I'll be using <strong>Photoshop CC<\/strong> here but this tutorial is also compatible with <strong>Photoshop CS6<\/strong>. Both techniques work by simply adding a Levels adjustment layer above the image and then changing the adjustment layer's blend mode. <\/p>\n<p>As we'll see, when using these methods to correct exposure problems, the only real difference comes down to which blend mode we need. To brighten a dark image, we used the Screen blend mode. This time, to darken an image that's looking too bright, we'll use Photoshop's <strong>Multiply<\/strong> blend mode. Let's see how it works!<\/p>\n<p>Here's a photo I shot recently at a local garden shop. But rather than brightening this image even more, let's learn how we can use the same basic technique to darken it. But for this technique, we won't need to use them. Instead, to darken the image, all we need to do is change the <strong>blend mode<\/strong> for the Levels adjustment layer.<\/p>\n<p>You'll find the Blend Mode option in the upper left of the Layers panel. By default, it's set to Normal. Click on the word &quot;Normal&quot; and change the blend mode to <strong>Multiply<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/cc\/darken-overexposed-images\/photoshop-multiply-blend-mode.png\" alt=\"Changing the blend mode of the adjustment layer to Multiply. \" width=\"298\" height=\"281\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Changing the blend mode of the adjustment layer to &quot;Multiply&quot;.<\/div>\n<p>Multiply is one of several <a href=\"..\/layer-blend-modes\/\">layer blend modes<\/a> in Photoshop that darken an image, and simply by changing the blend mode of the adjustment layer to <a href=\"\/photo-editing\/layer-blend-modes\/multiply\/\">Multiply<\/a>, the photo now appears darker, with more detail visible in the highlights and colors now looking richer and more saturated:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/cc\/darken-overexposed-images\/photoshop-image-multiply-blend-mode.jpg\" alt=\"The Multiply blend mode instantly darkens the image. \" width=\"642\" height=\"431\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The Multiply blend mode instantly darkens the image.<\/div>\n<p>To help see the difference, I've zoomed in on the flower for a side-by-side comparison. The original, overexposed version is on the left; the darkened version is on the right:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/cc\/darken-overexposed-images\/photoshop-multiply-comparison.jpg\" alt=\"A comparison of the original and darkened versions. \" width=\"642\" height=\"431\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">A comparison of the original (left) and darkened (right) versions.<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h3>Step 3: Lower The Opacity Of The Adjustment Layer<\/h3>\n<p>If, after changing the blend mode to Multiply, you find that your photo is now looking <em>too<\/em> dark, we can easily bring back some of the original brightness. All we need to do is lower the <a href=\"\/basics\/layers\/opacity-vs-fill\/\">opacity<\/a> of the Levels adjustment layer. You'll find the Opacity option in the upper right of the Layers panel, directly across from the Blend Mode option.<\/p>\n<p>By default, the opacity value is set to 100%. Keep an eye on your image as you lower the opacity. The more you lower it, the more the original image on the Background layer will show through the adjustment layer. As we learned in this tutorial and in the <a href=\"\/photo-editing\/how-to-instantly-brighten-underexposed-images-with-photoshop\/\">previous tutorial<\/a>, Photoshop makes it easy to fix minor exposure problems simply by adding a Levels adjustment layer above our image and changing its blend mode. Use the <em>Screen<\/em> blend mode to <em>brighten<\/em> underexposed images, or use the <em>Multiply<\/em> blend mode to <em>darken<\/em> overexposed images!<\/p>\n<p>While this technique works great with casual, everyday photos, it won't give you the kind of professional-level results you'll want for more important images.
