Specifically, we'll learn how to blend our text into clouds, making the text look like it's floating in the sky, with clouds passing in front of the letters. As we'll see, blending text into clouds, or into any background, is easy. All it takes is an image, some text, and a slider in Photoshop's Blending Options. Once you know the steps, you'll be able to quickly blend text into any background you like. You can also follow along with my <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ph_WzMdeUbk\" title=\"Watch the video\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">video of this tutorial<\/a> on our YouTube channel. Or download this tutorial as a <a href=\"\/print-ready-pdfs\/\" title=\"Learn more\">print-ready PDF<\/a>!<\/p>\n<h3>Step 1: Open your image<\/h3>\n<p>To create the effect, you'll need a photo of clouds. I'll use <a href=\"https:\/\/prf.hn\/l\/Qx4ONED\" title=\"View this image on Adobe Stock\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this image<\/a> that I downloaded from Adobe Stock:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/cc\/blend-text-with-clouds\/clouds-photo.jpg\" alt=\"The original photo of clouds, before blending in the text\" width=\"704\" height=\"414\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The original image. Photo credit: Adobe Stock.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 2: Add your text<\/h3>\n<p>Add your text to the image. If we look in my <a href=\"\/basics\/layers\/layers-panel\/\">Layers panel<\/a>, we see that I've gone ahead and added some text, and the text is sitting on a Type layer above the <a href=\"\/basics\/background-layer-photoshop-cc\/\" title=\"View tutorial\">Background layer<\/a>. I'll turn the text on  by clicking the Type layer's <strong>visibility icon<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/cc\/blend-text-with-clouds\/type-layer-layers-panel-photoshop.png\" alt=\"Turning on the Type layer in the Layers panel in Photoshop\" width=\"290\" height=\"291\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Turning on the Type layer in the Layers panel.<\/div>\n<p>And now we see the words \"creative clouds\" (a little spin on Adobe's &quot;Creative Cloud&quot;) in front of the image. I've added a slight <a href=\"\/basics\/how-to-draw-gradients-with-the-gradient-tool-in-photoshop\/\" title=\"View tutorial\">gradient<\/a> and an outer glow, just to make the text easier to see:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/cc\/blend-text-with-clouds\/text-in-image-photoshop.jpg\" alt=\"The text has been added to the image in Photoshop\" width=\"704\" height=\"414\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Adding the text.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 3: Open Photoshop's Blending Options<\/h3>\n<p>At the moment, the text is sitting in front of the image. To blend the text <em>into<\/em> the image, we can use Photoshop's Blending Options. To open the Blending Options, click the <strong>Layer Styles<\/strong> icon (the &quot;fx&quot; icon) at the bottom of the Layers panel:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/cc\/blend-text-with-clouds\/photoshop-layer-styles-icon.png\" alt=\"Clicking the Layer Styles icon to open the Blending Options\" width=\"274\" height=\"192\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Clicking the Layer Styles icon.<\/div>\n<p>Then choose <strong>Blending Options<\/strong> from the top of the list:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/cc\/blend-text-with-clouds\/photoshop-open-blending-options.png\" alt=\"Choosing Blending Options from the Layer Styles menu in Photoshop\" width=\"157\" height=\"128\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Opening the Blending Options.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 4: Use the \"Blend If\" sliders to blend the text into the background<\/h3>\n<p>This opens the Layer Style dialog box. At the bottom of the dialog box are two sliders. The one on top is labeled \"This Layer\", and the one below it is labeled \"Underlying Layer\". These are commonly-known as Photoshop's \"Blend If\" sliders, and they let us blend our currently-selected layer with the layer(s) below it based on the <em>luminosity<\/em>, or brightness values, of the layers:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/cc\/blend-text-with-clouds\/blend-if-sliders-photoshop.jpg\" alt=\"The Blend If sliders, This Layer and Underlying Layer, in the Layer Style dialog box in Photoshop\" width=\"349\" height=\"189\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The &quot;Blend If&quot; sliders in the Layer Style dialog box.<\/div>\n<p>First, make sure that the <strong>Blend If<\/strong> option above the sliders is set to <strong>Gray<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/cc\/blend-text-with-clouds\/blend-if-gray.jpg\" alt=\"The Blend If option set to Gray in the Layer Style dialog box in Photoshop\" width=\"349\" height=\"190\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Blend If should be set to Gray.<\/div>\n<p>To blend the text into the background, we only need the bottom slider (\"Underlying Layer\"). Click on the <strong>white triangle<\/strong> below the right side of the gradient bar and begin dragging it towards the left:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/cc\/blend-text-with-clouds\/drag-underluing-layer-slider-right.jpg\" alt=\"Dragging the white Underlying Layer slider to the left in the Layer Style dialog box\" width=\"353\" height=\"199\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Dragging the white &quot;Underlying Layer&quot; slider to the left.<\/div>\n<p>When you reach a certain point, you'll see your text begin to disappear, revealing the clouds through the letters. Notice, though, that the transition between the text and the clouds is looking too harsh:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/cc\/blend-text-with-clouds\/initial-text-blend.jpg\" alt=\"The text is starting to blend in with the clouds, but the effect looks too harsh\" width=\"704\" height=\"414\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The initial effect looks pretty bad.<\/div>\n<h3>Step 5: Split the slider in half to create a smooth blend<\/h3>\n<p>To create a smooth transition between the text and the clouds, press and hold the <strong>Alt<\/strong> (Win) \/ <strong>Option<\/strong> (Mac) key on your keyboard, and then click and drag the left side of the triangle to split the slider into two halves. The area in between the two halves creates a gradual blend between the text and the clouds behind it. The further you spread the two halves apart, the smoother the transition appears:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/cc\/blend-text-with-clouds\/split-slider-in-half.jpg\" alt=\"Splitting the Blend If slider in half to create a gradual blend between the text and the background\" width=\"349\" height=\"166\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">One slider becomes two.<\/div>\n<p>After splitting the slider in half, things are looking much better. I'll fine-tune the effect in a moment:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/cc\/blend-text-with-clouds\/text-background-gradual-blend-photoshop.jpg\" alt=\"The blend between the text and the clouds now looks much smoother\" width=\"704\" height=\"414\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Splitting the slider created a more seamless blend between the clouds and the text.<\/div>\n<h4>Why we don't need the black slider for this effect<\/h4>\n<p>So far, we've only used the white slider to blend the clouds in with the text. But there's also a <strong>black slider<\/strong> below the left side of the &quot;Underlying Layer&quot; gradient bar. The white slider blends the lightest parts of the image in with the text, while the black slider blends in the darkest areas.<\/p>\n<p>If we were blending a different type of background into the text, then we might also want to blend in the darker areas. We could do that by dragging the black slider towards the right. Holding Alt (Win) \/ Option (Mac) while dragging the black slider would split the slider in half to create a smooth transition, just as we've seen with the white slider. But in this case, all we would end up doing is blending the darker areas of the sky into the text, which wouldn't look right. We only want to blend in the clouds. Since the clouds are the lightest parts of the image, the only slider we need for this effect is the white one. <\/p>\n<h3>Step 6: Adjust the two halves of the slider to fine-tune the effect<\/h3>\n<p>Finally, keep an eye on your image as you adjust the left and right half of the white slider until you're happy with how the clouds are blending with the text:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-effects\/cc\/blend-text-with-clouds\/adjust-sliders-to-taste.jpg\" alt=\"Fine-tuning the text blending effect by adjusting each half of the slider\" width=\"349\" height=\"163\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Fine-tuning the effect by adjusting each half of the slider.<\/div>\n<p>Click OK to close the Layer Style dialog box, and you're done!
