Of course, with no shortage of old photos lying around and a serious shortage of spare time, scanning, cropping and straightening each image individually can take too long. <\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, there's no need to do that thanks to an amazing feature first introduced back in Photoshop CS, the <strong>Crop and Straighten Photos<\/strong> command. With it, we can scan multiple images at once with our flatbed scanner, then let Photoshop automatically crop them, straighten them and open each photo for us in its own separate document, all in a matter of seconds!<\/p>\n<style type=\"text\/css\">\n.adslot-pr2 { display: inline-block; width:300px; float:right; margin: 6px 0px 12px 20px; }\n@media (max-width: 767px) { .adslot-pr2 { display: none; } }\n<\/style><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\n<!-- 300x250 photo editing top responsive -->\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle adslot-pr2\"     \n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6601556224092982\"\n     data-ad-slot=\"4356542292\"\n     data-ad-format=\"rectangle\"><\/ins>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script>\n<p>Here's how it works. First, place as many photos as you'd like (or at least, as many as you can fit) onto your  scanner, making sure to leave some empty space around each one so they don't overlap. Photoshop isn't capable of actually scanning images, so you'll need to use either the software your scanner came with or a third party  program like VueScan or SilverFast to scan the photos. Save your file in the TIFF format for best image quality, then open it in Photoshop. <\/p>\n<aside><p class=\"members-ad-top\"><a href=\"\/print-ready-pdfs\/\">Download all of our Photoshop tutorials as PDFs!<\/a><\/p><\/aside>\n<p>Here's my file after scanning four images at once. Notice that I put no effort at all into making sure the images were positioned properly on the scanner (they're all crooked). The only thing I made sure of was that none of the photos were overlapping each other, otherwise Photoshop would  run into problems when trying to separate them:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/crop-straighten\/four-photos-scanned.jpg\" alt=\"Four old photos scanned at once. Image &copy; 2010 Photoshop Essentials.com.\" width=\"449\" height=\"500\" style=\"margin-bottom:6px;\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Make sure you leave space between each photo when scanning so they don't overlap.<\/div>\n<p>At this point, all four photos are part of a single larger image, but what I need is for them to be separated into their own individual documents. I <em>could<\/em> separate them manually by drawing selections  around each image, copying each one to its own layer and creating new documents from the individual layers, but then I'd still need to crop and straighten each one myself and I'm already getting bored just thinking about it. A better way is to let Photoshop automatically do all that work for me!<\/p>\n<p>To do that, go up to the <strong>File<\/strong> menu in the Menu Bar along the top of the screen, choose <strong>Automate<\/strong>, and then choose <strong>Crop and Straighten Photos<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/crop-straighten\/crop-straighten-command.gif\" alt=\"Selecting the Crop and Straighten Photos command in Photoshop. Image &copy; 2010 Photoshop Essentials.com.\" width=\"526\" height=\"241\" \/>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">Go to File &gt; Automate &gt; Crop and Straighten Photos.<\/div>\n<p>That's all there is to it, and within  seconds, Photoshop examines the file, makes a copy of each of the photos, opens each one in its own document window, and does its best job to crop and straighten each image, all with no effort from us:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/crop-straighten\/photoshop-crop-straighten.jpg\" alt=\"All four photos have been cropped, straightened and opened in separate document windows. Image &copy; 2010 Photoshop Essentials.com.\" width=\"501\" height=\"550\" style=\"margin-bottom:6px;\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">All four photos have been cropped, straightened and opened in separate document windows.<\/div>\n<p>For a command that runs entirely on auto-pilot, Photoshop did a remarkable job of separating each image from the original scan. Did it do an equally good job at cropping and straightening them? For the most part, yes, although if we look at this image, we see that it's still a little crooked:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/crop-straighten\/crooked-image.jpg\" alt=\"One of the photos is still crooked. Image &copy; 2010 Photoshop Essentials.com.\" width=\"415\" height=\"450\" style=\"margin-bottom:6px;\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"image-desc\">The Crop and Straighten Photos command doesn't always get things exactly right.<\/div>\n<p>As powerful and impressive as it is, the Crop and Straighten Photos command still leaves an occasional minor problem like this behind. To correct it, simply crop and straighten the photo manually with Photoshop's <strong>Crop Tool<\/strong>. First, select the Crop Tool from the Tools panel:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/photo-editing\/crop-straighten\/photoshop-crop-tool.gif\" alt=\"The Crop Tool in Photoshop.
