and choose Fit in View.<\/div>\n<p>Photoshop will zoom the image so it fits nicely within the preview area boundaries:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/infrared-glow\/filter-gallery-cs6.jpg\" alt=\"The Filter Gallery in Photoshop CS6.\" width=\"640\" height=\"324\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The image now fits inside the preview area.<\/div>\n<p>One thing you'll notice is that even though we just finished converting the photo to black and white, it appears in full color again in the preview area of the Filter Gallery. That's because the black and white effect is contained entirely within our Black &amp; White adjustment layer, and we're applying the filter only to the Smart Object below it, so all we see in the preview area is the contents of the Smart Object (which holds the full color version of the photo). The Filter Gallery has no idea that there's a Black &amp; White adjustment layer sitting above the Smart Object, but when we're done with the Diffuse Glow filter and close out of the Filter Gallery, we'll go back to seeing the infrared black and white version of the image in the document window.<\/p>\n<p>At the top of the right column in the Filter Gallery are the three slider controls for the Diffuse Glow filter. Drag the top <strong>Graininess<\/strong> slider right or left to increase or decrease the amount of film grain the image, or drag the slider down to 0 to turn the grain effect off if you don't like it. The actual glow effect is controlled by the other two sliders. The <strong>Glow Amount<\/strong> slider controls the strength and intensity of the glow, while  the <strong>Clear Amount<\/strong> slider controls the  tonal range that's affected by the glow. Dragging the slider further to the right will limit the glow effect to just the lighter areas of the image, while dragging it to the left will add in the darker areas as well. There's no preset recipe here for the values to use for each option. It will depend entirely on your image and on your own personal taste, so just keep an eye on the preview area as you drag each slider until you're happy with the results:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/infrared-glow\/diffuse-glow-sliders.gif\" alt=\"The Graininess, Glow Amount and Clear Amount sliders for the Diffuse Glow filter.\" width=\"272\" height=\"212\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Use the Glow Amount and Clear Amount sliders to control the look of the glow. Add grain with the Graininess slider.<\/div>\n<p>If you want to compare the glow effect with the original image, click on the Diffuse Glow filter's <strong>visibility icon<\/strong> (the eyeball) below the three sliders. Click it once to hide the filter effects and view the original image in the preview area, then click it again to turn the filter back on<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/infrared-glow\/diffuse-glow-eyeball.gif\" alt=\"The Diffuse Glow filter visibility icon in the Filter Gallery.\" width=\"293\" height=\"151\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The filter visibility icon below the sliders.<\/div>\n<p>When you're done, click OK in the top right corner of the Filter Gallery to close out of it and  apply the Diffuse Glow filter as a Smart Filter to the Smart Object. Now that we're no longer in the Filter Gallery, we again see the effects of the Black &amp; White adjustment layer, now combined with the glow effect from the Diffuse Glow filter:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/infrared-glow\/image-diffuse-glow.jpg\" alt=\"The image after applying the Diffuse Glow filter.\" width=\"640\" height=\"443\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The image after applying the Diffuse Glow filter.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 7: Lower The Opacity Of the Smart Filter If Needed<\/h3>\n<p>You may not need this step with your image, but in my case, the Diffuse Glow filter has blown out the detail in the sky, as well as some detail in the water. A simple solution to the problem is to lower the <strong>opacity<\/strong> of the Diffuse Glow filter to bring back some of the missing detail, and since we applied it as a Smart Filter, lowering the opacity is easy!<\/p>\n<p>If we look in the Layers panel, we can see the Filter Gallery listed as a Smart Filter below the Smart Object. We can access blending options for the Smart Filter by <strong>double-clicking<\/strong> on the small <strong>Blending Options<\/strong> icon to the right of the filter's name:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/infrared-glow\/blending-options-icon.gif\" alt=\"The Blending Options icon for the Smart Filter in the Layers panel.\" width=\"303\" height=\"195\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Double-clicking the Blending Options icon.<\/div>\n<p>This opens the Blending Options dialog box where we can change the blend mode or the opacity (or both) of the filter. I'm going to leave the blend mode set to Normal, but I'll use the <strong>Opacity<\/strong> option to lower the opacity down to 75%:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/infrared-glow\/blending-options-opacity.jpg\" alt=\"The Blending Options for the Smart Filter in Photoshop CS6.\" width=\"353\" height=\"340\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Lowering the Filter Gallery's opacity.<\/div>\n<p>This allows some of the Smart Object's original contents to show through the filter effects, restoring some detail in the sky and water:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/infrared-glow\/image-blending-options.jpg\" alt=\"The image after lowering the opacity of the Filter Gallery.\" width=\"640\" height=\"443\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The image after lowering the opacity of the Smart Filter.<\/div>\n<p>If you need to go back and make changes to the Diffuse Glow settings at this point, once again it's easy thanks to Smart Filters. Simply <strong>double-click<\/strong> on the <strong>Filter Gallery<\/strong> in the Layers panel. This will re-open the Filter Gallery to the Diffuse Glow settings where you can make any changes you need. Click OK when you're done to once again close out of the gallery and you'll see your changes instantly updated in the document window. You can do this as many times as you want because Smart Filters are non-destructive so no permanent changes are ever made to the image:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/infrared-glow\/smart-filter-name.gif\" alt=\"Re-opening the Filter Gallery Smart Filter from the Layers panel.\" width=\"303\" height=\"149\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">We can double-click on any Smart Filter in the list to re-open its dialog box and make any changes we need.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 8: Select The Black &amp; White Adjustment Layer<\/h3>\n<p>Let's finish things off by bringing back just a hint of the photo's original colors. First, click on the <strong>Black &amp; White<\/strong> adjustment layer in the Layers panel to select it:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/infrared-glow\/select-adjustment-layer.gif\" alt=\"Selecting the Black &amp; White adjustment layer in the Layers panel.\" width=\"303\" height=\"199\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Selecting the Black &amp; White adjustment layer.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 9: Lower The Opacity To 90%<\/h3>\n<p>In the upper right of the Layers panel is the <strong>Opacity<\/strong> option.
