Looking For The History States Option In Photoshop CS3? Adobe Moved It!

If you're a big fan of Photoshop's Undo steps but routinely find that Photoshop doesn't give you enough of them, simply add more! Of course, you could always try to find a more efficient way of working on your images so you're not always relying on the Undo steps, but if you want more Undo steps, just add more History States!

If you've upgraded to Photoshop CS3 from an earlier version of Photoshop and you already knew where the History States option was, you'll find that it's no longer in the same place in Photoshop CS3. It's still found in the Preferences dialog box, but as of Photoshop CS3, Adobe has added a new section to the Preferences called Performance, and they've moved the History States option into the new Performance section. Go up to the Edit (Win) / Photoshop (Mac) menu at the top of the screen, choose Preferences , and then choose Performance . Over on the far right of the Preferences dialog box, you'll see the History States option. Simply change the value in the input box to add more History States. Here, I've increased mine to 30:

Click OK when you're done to exit out of the dialog box. Keep in mind that the more History States you add, the more memory you'll need on your computer. If you find that Photoshop is becoming sluggish as you work on your images, either reduce the number of History States or add more memory to your computer.
